It's all a matter of context. The SP "bloody nose" would be a contender for ugliest ever on its own, but consider that, on E units and PAs, it replaced the Daylight livery and you're adding insult to injury

Although the SF's Warbonnet, and SRR Tuxedo diesel schemes are classics, if it ain't steam, its ugly.

Of the current paint jobs out there I don't care for CSX. I liked the BNSF Heritage II units, but with the "Nike" logo on the new paint jobs it just looks like a mistake!

I guess for me it would be Penn Central. I am a fan of the Pennsy, and hated to see them go down the toilet like they did.

I always thought the Green & Yellow CNW and the Silver & Orange WP colors were pretty lame until I saw a SPSF Kodachrome... Now that was really hard on the eyes!

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned the old CSX "stealth" colors...the scheme without the yellow on the nose. To me, it looks like blue and primer!

Yes, but at least boring isn't UGLY. I can understand boring because it is usually also cheap e.g. all the roads that used to use solid black. For this thread I had to think hard for something that really was offensive to the eyes sensory input. The list of boring could go on and on.

DT&I Day-Glo Orange scheme. Maybe it saved some lives?

Although I grew up around them, I was not terribly fond of C&NW Green and Yellow. But I do have a bit of a soft spot for it...

I have to disagree with CP5415, for once. I am starting to like the modern CN more than the modern CP! (Shame on me, eh?) I love all CP paint schemes, but when either of their 'Candy Apple Red' locos gets a little dirty, they are dull, ugly, and uninsparational. With action red, you could leave a loco in notch 8 in a tunnel for a year, and it would still be more vibrant than most of the new red locos out there.

Alec

Wow, I got a bee in your bonnet! I guess I should have been more specific. I see the odd SOO loco around here and they are plain white with the grey SOO on the side. I guess they have a red nose, but are pretty much plain white. I find that boring. Sorry. The red one (like you have in your signature) isn't bad, but I find the white boring.

Ugliest to model in HO for me was the New Haven red, white, black "McGinnis Mania" scheme. If the locomotive wasn't kept clean (and most of them weren't) or had caught fire (and many of them did) they looked plain grimy.

But today, b-o-r-i-n-g can be shortened down to three letters: KCS. Yawn. This comes from someone who lives down the street from an NS yard.

Darth, I believe you are actually thinking of ACL's early purple and silver paint scheme. I really like that one, myself, but you are certainly entitled to your opinion. [:)] (I do agree that warbonnets look awesome in scarlet on silver [^]; a purple warbonnet just wouldn't cut it. [xx(])

In response to other comments on pain schemes...
[#ditto] on the Rock Island 'Bankruptcy Blue' and the GN Big Sky Blue. I'm not terribly fond of those schemes; they were downgrades IMHO. On the other hand, I agree that the WC colors are nice. To be a modern era railroad, they have an unusually classy paint scheme.[^]

Texas Zepher, please allow me to clarify the following for the sake of record:

1) The "minty green" (my description, not official nomenclature) with red stripes scheme belonged to the Seaboard Air Line Railway (not the ACL, their #1 rival until the merger of the SAL and ACL in the late 60's forming the Seaboard Coastline Railway). The aforementioned green scheme (I believe, as you said, but I may have it backwards) superceded the SAL's 'Citrus' scheme, a striking multicolored scheme of Pullman green, orange and yellow.

Thanks I was hoping a guru from those railroads would step in. At least you know the scheme I am talking about. At first I had put it as "Florida East Coast", and then thought again. I always get those three confused. I looked around for a photo to link to but was unable to find one.

Glad to help out. [:D][tup]
As you may remember, the FEC scheme looks a lot like the SP Daylight scheme (very handsome in my book).

For me the ugliest would be the colors on the loco's here, South Korea, ala Korean Rail. The engines are a taxi cab yellow with a big stripe of teal blue running down the sides. Then the passenger cars are orange and blue! However the KTX (think the new Amtrak meets the ?NTSF?(French train?)?, meets the bullet train). This train is gray and blue, very nice, very fast, too.[:o)]

Don't care for the "Swoosh" on BNSF yet again I wi***hey would go back to the old Red and Silver Warbonnet. (Although 2 of you already stated that you can't stand it). I like the new NS scheme although its still spartan by other RR standards. WC not bad. CSX[xx(] I hope they do die of a dark furture here too. I would have to say the most UNDERRATED scheme that I can think of that has not been named yet that I love and hope to model someday would have to be Denver and Rio Grande. Always the underdog to the end.

The old C&O blue and yellow cab unit freight scheme. Then they did a hideous black and white "safety stripe" scheme that was thankfully short lived.

If there are no dogs in heaven, then I want to go where they go.

Don't scare us like that, we thought somebody didn't like the War bonnet, that thing is beautiful, right in there with the Daylight. I don't like the brand new BNSF scheme. The colors don't match and the logo is too futuristic too be called a heritage scheme.

Somebody doesn't like the warbonnet! ME! I can not stand red and silver warbonnets. To me, it is the ugliest paint scheme ever. But thats just me. To each there own.

Yeah, I forgot to mention the swoosh. The possibility of the person who drew that being drunk or high at the time comes to mind. Either that or they were posing Nike.

1)Anything with a bloody nose.
2)Norfolk Southern units. (Look Mommy! A HORSEY! Ohhh, MOMMY, THE HORSEY RAN OVER THAT CAR!)The earliest NS units were nice, but black and white? Oh yeah, I forgot, they've got a horse on the front. Now new and improved with horses on the sides!
3)Especially the Ex-SP bloody noses with RED UP lettering. Crazy.

Off the soapbox time.

Guilford, killed Maine Central's Harvest Yellow and Gold.

Nothing creative about black/charcol grey with a orange line around it and a big "G". Atleast the name Maine Central exist on paper.

Thats kind of funny. I don't like the old Tuscan and Grey but really like the red schemes with the PacMan logo. I don't like the new ones without the PacMan, though. Not sure why. I don't like the new BNSF paint scheme much. Come to think of it, there aren't many new schemes I like. Oh, yeah, and the SOO is rather boring, too.

Now my favorite paint scheme HAS to be Santa Fe's Warbonnet. I don't care if it's common with toys or not. I'll buy pretty much ANY engine with the Warbonnet!! (well, except maybe a GG-1, or 4-8-8-4 Big Boy.[:O][:O])
