Born and raised in Chicago near the Belt Railways Clearing Yard, seems to have an impact on what I model also. Growing up seeing SOO, CP, CN, BR everyday, now live in the north-burbs near the Wisconsin border.

Sacramento Valley of California. Midway between San Francisco and the Sierra Nevada mountains. Seven miles west of one of the largest railroad yards west of the Mississippi. Ten miles east of one of the greatest railroad museums in the country. Five miles either way from two big, terrific hobby shops that specialize ONLY in trains.
Oh yah, it's on a tiny little hill so that I don't have to worry about my Garage Empire flooding this year from our frequent Pineapple Expresses. And housing prices in this part of California haven't hit the Sixth Stage of Astronomical. At least not yet.

Doesn't it amaze you at how misinformed people from other states can sometimes be...

I recently talked to someone from California that's never been to Texas that asked me if we still had cowboys, indians, oil wells, long horn cattle and rattle snakes everywhere. It was really hard not to laugh. Even the Texas accent is becoming extinct...

André Chapelon? Congratulations, I believe a pseudo made with the name of a french engineer is quite rare in Northern America!

I admire Chapelon's work. The man could get the utmost out of a steam locomotive.

It's really kind of hard to support your local hobby shop when the nearest hobby shop that's worth the name is a 150 mile roundtrip.

Initially I'd caught myself thinking that MR people live in little, properly scaled houses and work in scaled industries that are often devoid of interior details. [%-)]

Thinking more clearly now and still residing in SE South Dakota, a drive across the bridge from Nebraska.

QUOTE: does no one in Delaware enjoy the hobby?

Delaware is here
I am in Delaware and we are many in number for such a small state ( we are next to the smallest and only have 3 counties). There are 3 Model railroad clubs that I know of. There are around 30 of us in lower Delaware that I know of. Which would be about 3/4 of the state milage wise which is only 1,954 square miles. Some people probably live in counties that big. The Northern part of the state which is the most populated, I would be afraid to offer a guess but probably 70 or so modelers that I know of. We have a great open house schedual in November which I feel is a good promotion for the hobby. There is a modeler 2 doors down from me. nad 5 with in 5 miles of me.

One reason a lot of the members on the forum don't post their exact locations is because there have been a number of cases over the years where people have insulted oneanother in chat rooms and forums with deadly results. Not everyone takes things lightly, especially someone with serious mental problems...
The world we live in today has become a very dangerous place, and people have to take every precaution in order to maintain their safety - at least that's my reason. If south Texas isn't good enough I'm sorry, but that's as close as it'll ever get.

Northwest DC - fifteen minutes from Union Station and the only preserved Ps-4, #1401. Housing's not as expensive as San Fran, but rising fast - got a nice old rowhouse a few years back, which takes a lot of work but has materially aided my model railroading. Home repair has lots of transferrable skills. And you can wire the basement circuits to suit your model railroading needs.

There are a lot of model railroaders here - quite a few clubs, the B&O Museum in Baltimore, and plenty of good sites to watch trains, particularly in Maryland.

Welcome to the forums tony2000 or at least to your first post. I reside in albany ga. No basements as they turn into swimming pools. We have no hobby shop but we do have a club, Flint River Model Railroad Club. There are more modelers in town than club members. We do sponser a show in Jan every year, next week in fact, which draws a good group. The town is serviced by NS and a short line. It was ga/fla railnet but I know they just sold out. Phil

I live in Minehad, Somerset,England.
At present I am armchair modelling exclusively. HO. Espee in the 50s. I have a loft space which I am considering converting into a layout area. But first I have to clear out all the extraneous N/HO/ collection and a whole mess of books and magazines. I feel an Ebay coming on. Minehead is home to the West Somerset Railway. The longest preserved line in England.Steam and all..
