Manufacturer Loco Wish List
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, June 11, 2006 12:23 PM
I know everyone is tired of polls, so here is something a little different. Pick a favorite prototype loco that is NOT in production by any manufacturer or only available in brass that you would like to see produced in plastic or die-cast. You can even pick which manufacturer you would like to produce it.

Maybe if we are lucky, some manufacturers will see the thread and take our suggestions under consideration. I am even willing to take the results and write open letters to the different manufacturers. It's about time WE told the manufacturers what WE want rather than the other way around.

I'll start. I'd like to see a New York Central Class F-12 4-4-0 steam engine produced by Broadway Limited.

What's your wish?

How about a "factory painted" Alco RS3 in Southern Railway green paint scheme? Athearn is running the black ones, but none of those for me. Second choice would be high nose GP30 in Southern. I'll take either an Atlas, Athearn RTR, Stewart, Intermountain, Kato, or P2K.

Denver & Salt Lake 2-8-2 - Sunset did one run in brass in the late 1970s. But every standard gauge Grande modeler needs one.

Northern Pacific Z8 4-6-6-4, and the great A3, A4 and A5 4-8-4.

DM&IR M3 and M4 2-8-8-4

B&O EM1 2-8-8-4

The EM1 and M4 drive systems are very close since they were built by Baldwin.

How about a PRR H9 2-8-0 from P2K? Also I'm waiting for Atlas to offer an Erie GP-7 with sound and DCC.

Western Maryland 4-8-4 of the Potomac Class. It is availible in brass but I would pick BLI to make it. The WM Historical Society in Union Bridge Md might have the diagrams for this engine.

Baltimore and Ohio's early Boxcabs. I probably will pick Atlas or Broadway to do it.

An HO scale UP U50B with all wheel drive that can take an 18" radius, but costs less than $200, by anyone who can make a good inexpensive engine. Or maybe as a Hobbytown kit. Hobbytown is still in business, and they have a perfect drive for it, so they might be able to do it.[:D]

We've done this thread many times and they always demonstrate the same problem. With all the posts so far, I only see a few locomotives that have been mentioned twice (not counting the sympathy listing of an FL-9 by BigRusty). For a manufacturer to take note there needs to be a single locomotive that recurs much more frequently than this.

However I do see Precision Craft making a non-brass GN S2. This could be a sign that some less common stuff will be considered by the manufacturers.

That was one of the first ones Atlas did with the Kato drive in 1984.

As I recall Atlas made one in N-scale at one time (1969?). They ended up collecting dust and on clearance tables at the local hobby stores.

What do you classify as super-detailed? I saw one from the last run done by Rivarossi and from 3 feet away I thought it was a brass model.

Is that the one they called the Empire State? IHC makes ones that seems like with a bit of detailing and it could be a really nice model.

That could work, but it would look just as silly as an Athearn DD40X does on 18" curves. That is just too big of a locomotive for that size of track.

I'd love to see any of the T-1, T-2, or T-3 steam engine series in N-Scale - I want to model late era LVRR Steam.....

But i'd settle for a N Scale Reading T-1!

How about HOj versions of the plastic N-scale JNR C50 class 2-6-0's imported by Kato many years ago? The only problems, for US prototype modelers, are the 6-wheel rigid frame tenders and the internally secured smokebox doors (wheel and locking lever in the middle, no dogs around the edges.)

Oh, well. Guess I'll have to settle for re-motoring my 40 year old brass C50.

I'm not familiar with the Empire State, except for maybe NYC 999, which was the first steam engine to break 100 MPH.

And that's not necessarily the one I'm talking about, but would do in a pinch. What I'm talking about are large, generally medium-drivered 4-4-0s that were built between 1895 and 1920, and used well intot he late 1940s. What I'd really like to see is a C&IM 500 series engine, but I'll take a modernized IC, NYC, or southern shortline engine in a pinch. The Ma & Pa engine they're about to release looks nothing like these more common Americans.

As for the IHC 4-4-0, that's probably the engine I'll be using for at least two kitbashes. But the cab and valve gear are all wrong for most engines I want to model, which usually had Walschaerts valve gear. I've got the time to do a lot of things to steam models, but scratchbuilding valve gear isn't one of them!
