What do you consider the make up of the silver modern-car Sante Fe passenger train.

Someone recently posted a newly acquired set (maybe A-B and 8 cars) that looked typical, but I can’t find that post.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

For many, it's the Walthers' 'Super Chief' cars and Genesis or Intermountain F-7's.

For me it's the INTERMOUNTAIN Hi Level 'El Capitan' cars with FP 45'S

All the above are sold out. You'll have to wait for re-run's.

I guess the fifties era consist is what I was thinking about. I guess the silver corrigated sides and diesel head end.

I just wondered what comes to everyone's mind when you think of the most common example of the Super Chief.

What engines pulled it and what the cars were.

Thanks

Do you mean the prototypical make up, or what is a reasonible model?
This thread?

Hmmm, can't get the link to post right. There are supposed to be semi-colons in the blank spaces.

My model Super Chief is:
ABA F7
baggage
lounge
2 pine series sleepers
1 indian series sleeper
pleasure dome
diner
dorm
Indian series sleeper
observation

My Model El Capitan is:
F9 AB
baggage
baggage with high level transistion
step up 68 seat coach
72 seat coach
dinner
lounge
72 seat coach

The other trains are actually more interesting. The Limited Mail & Express, California Limited, and Grand Canyon regularly had a bigger mix. Many more front end cars, high level, full dome, and normal hieght cars. The only things they didn't have were the pleasure domes.

My Super Chief/El Cap consist is as follows:

ACF Baggage
ACF RPO
Budd Baggage
P/S Baggage Dormitory
68 Seat Hi Level Step Up
72 Seat Hi Level Chair
Hi Level Diner
Hi Level Lounge
72 Seat Hi Level Chair
68 Seat Hi Level Step Up
10-6 Pine Sleeper
10-6 Palm Sleeper
P/S 36 Seat Diner
Pleasure Dome
4-4-2 Regal Sleeper
4-4-2 Regal Sleeper
10-6 Pine Sleeper
Once I get it, a Division Superintendant's business car (shorty) on the tail. Thats right!

Still deciding on power, I think I will probably go with Gesesis F-7s (ABBA), but might hold out for the BLI F-7s, if they are ever released (December?).

What I have isn't prototypical - or so I'm told, but it sure looks nice going around my layout... What I have is N scale, and it consists of;

-An E-8 A & B set made by Life Like.
-An RPO
-A baggage car
-A sleeping car
-A coach
-A dining car
-A dome lounge car
-An end observation car
(All cars are made by ConCor)

I dream that one day I'll finally own an actual Super Chief like those mentioned above, but if I don't, oh well. I'm just grateful for the one I've got...

I saw that Kato is doing a nice run of Super Chief cars in N. They are doing the Regals and I think the Palm sleepers as well. It is too bad that Walthers didn't produce the Regals and Palms in HO. I had to go with brass car sides on a lot of my consist. Thank goodness for Train Station Products. Anyhow, you should be able to do a nice Super in N.

The following is a protype 1963 consist listing from a AT&SF railfan. I belileve it is fairly accurate but I can't give credit because I do not know his name. At that time, the power was F7's or F3' and ABBA or ABBBA was common.

I use the Walthers cars with the Genesis ABBBA set. The Walthers Pleasure dome is more accurate than my Coach Yard dome, and it cost only 1/15th of the Coach Yard car. The Walthers cars are done well are are worth the money for usre. If you look at the AT&SF Historical Society, you will find train consists for certain years other than the one I listed. Many of the cars listed are models that have been available in the past and will probably be rerun.

Santa Fe Summer Consists - 1963

During the summer of 1963, the Super Chief operated as 1st section of train 17/18. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the train ran in three sections, sleepers, conventional coaches, and hi-level coaches. This is the consist of 1st section.

Baggage - Express
10 roomette, 6 bedroom Sleeper
10 roomette, 6 bedroom Sleeper
4 compartment, 4 bedroom, 2 drawing room Sleeper
4 compartment, 4 bedroom, 2 drawing room Sleeper
500 PSCM Dome - Bar Lounge
600 PSCM 36 seat Diner
1339 PSCM Bar Lounge - Dormitory
4 compartment, 4 bedroom, 2 drawing room Sleeper
4 compartment, 4 bedroom, 2 drawing room Sleeper
10 roomette, 6 bedroom Sleeper
10 roomette, 6 bedroom Sleeper

The rest of the week, the train ran in two sections (the second being the hi-level El Capitan). This is the consist for the rest of the week.

Baggage - Express
48 seat Coach
44 seat Coach
44 seat Coach
44 seat Coach
1550 Budd Lunch Counter - Diner
1339 PSCM Bar Lounge - Dormitory
10 roomette, 6 bedroom Sleeper
4 compartment, 4 bedroom, 2 drawing room Sleeper
500 PSCM Dome - Bar Lounge
600 PSCM 36 seat Diner
4 compartment, 4 bedroom, 2 drawing room Sleeper
10 roomette, 6 bedroom Sleeper
10 roomette, 6 bedroom Sleeper

As a side note, Santa Fe had only two 6 bedroom, 2 drawing room, 2 compartment Sleepers., Taos and Oraibi, built by Budd in 1937 for the original lightweight Super Chief.

The second section (third section on Tuesdays and Thursdays) was the hi-level El Capitan with this consist.

60' RPO
Baggage - Express
Baggage - Express
3480 Budd Baggage - Dormitory (hi-level adaptor)
528 Budd Hi-level 68 seat Coach (steps down)
700 Budd Hi-level 72 seat Coach
700 Budd Hi-level 72 seat Coach
700 Budd Hi-level 72 seat Coach
650 Budd Hi-level 80 seat Diner
575 Budd Hi-Level Bar Lounge)
700 Budd Hi-level 72 seat Coach
700 Budd Hi-level 72 seat Coach
700 Budd Hi-level 72 seat Coach
528 Budd Hi-level 68 seat Coach (steps down)

It might be worth noting that the 10-6 sleepers came in two flavors: Budd-built "Pine" series cars and ACF-built "Palm" series cars. I think that the pairs of 10-6s at each end of the first consist had on of each.
The Super Chief carried 10-6 "Pine" series and 4-4-2 "Regal" series
cars from Chicago. The 10-6 "Palm" series car was added at Kansas
City. Because the westbound departure from Kansas City was 2:05am,
this car was ready for occupancy at 9:30pm.

santafemike is correct. The consist was usually one Palm (ACF) and one Pine (Budd) 10-6 in either pair.

For years, the Kansas City to Los Angeles sleeper was to be a Palm series car. But by the sixties, the consists book simply called out a 10-6 sleeper without specifying Palm or Pine series.

The 4-4-2 Regal sleepers also came in two varieties, some built by Pullman-Standard in 1947 and some built by ACF in 1950.

Below is a list of all classes of lightweight Santa Fe sleeper cars (in case anyone is interested) with number of cars, class, build date, builder, description. The Dinnebito 14 section cars, Cascade and Valley series cars, and the Indian 24 duplex roomette cars were not assigned to the Super Chief at any time. All of the others were for at least a time between 1936 and 1971. The Indian 11 double bedroom cars were only assigned to the Super Chief.

The New Kato F40 with Superliner sets will make a very nice Southwest Chief for those in the 80's Amtrak era. I'fe seen the first photos from Trainboard. They make a very nice 8 car set in the Phase 2 Superliner scheme. Fans of other Western trains can enjoy the set also!

Warning to LifeLike/Walthers. Your old F40 now looks very klunky compared to the new units. Kato should have a huge winner here! I hope Kato makes enough!

We need Walthers to step to the plate & produce heavyweight cars for earlier eras. We need the RR cars back into production. Con-Cor must be the next mfr to be bought by someone.
