Turnout question
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, June 17, 2003 7:33 AM
I am in the process of making a change to my small switching layout (so what else is new). All of my track and turnouts are the older Atlas code 100 brass
I would like to add another turnout but cannot use a full size one. I was thinking of shortening one but it still doesn't fit the required space. Does anyone know if anyone makes a short turnout (if that is the correct terminology)? If so I would prefer it to be brass and not nickle silver as it would not blend in with the rest of the track unless it can be painted in order to blend in.
Thanks for any help. Bob

Peco makes a nice assortment but I think all in nickle silver. Their catalog is a useful one.

Have you thought about using a wye turnout?

The smallest code 100 brass rail turnout I know is the Atlas snaptrack turnout, which I seem to recall is something like a 3 1/2. But take care as there is some internal wiring in a snaptrack turnout and if you cut off the rails too close to the frog to make the thing smaller, you run the risk of cutting one of those wires. And the plastic frog is something of a nuisance if you have small steam locomotives.
I do not know if Atlas still offers this in brass or not but I see them all the time at swap meets. heck I just threw out five of them a year ago figuring nobody would want them anymore.
it might be possible to use some sort of chemical blackener on rail so that the nickel silver would not stand out but frankly -- why not use this opportunity to start replacing the brass rail over time?
