Part of my new layout will feature a busy harbor and I would like to know if anyone knows where I could get a kit for a 1:87 scale merchant ship. I already have tugs from Walthers and even an N scale tug from Koch I'm using as a pilot boat. I could scratch build but I just do not have the time. Can anyone help, Please?

Will a Great Lakes freighter do? Sylvan Scale Models makes a resin kit for one. It looks pretty good, and the manufacturer used to work on them, so the details are right.

Thanks David, I know about that one but have you seen the cost of it? I would rather scratch build than than pay that. I just thought somebody might know of, say a Revel kit or likes, that could be near the scale.

Lindburg Products has two that I would recomend that can be bought at your local hobby shop.
The first is there North Atlantic Fishinf Trawler. I think it's 1/100 scale, but it looks real good around HO stuff. It's about 14" long.
The other is there Shrimp Boat. It's 1/60 scale, but with a new deck, the pilot house moved to the rear, use the kits mast ahead of the pilot house and ad a hatch up front, it makes a real convicing Coastal Freighter. It's a real easy conversion. Model RR Craftman had a graet article on them several years back. I THINK I have the copies if needed. Hope I helped..............Jamie

1/96 SCALE MODEL SHIPS ARE EASIER TO FIND AND IF YOU ALTER THE RAILINGS, WINDOWS, DOORS, AND LIFE RINGS THEY SHOULD WORK OK. PORTHOLES AND WATERTIGHT DOORS ARE SMALL ANYWAY. THIS INFO COMES FROM DAVE FRARY'S BOOK "222 TIPS FOR BUILDING MODEL RAILROAD STRUCTURES". IT CAME IN THE MAIL JUST TODAY.

With only the bow and stern section, it was 5 to 6 hundred bucks. Too much for my harbor. Thanks for trying anyway.

I would like to thank everyone's help. Now a discovery of my own for anyone else looking for ships. I picked up a Revell model of a fireship in 1:87 scale and it gave me exactly what I wanted, the hull and the main deck. This is very easily converted to a two hatch coastal vessel. There is even two lines for painting a waterline in the display model, if you have a Dremel with a cutting disk you can easily make this into a waterline model. Thanks again for everyones help.

Been a couple days since I've been on line, but yess the Fire Boat is a nice kit. I fogot about that one. Give me a few days to go through my magazines and I will get those articles to you............Jamie
