I think it's fair to say Lionel has a place in all of our hearts. But if they keep up at this rate, they wont have a place in our pocket books.

I love this hobby, but come on![:(!]
If i did not buy almost everything used, there is NO WAY I would still be able to enjoy this hobby! I find my self buying the stuff no one else wants (Expecialy Lionel) because its all I can afford. As soon as I saw Lionel HO I knew this was an overpriced train set. I can still find the older stuff at an fair price in O & ho scales. I've seen there "NEW" O stuff.....OMG! $2,000 for an train set, hey I can buy an real caboose for $7,000, or an MOW car for less then $2,000 [B)]

I know what I want and can afford, and that is where my hard earned dollars will go. To others who are willing to sell me there Lionel. Athearn, or what ever nameband X at the best price[:)]

I agree with all of you points I am 14 years old modelrailroading since i was 3 and have my own 4x8 layout I never ask my parents for money to pay for supplies and what not but when i see companies producing models for $100+ i know they are detailed but how can i afford that im better off doing it myself or not at all The model railroad industry is running the worlds greatest hobby campaign and i love that you are trying to get young people like my self involved but at these prices some of the modelrail roaders with lots of money cant afford it!!! the industry needs to wake up i am haveing a very tough time trying to finance my own layout and with these hard economic times i dont know how anyone can devote alot of funds to the hobby!!

The pricing is absurd. Why not produce yet another NYC Hudson, or perhaps yet another F-7. How about a pricey USRA Pacific or MIke? Come one folks, most of us will be on pensions in the not -too-distant future and everyone can surely use a break in the recent trend of escalating prices.

I had a set of their FA's I painted and detailed for FRISCO. They were great engines and I letrally ran the wheels off of them. Welcome back to HO Lionel!

I have some Lionel from about 1975 ... my ex-wife gave me a Geep painted in Southern green and gold for Christmas. It lasted longer than the marriage!

I talked to Life Like once about tooling cost on the average diesel, and they indicated that the average cost was around 100,000-200,000 bucks. A lot of money and a lot to invest unless you can recoup and then make a profit. This where ConCor screwed up. They were going to produce the ELECTROLINER, a really fantastic train that even I as an NYC fan would have bought as a collectors Item. I've always liked it and was hoping it would be a lot less than what they wanted. They couldn't recoup more than 60% of the tooling cost so we don't have the train and probably never will.[:(][:(][:(][V][V]

I have a Lionel SP Daylight - runs perfectly and cost all of $19 (from Hobbie for Men- remember them?). Guess I'll stick with it and save $700!

Take it from someone who knows you get more bang for your buck in O scale. Thats why I have all my steamers in that scale.

I agree that Lionel is making some mistakes with their venture into HO again. I think a better plan would be for them to produce a complete line of items (locomotives, rolling stock, sets, etc.) for the average hobbyist, not really cheap items like low-end Bachmann, Life-Like, etc., but rather items that could do good competing against Athern, etc. They would probably do quite well considering that the Lionel name itself would probably attract a lot of people to buy it. Then, after they're already established in the market, they could venture out more with higher-end items (when I say higher end, I don't quite mean a $700 steamer). Another good idea would be to re-release some of their postwar HO items, such as they have done with their O gauge line. A lot of these items (particularily the operating action cars) would be quite popular considering that many of the originals are collectors' items today and gaining more attention. When I first read the headline that Lionel returned to HO I was excited and ready to head over to the hobby shop as soon as they came in to make a purchase. But I was quite disappointed when I read the full story. They know a lot of people will be wanting to get new Lionel HO and are trying to take advantage of that by jumping right in with an extremely expensive item. I suppose it may be slightly more successfull than simmilar items because of being made by Lionel, but that doesn't mean they're going to sell like hotcakes! What's really sad is that you can buy good quality O gauge items from Lionel for that same price, which if I could afford to spend that kind of money on a train all at one, I'd much rather do!
