Which "monster" locomotive would you most like to buy? Share your opinion below.

This is an attempt to train "Trains" staff. The largest country in your subscriptions other than the States is Canada. So when you post polls wanting to know what passenger trains you want, make sure you have Canadian content (The Canadian would be the obvious inclusion). Remember the forum although American in location is international in flavour.

So in the interest of training, did Canada have articulates?

And would you include the "Selkirk" as a mononster engine?

I would change my vote to Jawn Henry from GG1. I already have my N scale monster loco, the Kato SD70 A/A is about as big as I can stand on 11' curves. I skipped the SD80/SD90 cause it is too long.

Mainly, I just want F7A/B sets in SP Black Widow paint with both lights and a RS1 or similar for my Los Angeles area line.

Too many times you folks down south forget that in Canada we have 2 huge class 1 railroads - Canadian National and Canadian Pacific. Both railroads use large motive power, and have trackage in the US.

I would like a good qualitiy 4-4-0, and maybe a 4-8-4, and those would be the LAST steamers I would buy (having the 2-8-0 and 2-8-2 already in my road name, which is NOT given above!).

Is the steamer market approaching saturation ????

I guess it would be none of the above. I don't see a C & O 2-6-6-6 Allegeheny listed anywhere. In N-Scale that is. Steam power is what I want. GOOD running steam power at that! It can be done .

Another great one that I wish some one would make in plastic rather than brass, is UPs TURBINE NUM 1 AND 2, these were steamlined steam turbines and really interesting.

I'm not modeling any of those railroads nor do I have any particular reason to flop out a big locomotive just for the heck of it. If size is the criteria for this poll, I wonder why the Big Boy didn't make the list and the fairly small GG1 did?

A Pennsy T1 in N scale would be nice, I voted for the GG! cuz the one I have is too light to pull more than 3 cars and is not very DCC friendly.....Ed

Really none of the locos on your poll...... You should include a blank on all your polls for write-in's. I agree with others that the Canadian, fans are too often left out.
USRA locos in CN & CP paint schemes????!!! give me break! The few that were on GT and GTW and did make it north were few and far between. How about a CN Mountain or Northern; or one of the zillion CP D-4's/ D-10's . Not even one simple shake the box plastic van (or better in plastic). Even the all-weather loco cab conversion kits are getting hard to find....
The manufacturers that sometimes do put out half-way good models have gotten my money.

Actually, if I was to buy a "Monster" loco, it would be a cab forward to pull all my reefers.
And I would only run it on a club layout with big curve radii-my home minrad is 25".

In the Monster class, I already run one UP SD90MAC (I would like a couple more !) and a DD40 is in the paint shop. I am not a steam fan but I consideer the yet-to-come Genesis Challenger as aMuseum feauture or an Excursion train puller.

The big engines are nice to look at and great to watch as they run, but how many have layouts big enough to properly justify having the big monster engines? I would rather see the manufacturers produce good quality (Broadway Limited type) smaller engines such as 2-6-2, 2-6-0, 2-8-0 with sound, DCC, etc. Makes more sense to have small, good quality steam engines for the majority of the layouts which don't have room for the monsters.

The GG-1 was probably selected because it was birthed during the era of steam and was still in service when steam was all but gone. [:D] I'd vote for Pennsy's T1 even though only 2 or 3 were built at the end of the steam era.

Bachmann Spectrum has the most accurate DD40AX HO scale in plastic. Athearn's model is closer to a DD35A. all it needs is 2 small cooling fans to replace 2 of the large ones[:D]

Definiately Challenger. been up close with Union Pacific #3985 and was simply in total awe of the locomotive. Have also been close to Centennial #6936 also was impressed with it too. Will possibly be purchasing one of each of them when possible in the future when layout gets made.

Why buy anything with a UP logo? I say boycott UP models until UP backs off on their ridiculous licensing demands! That might apply to the fallen flags as well.

I voted for the GG1 of which I have two in N scale, but I go ape when I see a J1. The Jays may be too big for my layout, but should be at home on my NTrak club's layout which has better curves.
An M1 may not be as much of a monster, but I woudn't mind one of them too.

Sorry guys, none of the above also. I am a B&O fan. As you probably would guess, either EL3 - 5 or EM1 would be the locos of choice. One could also make a case for S1a's. (for those not of the "domer" persuasion, 2-8-8-0, 2-8-8-4, and 2-10-2)

while I chose the GG1, I also like the J1 and, maybe Ql, which were big, powerful earthshakers. Then there's also the lone HC1 which littered Horseshoe Curve with broken couplers and car parts because the trains it handled were more than the cars could take. Pennsy Power was real!

What about the Matt H. Shay, Triplexes ( P-1 2-8-8-8-2 ) [:0][:0] from the Erie RR. Three were built (#s 5014-5016). Yeah these locomotives were very impracticle[:(], but they were built and they were used in service; all be it limited.

I have no reason to buy a model that doesn't fit my intended railroad. Now, if I were a collector and just wanted to stick it on a shelf -- then I'd probably choose an N&W class A or a C&O 2-6-6-6.

For me, my dream: a Z scale SP Cab-Forward, for my Z scale Tehachapi Pass layout (in spite of the fact my favorite era is spring 1997, just after both SP/UP and ATSF/BN mergers).

For me, my dream: a Z scale SP Cab-Forward, for my Z scale Tehachapi Pass layout (in spite of the fact my favorite era is spring 1997, just after both SP/UP and ATSF/BN mergers).

There are several of those locos on that list that I like, I model in N scale and we don't have a quality DD40X available yet and that engine came out in 1969!. I would really like the Super Turbine in N scale,but at $850.00 plus for brass, it is very expensive. I did buy 1, but I would like to have 2 or 3. Things i might be interested in, woud also have to include the C855, and the 8500-class turbines. One mor ething: has anyone ever come across an HO scale version of the CNW 4-8-4 Northerns? Or, will I have to modify something else in order to have one of those?

Definitly the Erie's Triplexes P-1 2-8-8-8-2 (5014-5016), name the "MATT H. SHAY" was the behemith of the bunch, in my opinion. It was only mildy successful because the boiler was so huge and improper cylinder dimensions for compounding; it lacked adequate reserves of fuel (coal & water) to make it a contender. However it was used by the Erie RR in the Helper service. Built in 1914 - to - 1916; there were four built.

OH, joseph2 the N&W, who were the owners of the EL. As far as I know, were never considered purchasing more huge steam. They saw the dimming light in favor of the practicle use of diesels. It would he been nice to see the Trilex resurected, but it would have required a major design overhaul and the RR's then didn't have the capital for such an unprofitable venture. The very though of seeing a steam locomotive on the EL makes my stomach go into spasms.

Put me in the 'none of the above' column. I have a 'smallish' HO layout with 24 inch radius curves modeling the preWWI era. All this 'monster'' motive power isn't appropriate for me. I would like to see a nice Atlantic (4-4-2) with a Harriman tender.

Southern Pacific AC-7 through 12. Their uniqueness is impressive.

DM&IR's M-4 is also nice. It reminds me of a cross between the Allegheny and BigBoy.

What about Pennsy's "Big Liz"? Like the HC1 she pulled the couplers right out of her test train, a bit too powerful for early 1900s draft gear, but she proved it was possible to build mainline power for an electric railroad. She was a steeple cab loco, side rod driven. Definately scary looking.
Another popular Pennsy (and Southern) loco is the Baldwin Centipede. The LHS has one in O or S scale behind the counter. Won't run on my HO gauge tracks, though![:D]
