Been modeling long?

I've benn modeling since I was five yrs. old, when my father put in a double decker layout in the garage with Lionel on one level and Marklin on the the other. WE kept that layout going until I was 15 yrs. old, and sold it when we moved. I started an HO layout soon after and have been modeling that scale ever since. I have built and then given away 6 layouts and I am working on my 7th, a lumber and mining operation with lots of Shays, Climaxes and Heislers. This one is the one I'm planning to keep as I built a special outbuilding just to house it. Track is laid and the mountains are starting to rsie right now. My nieces and nephews are getting excited because they know they'll be soon running trains again with Uncle Scott.

I've been at it since 1978 this time around ,but I had 027(MARX first then Lionel),S gauge ,and HO in that order (not all at once) while growing up.

I now model in N scale and 0n30 (not 0n 2 1/2) as this mag keeps calling it.I still dabble in HO from time to time also.

I was 15 and have been modelrailroading since, which the exception of 6 years of collge and 4 years in the Air Force. I have had three layouts and am now planning a modest layout that I can detail to current standards (mine and the general hobby). My nine year old daughter and I also model in O-21/2.

My first train set was American Flyer wind up at 5 yrs.I became interested in model railroading N scaleabout 2 1/2 years ago.I built a small 3x6 layout, dismantled it started a larger 4x8 layout. I've aquired lots of engines,rolling stock,structures and track.Buying lots of goodies now,planning ahead for retirement in about 4 years. Problem I have is lack of time,my job takes me away from home all week.My primary interest is Maine railroads.

Started with American Flyer in '51. Went to HO in '56. Moved to Europe and began modeling western European prototype. Bought a PFM brass Daylight GS-4 in '60 shortly before tearing down layout to move. Haven't had a layout since but have continued buying SP, UP, & ATSF equipment with a break between about '75 and '95. If I were starting now and were younger, I would go with N scale because of space. I could squeeze an N scale layout in 20x20 and still run large western steam power and long trains. I feel that N would become too small within the next 5 years or so with the probability of macular degeneration and the future need for reading glasses.

i started december 25 1961 with HO , to 1984.
and new start in april 1994 with Oe (O on 16,5 mm track)
and also real steam locomotives , 60cm gauge from 1972 to 1975, and
1 meter gauge since 1996

Due to the lack of success with my brother, my parents would not allow me to have a train set as a child. That just made me want one even more (forbidden fruit!) I finally had one at age 11 (HO) Enjoyed it for a few years then left the hobby as a teen.

Got back into model railroading at age 30. Boy did I have a lot to catch up on! There's a big difference between brass track and train set locomotives making jack-rabbit starts and a proper model railroad with good trackwork and smooth-running locos. I've been at it for almost 9 years now with little sign of letting up.

I got my first Hornby tinplate when I was 7, but that was swapped for a slot racing set later on (things you live to regret!). It was followed when I was 8 by a Hornby Dublo 3-rail set - I still have the engine, Bristol Castle. Apart from a brief period at university I have always had some model locos around, but almost always 4mm or 3.5 mm apart from a very brief fling with N gauge. Current layout is HOm, Swiss Rhaetisch Bahn set in 1999. Large collection of British, Canadian and some US locos though - I wish we had basements in the UK!
