Add me to the weathering list for this week, I have been working on a gondola and a scrap load for it.

Adam, what did you use for the screen material, if that'swhat I am seeing. Looks good, and excellent RR you picked. I remember the ITC very well, it ran threw Morton IL all the time in the 70's.

If you are telling the truth(Which I believe you), then that is one heck of a model for someone with little weathering experience. In fact, it looks great for someone with a bit of weathering experience. Was it a hideous yellow to begin with?

you bet it was. and my approch to weathering it was just brushing chalks on untill it looked right to me. Thats how I have done the few models I have weathered.

Sounds good to me. I'm not into doing one exact model yet, but combining several into one. A golden brown is much better than mustard yellow!

Yes, I have that excellent book, and still subscribe to the Alrails Yahoo group.

Jon those are fantastic! I got into Bham Southern back when I was researching the Woodward Iron Co. I seriously considered modeling it (and may still, someday). The old ex DM&IR SD 9's are my personal favs. They were built in the mid 50's and are still pullings loads to and from the Warrior River Terminal today! As I said earlier, LGM and I have sepent many days at the Terminal, Concord, Mulga, Fairfield Yard, Norell Jct, etc. We moved about an hour away from most of our Bham Southern train watching spots last summer. It's about time to do some more railfanning in those areas though. What a cool little RR!

Thanks for the memories!

Joe - I really like the shot of the CSX coal drag[tup]. Does the BLI AC6000 use the same QSI sound hardware that Atlas does?

Dave - great looking berm, I might refer to your photo when I'm scenicking my slag pit.

Adam - great work on that gon, certainly doesn't look like a 'first-timer' to me!

Craig - love those 'outward' dents in your AA gon, I'll have to learn how to do that on the 20+ scrap metal gons I plan to have on my under-construction steel mill layout.

Matt - great looking covered hopper! [BTW - glad you finally started signing your 'real' name, your screen name is impossible to abbreviate![:D]]

MellowMike, that's a wise idea about not posting pics of your stuff until AFTER it sells - but I'm glad we get to see it eventually!

Jon - your 50's-era B&W photos really capture the feel of that period, but I mostly like your Birmingham Southern pics - my favorite is the orange Birmingham Southern GP38-2. Is that a former EJ&E unit?

Grande Man, I always look forward to seeing your pics since they each tell a story!

. . .
Since this week's theme seems to be about weathering, I'll throw in some photos of very light weathering I did on my 3 Iron Belt SD's last week. First, I sprayed a layer of soot near the top of the top of the long hood:

...then I sprayed some 'road grime' on the pilot [front and rear]:

I don't feel brave enough yet to make any of my engines look really filthy yet, I can always add more dirt later![:D]

Looks like the guy is looking up at the person that built the layout. Hmmm, do our scale people realize we are their creators. I sure hope not. I may be in big trouble[;)] [:p][:p]

Great pictures. Ken those pictures of your engines scream EJ&E [tup]

I have played with the BW type pictures and I sometimes see a more realistic image.

Ken,

EJ&E and BS are/were both owned by the same parent corporation. EJ&E sent 2 or 3 GP38-2, to Alabama in the late '80's/early '90's. They were never fully repainted and all had returned to the EJ&E by the mid '90's. I will confirm numbers and dates when I lay my hands on my BS-first 100 years book.

Great work everybody. Grand Man that assistant of yours looks like he knows he stuff.

Here is a shot took of a scene I am currently working on. I found that taking these helps to find unnoticed short comings. There are more than a few of those here. Next week I hope to show some progress here.

I'm convinced. One of these days, I've got to make my own scrap gondola. When I do, I'll open up a thread just for scrap gondola pics, OK? These things are an art form unto themselves. Sure, you can buy the loads pre-built, but the ones I've seen here are just so much nicer. Keep up the good work, gang!

Thanks for the compliment ken, I may be wrong here, But I think that all of the QSI chips put in by BLI, Atlas, P2K are designed specifically for the engine they're going in. So I dont think It is exactly the same but probably very similar. Both the Atlas dash 8 and the BLI AC6000 sound great.

Here's some pics of my layout. Nowhere near as good as some others on here but considering it's the first layout I really built (at least past the track planning stages) in almost 20 years, it's not too bad.
