Whats your favorite railroad?

Santa Fe (steam era) and the early luxury passenger trains are what I've latched onto and often wondered what the origins of the Santa Fe were. Any pointers would be appreciated.

I checked off Rio Grande, but its really Denver & Rio Grande Western, Colorado Southern, oh heck, its ANY Colorado narrow guage line, Oh what the hey, make that ANY narrow guage line ANYWHERE.

For me it will have to be the "old friendly" Southern Pacific. I love to model the old Black Widow scheme. When I was a kid and saw my first freight climbing Donner summit with 6 SD-9's on the point, 4 SD's in the middle and 2 at the rear shoving at 7000ft. while crawling on a narrow ledge, I was hooked. [:D][8D]

As the handle indicates, I am a fan of the Chicago and Alton, which disappeared well before I was born.

Of the railroads that I grew up with, I would have to say:

1. Chicago & North Western (Go... North Western!)


2. The Milwaukee Road (First real trains I ever saw-probably caught "the bug" from them.)


3. Soo Line (I still remember the white and red diesels pulling long, fast trains with all those cars from Canadian lines.)


4. Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) (I liked the original RTA paint scheme on the F45PH engines I would see while waiting for the bus to take me to school. And to hear those five-chime airhorns.)



I generally have a warm spot in my heart for Midwestern lines.

It is the great fallen flag...TH&B for me...Toronto, Hamilton and Buffalo.. great memories from my youth, and finally there are units available in Canada in this paint scheme... Thanks .....Milkman

I don't know about all the changes / amalgamations of rail lines etc, so forgive my noviceness. Working with Young Offenders during the day, I thought that the best rolling stock to get would be "CONRAIL" cattle cars. (however an earlier post indicates that Conrail is no more) ... that noted, I'm a British Columbia boy - CPR, CNR, BCR, Rocky Mountaineer Rail Tours, Kettle Valley Rail, and of course our very own "Shuswap and Monashee Railroad".
