I know I say it alot, but the French "Winnabago" style electrics are the ugliest thing ever on rails. They make those 1830's pufferbillies look like streamlined Hudson's in comparison. I can't find any pics, but all I can say is that the front of the loco and the RV's are nearly identical. And as far as I know, Amtrak even tested one out in the 1970's for use on the NEC!

I'd like to nominate the Whitcomb Center Cab switcher:

Originally built for the U.S. Army, a couple of these served on the Columbus & Greenville RY in Mississippi back in the 60s and 70s.

Personally I kind of like Garrets but i can see your point. I would like to nominate the flameless steamers. Those things tended to look like thorny cucumbers and not having a smoke stack is just unatural.

Gosh, Dr. J., I kinda like that old beast...[%-)] Don't recall seeing it, before, but it looks remeniscent of the GG1, very interesting and purposeful. Of course, once could say that about the Garratt..

And I agree with you, Jesse. That thing gives me the heeby-jeebies.

Crandell,

I used to live near the C&G back when you could see those Whitcomb switchers as well as Baldwin road swithchers like the AS-616. Today, you can still see the occasional GP-9 (with original high short hood) and CF-7s (another beastly design!) but they are being phased out in favor of more "modern" GP-38s purchased from the Norfolk Southern.

No wonder, since I'm pretty sure it was made by GM in the 50's. I like it also, and got to see one of the two made, near Green Bay, WI about 6 years ago. Joe

OT - You can get a kit from Bowser to build one of those Aerotrains. It comes un-powered tho, however you can purchase the parts to modify it too powered....

I have to jokingly disagree with ya on that one, my 2 cents.

Of course, just about every railroad had an ugly duckling, especially in steam days.
But for well known locomotives, here are my choices:

Steam: The Southern Pacific GS-4 Daylight. The only thing going for it is the paint job and then it looks like a clown. Never liked all weather cabs, oil burners or boxy tenders.
The dual headlights are ugly too. About as far away from a good ole coal burning USRA design as you could get.

Diesel: Anything with a wide cab.

I know I'm stepping on a lot of people's toes with those selections, but it's just my opinion. I'm happy for you if you like Daylights or wide cabs.

To me the newest generation GE and EMD 6 axle locos look like they were designed by committees for different sections and they had no contact with each other and nobody knew what the unit would look like until the first one was assembled. Yes they are big and powerful looking but to me have no style.

I don't know about the Horatio Allen, but all the ones under it look like they might tip over if they take a curve with too much superelevation!

Those European locmotives that look like an 1960's bus on railroad wheels, looks like two miles of bad road.

Aero Train.... wasn't that a GM Design team fiasco of a streamlined engine pulling GM bus bodies on single axels that rode worse than a conestoga wagon? Or was it GM's plan to nail the coffin shut on rail passenger business so we could all "ride the bus"?
As for the current "style" of modern diesels(GM and GE}, isn't "UGLY" concidered a "style"? The "shipping containers" they haul across the country are pretty in comparison!

The Aero Train rode well enough at freight speeds. At high speed, however, it's air cushioned suspension bottomed out. In the days before ribbon rail, that must have been a fun experience...

GOOD GRAVY! Saying something bad about the B-36's looks by comparing it to an ugly diesel locomotive is nearly high treason! It's a pretty good bet that I could be in that picture somewhere...

....alright, so what if it is kinda ugly? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder right?
