What is the ugliest paint scheme?
Posted by SpaceMouse on Wednesday, September 7, 2005 4:11 PM
I've always thought NYC's paint scheme was ugly, but then again anything with New York in the name kind of wrenches my gut. I think it is a anti-Yankees thing I picked up as a kid. I even hated Mantle and Marris. The Say-Hey kid was underrated while these guys got the glory.

But then again, at the club the other day, a guy said he thought my B&P yellow/black color scheme was ugly. So it takes all kinds.

I figure, hating a road name has to do with personal issues. I don't like SF or UP because they remind me of cheap toys. On the other hand I like BNSF--go figure.

No offense to CSX, but have never been fond of that paint scheme. I have 2 MP15's coming in the Genese & Wyoming road name, I wasn't real fond of their colors via pictures either, until I happened to see in person the MP15's at our local railroad, TZPR (P&PU) The B&P is a GW owned or leased road isn't it?

Yes it is. I really like the colors. But maybe that is because it runs right in front of my store.

They own 2 of the railroads in our area, P&PU and Chicago Illinois Midland, expect to see a lot of Yellow/Black units around...Sort of a large bumble bee zone [:p]

This is REALLY hard. I'm going to have to go with Trainline's F40 in Amtrak ph4...that was pure ugly...and the Amtrak Northwest (green and brown) F59PH1's. I've never seen any of these in person...so I'm going off their models.

I don't like flat black paint with plain white letter logos.(Though NS's white logo on black looks pretty cool)

Can't stand the BNSF color schemes (and wasn't too fond of the SPSF Kodachrome scheme, either), but I think it has as much to do with the colors as with my love of the good ol' ATSF.

Hands down has to be Santa Fe's warbonnet, especially on F's. Anybody got a vomit bag? Makes me want to run out into oncoming traffic! Alright, start breathing again. I am kiddin'. Seriously, though, I am not too fond of the NS plain black. Just not very exciting.

I would have to say that I'm not too fond of the Rock Island scheme. (Sorry. No offense to all you RI fans out there.)

Not really a paint scheme but the grime on the SP units so you couldn't tell what they were!

When freshly painted the red noses and black looked good.

Don't scare us like that, we thought somebody didn't like the War bonnet, that thing is beautiful, right in there with the Daylight. I don't like the brand new BNSF scheme. The colors don't match and the logo is too futuristic too be called a heritage scheme.

Futuristic!?, I always thought it looked like it was done by a kindergartener or by a drunk executive on the back of a cocktail napkin. I sold all my BNSF stock because of it.

Could be they were all out drinking with the same ad agency as Nike? You know saving money so they all shared the dinner/meeting [8)]

The ugliest paint scheme has to be the Atlantic Coast Line ghostly lime green they put on their E units after 1958?. I think they called it citrus green (any ACL historians out there). And then to accent it with red! The purple was not good but OK, I could never figure out what they were thinking. All I can figure is the person who designed it was color blind and the executives/board that approved it only got black and white prints and liked the price (probably got that color paint for free cause no one else would touch it).

Second place would have to be Katy's Kelly Green, with the MONSTER MKT plastered on the side. No style at all. Another kindergardener design.

My least favorite color scheme HAS to be UP's old passenger
scheme consisting of Armour Yellow and Brown! Can't imagine
what they were thinking. Those trains looked like rolling t**ds.[censored][swg]

Hands down, the ugliest paint jobs have to be those SD70ACe's that UP is decorating as "Heritage" engines. (Throws gas on campfire and runs like he**!)

1. PC - unimaginative black with mating worms.
2. NS - unimaginative black with a horse on the front (yippee).
3. SP & Amtrak with the bloody noses.
4. MKT - John Deere green with huge MKT.
5. Guilford - for personal reasons. Timothy Mellon sent aid to North Vietnam during the war. May he and his RR rot in -----.

Respectfully submitted for your review,

Jeff

The ugliest paint scheme is one found on a diesel. ANY diesel - period.

I agree with Cox 47. Anything CN on Illinois Central tracks is ugly. IMHO all CN engines that touch IC track should be scraped on site.

Another ugly one is UP's paint scheme. The only UP engines that are ok are the 4-8-4, 4-8-8-4, and the 4-6-6-4.

Some more ugly schemes are all of the CSX schemes, although the Dark Future scheme does describe CSX's future. ( VERY DARK )

ALL IMHO. [2c]

I never liked the Purple people eater scheme from ACL. Purple just isn't a railroad clour imho. The only other paint schemes that hit my repaint wish are the new UP herritage units . (He ducks and covers) Also I have nevr forgiven CPR for losing the classic Tuscan and Grey so any CP red schemes are on my avoid list as well. Rob

Though I respectfully differ in opinion with you on the paint schemes you have identified above, Texas Zepher, please allow me to clarify the following for the sake of record:

1) The "minty green" (my description, not official nomenclature) with red stripes scheme belonged to the Seaboard Air Line Railway (not the ACL, their #1 rival until the merger of the SAL and ACL in the late 60's forming the Seaboard Coastline Railway). The aforementioned green scheme (I believe, as you said, but I may have it backwards) superceded the SAL's 'Citrus' scheme, a striking multicolored scheme of Pullman green, orange and yellow.

2)The ACL's original diesel paint scheme was flashy purple and silver (which, IMHO, looked oh so sleek and handsome on their E-units, especially E6's). Later, the ACL changed over to a handsome, but very conservative black with yellow pinstripes and white lettering. Following the SAL/ACL merger, all units were repainted in this black and yellow scheme, with revision of the markings to read "Seaboard Coast Line" and "SCL".

I hope this information is useful to anyone out there who might be wondering. If anyone reading this finds error in my facts, please speak up.

As for my call on less appealing paint schemes...
I have to admit (even as a very enthusiastic Norfolk and Western fan) that the spartan, old white "NW" on black is dreadfully dull. [:(] The short-lived (?) b&w Penn Central scheme mentioned earlier has to be a close [yawn.] second.

Regarding new paint schemes, I find the new "BNSF Railway" sterile, corporate, and unappealing. [:(] Like the scheme or not, at least the now vanishing (?) Empire Builder warbonnet's roots were more obvious. I miss the old ATSF warbonnet schemes. [sigh]

I'm just not too fond of ANY of the new color schemes (though for some strange reason, Wisconsin Central looks pretty cool). Well, okay, the BNSF 'Heritage' scheme is not bad, but that new 'Rio Grande rip-off' logo--Excuse me?
I like the earlier diesel pre-merger paint jobs. Like from the 'forties and 'fifties, and though I think the old Santa Fe 'Warbonnet' passenger scheme was just super, I never understood BLUE freight units. Say what? But SP Daylight and Black Widows were a stroke of genius--too bad they couldn't leave them alone. And before they went to silver and orange, Western Pacific had an FT paint job that would knock your eyes out! And though I LOVE everything Rio Grande ever did with a paint-brush, my favorite scheme was still the black with yellow striping that they used on their FT's and F-3's.
Oh yah, who was the 'genius' that replaced GN's fabulous Omaha Orange and Green with "Big Sky Blue?" Someone PLEASE tell me that they made him take early retirement!
