There are a few not-so-nice people on here once in a while, but for the most part, we try to ignore those people. Nearly everyone I've encountered on here has been more than nice, and this forum is a far cut above most in that regard.

I recommend you just ignore the goofball post and pay it no mind. The rest of us certainly aren't concerned about it. Just ask your questions and post your comments and let's move on. Trains are too fun and the day's too short to worry about mean-spirited forum members.

Lotus 98, You are definitley not a TROLL. TROLLS live in the lower peninsula of Michigan (Under the Bridge-Mackinaw) . So don't take this accusation seriously, unless you are a Michiganian of the lower peninsula persuasion. I think it is time to get your leg back from Dennis B and move on asking questions, reading, and learning about TRAINS.Enjoy!

Something I have noticed, on this forum and the modelrailroad forums here and elsewhere they all seem like a good group of guys, all helpful, infact I can't think of a post that was off color or demeaning. Unlike the railfan forums that seem to be more about cliques and what they know you never will, what's even more odd is the same ones that are a little crass on the railfan forums are pretty big gentlemen here.

Why is that? Again all I see in the MR forums are compliments, encouragement and help.

Guys,

Lotus, the trolls that are mentioned above have a particular writing and response pattern so bascially revealing that it's the same person. It's very possible that on a post or two that you made, your pattern may have been similar to that of the troll. So, don't sweat it.

I study writing patterns myself sometimes and notice that each person has a style. For example, mIne is easy to recognize. My thoughts are organized, sometimes wordy, but not always in sequential order. I think calmly but quickly, so at times my comments appear disjointed. This is why if I were to take on another forum name, most of the old timers here would quickly recognize me as soon as they read my posts.

Enjoy the forum! As for the person that accused you, he'll likely read this and be cool with you. The guy he mentions above likely irked him before.

Lotus, how exactly would the man "know" that you were those other people? He doesn't, there is no possible way to know something like that, unless he can hack into your computer, and look through the screen to see who is typing, and under what username. He has no idea what exactly he is saying, he has no proof to it. There are thousands of people on this forum, and I'm sure that many of them structure their thoughts similarly.

Ignore what he says. You have come across as someone very mature for their age, not someone posing to be someone else.

Supply and demand plays a big part as well Chinese goods are usually not as well made as goods made right here at home, the more companies outsource the more demand there is for good American products, these can now be sold at a higher price and some one will start building factories in the US for them.

I've been in printing for 20 years and seen a lot of small shops that had young family members working at them.Mc Donalds, Burger King, Krogers. All these places can hire 13 or 14 year olds to do certain jobs on a limited work schedual.

I think this falls into the category of so what? Whether he is or isn't, I don't care unless he is somehow degrading the forums, which doesn't seem apparent. Personally, I started working when I was 11 years old at an A&W. Yes, my parents owned it, but I made more money with less work than my paper route. I worked as a gas jockey when I was fourteen and had we not purchased a different restaurant, it is conceivable that I could have gone to work at many different places. Still, reading those other posts does make it quite suspicious. I just don't see the point in pretending you are something you are not, but thats your prerogative. Unless you somehow degrade the forums, I just say, "so what?"

A troll is an online denizen that baits a forum by making statements or asking questions to deliberately incite emotional reactions. Usually they hang around and fan the flames to keep the anger, etc. going.

If you legally work as a student, taxes come off paychecks right? They do at least in Canada. I don't know what Idaho State taxation laws are, I just know of what it is in Ontario and as the federal government.

The age doesn't mean much either as labour laws are different in Canada then in the U.S. I don't know what the legal age limit is in Idaho for working in a printing shop or Burger King so unless you know and can prove otherwise; the only thing you are doing is trolling.

So, if you have proof to back up your clames against Lotus, keep your negative attitude to yourself. Also, even if he was a troll, nothing pleases a troll more then for us to respond. Believe me; in the Magazine part of the forum we have had one guy who has had at least 5 alias including Trainfinder22. If it is a problem, evetually they will slip up and Bergie will nuke the troll.

I thought if you did a lot of reading and not much posting you were "lurking". Actually, I don't see anything wrong with that. When i first started coming to these forums I just watched a while before I started posting. And I don't post as much on Model Railroader as I do Trains. That doesn't mean I don't read and enjoy it.

Don't you think that's better than the 13 year old kid we had on here this spring who treated this like his personal chat room? Of course, now the question is...was he REALLY a 13 year old kid?

Not caught, just working on the railroad while I still have summer break. About the employment I do as much part timework as I can get, most of it for my father, he produces customer service training material, for companies. I help with the layout and printing, one of the bigger projects I worked on was the Burger King project. I don't claim to pay income tax; I rue the day I will have too. I get fed up enough at the fact I pay sales tax and can't vote. Are you convinced yet?

This reminds me of the fights at the bike racks after school, usually I was the one in the fights as my cousin was the big guy and I was the smaller guy, they always picked on me, but I always stood up and held my ground. Well judging from the crowd in here with the help of your aggressive and antagonistic posts you seem to have picked up a real fan club. Of course it helps to spread the love by going out and picking fights by going into other forums like CTT (although you are a HO man) to stir up trouble.

Thats all for me I will go back to my new hobby of collecting dust bunnies. My new hobby that you kindly tipped me off on in the CTT forum. Thanks it was very consciderate of you to tip on this new and exciting hobby. It is very relazing and I rarely get in conflicts in the on line forum for it.

Peace in the MR forum. The post that this grew from is in the CTT forum and should have stayed there to keep it in context. Instead of playing one forum against the other.

I posted some really wierd stuff a couple of weeks ago, It turned out that after I taught my Gson how to find the site, he figured out how to post. I convinced him he should at least use his own handle. I don't see that he has posted stuff much since. I read some of the stuff on Trains that Lotus098 was posting, and wondered why such a string should even exist. I really appreciste the advice I get here as I try to catch up after 20 years doing other things. However, there is another even more sinister meaning of trolling, and that needs to be kept off this forum.

Actually the only place I have quoted or linked to is the Model Railroader forum. I put the other topic over there because this was the place with a higher number of UP bashers who needed to see some facts, since they might not feel obliged to come down here if they model O scale. I like TrainFreak409 (who is also a teenager, but doesn't always write like one, post all over the place.)

I don't know about the dust bunny thing it was just something that lotus098 tipped me off on. I think he said it to me as a meens of dismissing my negative feelings about the UP charges that I was posting about.

Anyways that snarky comment really openned a new world to me about the new and exciting world of Dust bunnies and dust bunny collecting. Who knew there could be such variety. Check out www.dustbunnies/forums/collecting/landscapes.com. It changed my whole outlook on my hobby and I am tearing down the layout to build my new collecting space.

At least on the dust bunny forum no one comes around with beligerant and half formed "facts" about why my opinion on UP and thier fee collecting is wrong.

I said something to the effect that if you could not afford the UP licensing (gave an actually number), you should probably get a cheaper hobby, like collecting dust bunnies. Of course, it is a joke.

OK, here's what I think about this "problem." It's so easy on this and all other forums to be someone your not. Put any name, have aliases, be a troll or a flamer ,and it doesn't matter, cuz no one knows who you are! A while back someone on one of these forms suggested that we ALL use our real names. What would be so bad about that?

If you get right down to it, those of us who choose to be "who we are" are actually quite reachable. If you use some common sense, our profile and our name, you could actually find us. (Maybe that's a bad thing nowdays). But I like it when I look at a post or in a profile and actually KNOW who I'm talking to. So, Mr. Lotus 098, I'd like to think you're a young fella, but unfortunately, as someone else above said, maybe you're NOT. If you're who you say you are, blow it off and stop worrying. Cuz it really don't matter what the rest of us think.

The dust bunny thing was a way I was dissmissed for my short sighted and borderline communist views on UP fund collection methods. Apparently I spend too much of my time in a pro-Up-bashing area and I needed to be taught the err of my ways. I don't know about everybody else, but tis whole thing seems like a waste of good web space. A big crowd has gathered around to see the school yard fight. It's like when you see an accident up ahead, everybody slows down to see if they can see how bad of an accident it really was. Yes I know this sounds morbid, but it is just human nature. I read this forum a lot, I don't make a lot of posts. One star or fifty stars what difference does it really make? Our hobby is relaxing lets keep it that way and forget about who said what. After all, not all of us are still in grade six.

I am working on my dustbunny model of a UP GP-50 and unit trailer train.

I know what you are going to ask so I will beat you to it. No I am not going to pay UP a dime.

I started by unravelling a yellow sweater over a sheet of paper. I then carefully tipped the paper up and made a "dust ball". This step is tricky because the rest of the model is built off this base. The color of the model is due to the dust used.

I found that the best place to get sweaters for this is a thrift shop. It takes several sweaters in various colors and some time to build up a nice dust train. It is also tricky to find a good work area. A good wind will distroy minutes of work so it is best to work in a corner or other protected area like under the bed. When you are done some hairspray will set you dust bunny model and it can be carefully transfered to your dust bunny landscape or layout as we call them in the US.

On a different note. My advice for any young people is to NEVER comment on your age in a public forum. Most people are good but some are not. And in a less serious note sometimes they will use your age against you by dismissing your opinion. So it is in your best interest to keep school stuff and age under your hat. No one needs to know how old you are here. Congratulations on your choice of hobby.

Maybe I can convince you to join the dust bunny model sub-group of the hobby. It is cheap which means you can save that lawn mower money for college. It is easy to change scales and the only real expence is hairspray for that final set.

And while I am thinking of lawn clippings I wonder if anyone is making compost models. True it would be somewhat time based but you could use the older grass clippings to model a pretty good UP with the grey and yellow coloring.

Oh another thought on the compost modeling. Fresh grass clippings could be modeled into a good Burlington Northern scheme. Circa 70's and 80's. I'm heading over to the golf course tommorrow. I bet if I play my cards right I could get a truck bed full for next to nothing.

Well then so what if it's nonsense? I have listened to so much nonsense over the past years it becomes necessary to just smile politely and filter out the junk that is obviously not true. I'm 25 years old 26 in September and I have another 50 or 60 years maybe more of listening to garbage.

If I run for political office which I am thinking on doing at some point when I feel like it, the amount of garbage talk will increase 10 fold.

Dennis, cut him some slack. Big deal if he can discuss things on an adult level. I did the same thing when I was 14. By the age of 14, every adult I knew considered me one as well. I talked about everything with the adults, and still do when I get the chance. Just because someone is a teenager, doesn't mean they are immature, wild, or unsensable, like the oh-so-common stereotype portrays us to be.

Lotus's reaction might differ because it is a different topic. The UP topic is about his interest in UP, this topic is about someone saying stuff against him. It sounds to me like he is just being defensive right now.

And for your information, some Burger Kings will hire 14. I know, as I almost got a job at one, but decided against it.

I do pay taxes, sales tax, gas tax (for the lawnmower), taxes on shipping, and I directly see how much my parents pay. No you are only the second person to ask, the other was antigates on the forum about UP's flag. You have to remember I am so knowledgeable and opinionated, because I listen a certain radio show (nobody picked up on the Rio Linda, joke[;)]), study lots of books, study economics all the time, and associate with adults (not a lot of kids). Many people have commented to my parents how I act much more like an adult than I do a child. Many people have a certain pattern of writing, although I would have phrased much of what was said by the other people you suppose to be me, quite differently. I can get mad, when people display an extreme lack of logic, they use opinion, I use facts, then I don't get flamed, I get roasted alive. So I tend to sound irritated, on certain topics. I am as straight as you can get. However I have some fond ideas about the "good old days", so it may sometimes sound like I lived through them.

Just a couple of quick comments. Beyond the obvious downside to this crazed wich hunt. James is a kid. On a work front or even in life some teenagers are more articulate than others. I am a retail store manager and have hired the odd 14 15 year old kid. All of whom shocked the heck out of me with their level headedness and wise beyond their years knowledge.yes there are federal codes but most if you check into them are worded tthat as long as the parents don't mind and certain hour retrictions are in place you can hire young teens. And yes they would have taxes deducted from their paychecks. You woukld have to file taxes to get them back and most kids would/will at the end of the tax year.I'm in Canada but I'm sure that IRS rules aren't all that much different than Rev Cans. Lets end this stupidity kiss and make up and get back to trains what this forum is really all about. Enough of this he sad she said garbage. Rob

So? I'm around his age and consider myself very oppninionated (sp?) and into politics. I have some different veiwpoints. I consider myself somewhat knowledgable (although trains aren't one of my good subjects). Have you ever heard of the 13-14 year olds graduating from Harvard? (for the record I'm not anywhere near that level). My point is there are kids that defy the standard. I'm guessing Mr. Lotus is one of them.
