Made the return round trip, St. Louis-UofI today.....on the way up US 45 a northbound was in the siding at Neoga, Illinois...motive power was IC SD70 1004 / CN Dash9-44CW 2712 / IC SD70 1028 / IC SD40-2 6255 (in CN paint) / IC SD70 1030.

Thats a lot of IC power. Sounds good dingoix. Im not getting any BB or Athearn RTR engines. The only reason I will get any SD70's is to rebuild them into new units or put new trucks, wheels, and motors in them and also weigh them down.

got the april MR today and on the "new products" page there's the BLI IC SD40-2 w/ sound.
HUGE LAYOUT UPDATE when I add on I'm going to tear up the old yard and build a new 9 track yard which is modeled after Chicago Great Western's Oelwein, IA yard. I'm also going to have a roundhouse. The story is- IC bought CGW and got their huge yard and their engines.
I'm going to run CGW FP7's and other F units and GP7's / 9's and SD40's. (which I will have to paint and decal). And Kato has a RS-2 decorated for CGW.
Don't worry I still like IC. This 9-track yard is going to be SO cool.

Here's the trackplan http://www.cgwrr.com/Oelwein.htm you can see in blue the 9 yard tracks and a 6 stall roundhouse. My yard will be pretty much like that and it'll take up a good portion of my layout.

Thats a good plan. I have GMR 2003 and the plan is on page 75. It is in N scale so you will have to modify it just a little but overall it is a good plan.

Yeah, i know it's N scale. My yard might not be quite as long as the prototpe but it willl still be HUGE. It will be nice to have a layout that actually represents a real location.

I'm going to get an old Atlas FP7 at my LHS and paint and decal it for CGW sometime soon.

I should note the only part of that plan I'm going to have is Oelwein.

No MR yet? That's too bad. It's a pretty good one. I was drooling over the BLI IC SD40-2.

this is a nice topic,i model only ic,use to fire on the ic out of markham yards in the early 50's 4-8-2's were my favorite. my layout has 450 ft. mainline with e6's, sw7's,gp7's and 9's also 4-8-2's.i'm in outstate minnesota and operate alone,don't have dcc but have fun with dc.it's nice to read all the comments on the site,good luck to all and go IC.

--LAYOUT UPDATE-- I might model CGW (C&NW if it's after '68) 1968-1975 w/ an IC interchange (it would be odd to see an IC SD70 drop off a train and a CGW F3 pick it up). The reason I'm so interested in CGW and C&NW is that was the RR of my hometown (but EVERYTHING has been abandoned) I will tell you more about that later.
I like IC better, but sometimes you need to model your hometown RR.

I've got a 11"x36" pad of cork, 2 turnouts and some flextrack on the way so I willl start on my yard when I get it. CGW decals are on their way too.

Layout is operational again (it was down last night) I've got about 2 feet of double track. I had to tear up most of the yard to get enough flextrack to rebuild a curve.

Before I add on I'm going to raise my layout up to about 50".

Only when they excede the number of freight cars you have.

I could run IC GP40s in 1968, they couldn't be in the DEATH STAR paint but I'm going to use "modelers license" and run my GP40s since they DID exist in 68 but not in that paint.

I was thinking the other day and I think the GP40 is the only one to wear all 3 IC paint schemes- Green-Diamond, Split-Rail, DEATH STAR.

I need some B-B IC GP35s and P2K GP7s and / or 9s.

I found out Stewart used to / still does make a CGW F3. I've seen them on eBay. Wish I had the $$. I've heard Stewarts are about the best F units you can buy.

Got my track.

Got my decals. I'm going to order some paint, gloss and dulcote Monday.

I've been E-mailing a CGW *expert* (more so than me) and he thinks the Oelwein yard had 32 tracks[:O] My next layout WILL be an EXACT replica of the Oelwein yard (even if it is 32 tracks) so I'm hoping to find an Oelwein trackplan while I still can.

I received my Broadway Limited Illinois Central SD40-2 last week and it is one very sweet running engine. First Hobby in Decatur, Illinois, was the only shop I could find that had the ICs in stock. I checked off the first road number that was listed on their web site, but then received an e-mail informing me that the BLI listing was in error and the road number was different, and asking if I still wanted the locomotive with a different road number; otherwise, they would not send it.

I have dealt with First Hobby several times over the years and have always received top-notch service.

The loco can pull a 15-well car with double-stacked containers up a long 2-percent grade without wheel slipping or slowing down --

Also, what were some more common IC passenger trains I can easily model from the 40's and 50's?

The first FREIGHT diesels were GP7s in the early 1950s (i'm pretty sure). I don't know when they got their E units for passenger service.

Atlas GP40 Death Star
B-B GP40-2 that I decaled for IC Death Star
B-B GP38-2 that I painted for IC and I just decaled it this morning as an IC Death Star
Atlas U33C that's painted in the orange & white w/ the split-rail logo.
