Pelle Soeborg's new book
Posted by zgardner18 on Tuesday, September 19, 2006 10:24 AM

I came home from work yesterday and low and behold there it was sitting on my entertainment center.  All I can say is that Pelle has built one heck of a layout.  Not only is his work beautiful but so is his photography.  If you liked all of his MR articles then you will really like his book.  It also introduces his Donner River, a mix of Donner Pass and Feather River, as well as the layout's concrete plant.  If you haven't ordered your copy, I suggest you do so.

I just saw this book today, and it has truly great photography.  I'm not one to gush, but wow, this is one heckuva layout as far as it's scenery goes.  Just awesome stuff to see.  You know it's good when the plastic people are the only quick way to see if the photo is real or not.  Totally inspiring art.

However, as much as I drool over his work, I wish he'd also turn his considerable talents to the Operations of his layout...which mostly consists of a staging yard and a loop of track.  Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I'd like to see what he could do with a bigger layout.

I just received my ten copies of Pelle's book from Kalmbach ( for gifts ).  Although the photos may be similar Pelle has told me he reshot all the photos for the book.  Regardless the book is amazingly done and Kalmbach did a good job keeping it true to Pelle's original intent.  Thanks to Pelle and Kalmbach for making this exciting new book.

10 copies?  You actually know that many guys that are interested in Model railroading and paid for them for these people?  I think maybe you were just over supporting Peles book by purchasing that many.  If I was going to give some to people I would just color photo copy the pages for my friends not purchase 10 copies at $20 a piece.  I would not sell the copies but I would not buy 10 books for friends of mine.

Goldmine,

I have to ask: What's with the negative tone in your posts? Almost every one of your posts is either knocking someone's ideas or criticizing someone for doing something nice for another person. With your attitude, I'd be amazed if you had 10 friends to receive your copies. If you think your posts are going to win you friends or favors here on this forum; you're wrong. If you show respect for other people in your communication with them here, you'll earn respect from other members instead of being thought of as a fool.

Just my honest opinion,

Don Z.

Don, you don't have to explain your generosity to anyone. For all we know, you may be a member of a club, and these make GREAT gifts.
I applaud your generosity.

As for making photo copies of pages, this is stealing pure and simple. Someone worked to make that book, and to do as Goldmine suggests is flat wrong...end of story!!

Goldmine,

Several things come to mind.  One, what you have suggested is called a violation of copyright.  Whether you sell the copied material or not, you are infringing on the profits of another person's work.  That's known as breaking the law.  You might find that the folks at MR and Kalmbach (the suppliers of this FREE forum that you have the privilege of using at the moment) may have something to say about that.

Two, in your haste to "save money", you'd probably end up spending over $100 anyhow just to make the color copies and they still wouldn't look as nice (or mean as much) as if you had spent the extra $$$ to buy the books in the first place.  (Your so-called 10 "friends" might even come to the conclusion that you were a cheapskate for doing so.)

Lastly, I agree with Don Z's comments.  The continuous negative comments you've been posting here will get real old - real fast.

Spont,

Nice (and generous) gifts.  I'm sure your friends will enjoy them...Smile [:)]

For gifts?   I always knew I needed better friends.  This clinches it.

I just got the november 2006 MR with Pelle's article about the Donner river side of his layout. If the book mentions how to make that I definitely want that book.

greetings,

Marc Immeker

Marc,

Pelle does talk a lot about the Donner side of his layout.  Though a very small area, it is full of amazing detail that brings it to life.  Definately worth it.

Can any one here tell me if the book has more detailed track plans than in Nov.mr mag? i like this plan and may be able to turn it upside down and turn it backwards and be able to have the space. i liked this plan in march 2005 also. but didn't know how to turn the plan. i guess it would be hold up in a mirror and turn it upside down.  thanks to any help

Paul,

We've disagreed about stuff in the past, but on this topic I'll agree with you 200 percent! Pelle is one heck of modeler!!

Received my copy yesterday, amazing, Pelle is truely one of the best modelers. The book does explain how he made certain portions of his layout, and also has a section on weathering rail cars. excellent book!!!

It says it has 180 colored photos taken by Pelle, so you know it has a lot of pages.  There are some "How To" parts but not much.  The book was mainly to show is layout and his photography.  In the back it shows a drawing of his track plan in color.
