BB = Blue Box - the Athearn locos in semi-kit form (where you have to fit the handrails, horns, etc) are usually known as BB due to the blue boxes the kits come in.

The original AThearn locomotive line was sold in blue boxes, hence Athearn BB. Newer RTR mosels come in a more colorful box and the Genesisline comes in a blue/yellow box.
