Decoder Help
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, September 14, 2005 7:47 PM
I have installed DH163 PS Decoder in my Bachmann Spectrum 4-8-4 J class.

I am using the spectrum with my Digitrax Zephyr and I have set it 03.

When I change the knob to forward it moves back and vice versa.

I am not sure whats wrong with the decoder.

Please help me with the decoder.

Thanks
Ken

Turn the decoder around in the socket. If the motor runs backwards, the decoder is plugged in backwards. If the plug is at the end of a wiring harness, just turn the plug around.

well, it would be impossible to install it backwards in the socket. So Im assuming you wired in the harness yourself? Whether you did or not though its a simple fix. Take the loco apart and you will find 2 wires going to the motor. These wires are generally grey and orange but manufacturers like to make things difficult sometimes. Just unsolder the wires from the motor and switch them. Right motor lead to left side of motor and vice-versa. This will fix your problem.

The DH163 PS comes with an OS harness. It is indeed possible and most probable that you pluged the harness into the socket backwards. That would reverse the engine, lights, and other stuff. It will not damage the decoder BTW. Go here to see the diagram: http://loystoys.com/info/harnesses.html

Ray Seneca Lake, Ontario, and Western R.R. (S.L.O.&W.) in HO

We'll get there sooner or later!

With a proper 8-pin socket (one that actually follows the NMRA spec for such a socket), it is indeed impossible to plug the decoder in 'backwards' in the sense that anything will be damaged. Because of the wire arrangment on the socket though, the loco will run backwards, as noted.
