Hi - I'm new here. (first post) Let's keep this train talk rolling. I like it. Excessive seriousness is not really neccessary with a hobby, right? The great thing about the internet is that you are free to discuss anything. Trains seems like a good subject for the site. If someone doesn't like it, just keep rolling along and they'll join in or leave. trainboyH16-44, I'm 57 but we share a love of that great FM. Thanks for your enthusiasm, Keith. I spend Christmas in the Montgomery, Ala. area and get to see some great CSX action. My layout is a 6-foot stretch of 83 flextrack on a window sill, for the time being. I have two daughters, one three and one almost two months, so I'm in the planning stages of surrounding my 11X10 office walls with HO railroad; Chicago-i***o rural and back. I live in SP-land, Northern SF Bay Area. Maybe I can post some shots of Richmond's BNSF yard in the future.

Morning Mike, Keith, etc. I've heard it said that raising children is like being pecked to death by chickens, Mike. What do you yhink? Of course I love them completely, though. The gravity of it all.
When I came to S.F. in 1968, I saw SP FP7's, GP-9's, SD-9's, SD-45's, FM switchers and I believe FM Trainmasters that were on the commute line to the S.F. Peninsula. Bloody nose paint scheme, gray with red nose. My nostalgia is pretty active with those days, but I like modern also. I model 50's, and a little 60's. I wi***here were more bloody nose painted, quality plastic locos. I'll be building an FM H12-44 on an Athearn S-12 drive with a Cary body from Bowser. that seems to be the only way to have an FM without the rounded windows like the Atlas models. The SP's didn't have rounded windows. I like the way the FM's look, like a cross between a brick and an elephant in the SP colors. The rounded windows break up the look too much for my taste. I'm rather talkative after coffee.

Yes, welcome streamline10!
My freelance railroad, the Alberta Pacific used exclusively FM diesels until the late 1960s when it bought SD45s, and SW1500s, as well as the new FMs, H30-66, H36-66 and H20-46 (or was it 64?) for branchline service. It is widely cedited for keeping FM in business until the SD40-2 finished it off.

HI streamline

Did you take any pics in that time @68++?? its good your focused on what you want to model becouse with children you/we dont have the luxury of huge amounts of spare time, I try to involve my kids as much as I can but as I model N the little bits arnt ment for small hands so Im thinking of getting a small HO layout (circle or oval with one point to get them to understand the joy of swithing...) put together for them.

What gaugr are you modeling??

Talk later..

I believe I did, but I'll have to ask my ex-wife if she still has any of them. I have a clear memory of an FP7 in bloody nose, sitting at the platform at 3rd and Townsend, that I may have shot. As for Richmond, there's a turntable and a gaggle of engines old and new. I was last there a few years back, so I don't know what's there and how accessible it is, but I'll give it a shot someday. I like going there. Once we were sitting at a cafe in Pt. Richmond nearby and a giant orange C44-9 (I'm pretty sure) pulled up and sat idling next to the patio where our table was. It was waiting for a switching move connected with it's train. Man, those are big! My group was nervous. I'm modeling in HO, its so much easier for the time/money challenged to find supplies and kits, and N would be a little blurrier for me.

Thanks for the welcome, guys. So Matthew, are you a teen that lives near those scenes you shoot? You have a bright future ahead, with that kind of skill and talent. That latest pic is amazing! I'll have to look up the other FM models. Hi Keith.

Let's just say to get there it's a 2 hour drive, but I am pretty close and go there often.
And streamline10. those are imaginary models based on the concept of F-M, with the large business from the APR continuing into the early 1970s in the locomtive business. H30-66 is the equivalent of the U30C and SD40, and the H20-64 is a branchline loco for working the APR's branchlines, kinda like the Milwaukee road's SDL39s (which the APR got some of later on)

Lucky. That is a good photo though. I came pretty close to getting into a war with one of their "judges." I don't know if they're all this way, but some do not wi***o listen to intelligent thoughts and points. They have their viewpoint and that's it. But, no use crying over spilled milk. My photos are getting plenty of hits over at rrpicturearchives.net.

I get it....like the rare EMD F-10 [:)]. I love this hobby! Prototype is not a requirement, but a choice. My main "artistic license" is running 40's and 50's roads as if they were merged at that time; as in SP, C&NW, Rio Grande, like you see nowadays. (UP is dead to me. [xx(])

I just came up with a plan to start my railroad. I'm going to buy some foam and 1X4 & 1X3 and start a rural area that is part of my larger plan. The module will be about 8 feet X I'm not sure yet. Maybe a foot plus a few inches. The future urban area will be a bit wider.

You guys in Mass., I'm an old Springfield boy. Have fun!

Ouch, but it's his fault. Never go around gaes, especially if it's a fast short train! There's just no point!

You have asked the right question. In my world it'd be a bulldog. Childhood and what not.

Heyy...i mean who would really mess with something like a train! theyre fast, powerful, and dangerous if you dont know what your doing. the amount of weight going that fast i mean its many things and scary is one of them. the people that dont understand trains should really do some reasearch because they are something that are not made too be messed with!
