Again: A simple well worded question and 70 different responses, jokes , guesses, wrong answers, way off topic responses and other gibberi***han the answer, Does no one ever factually answer in a correct, direct manner ? Some responses were from people who admitted they do NOT know the answer. Maybe we should try again:

Some of these regional railroads have been quite successful. My absolute favortie is the Arizona & California. In my humble opinion, they have an absolutely sharp paint scheme and do a great job in keeping their equipment clean. You can go to http://www.railpictures.net When you get to the main page, just type in Arizona and California in the "Key Word" box and then click on Find the Photos Sharp looking units!

You are totally right Tony....I didn't know the Arizona and California railroad even existed until i stumbled across a small yard of their's just outside of Parker Arizona when traveling in my RV on vacation last year....the locomotives were beautifully painted and clean as a whistle...Another short line i came across was in helper Utah..I believe it was called the "Utah Line"..they too had nice locomotives in a really nice yellow and blue, and gray paint scheme...chuck

It's all about merging these days, and many great roads (and their names) seem to be disappearing.

This a little off of main subject but reading one comment {Hard Ad} concerning mergers.
I retired from Santa Fe RR after 30 years as a Car Knocker {Inspector} and could not forsee the Santa Fe ever merging with another RR. I always figured that they were too large and well established to merge with anyone. And to top it off the merging has the other railroads name AHEAD of Santa Fe.
I am not even going to mention the other railroads name account of ending up with being more depressed. "Well. Kinda depressed-".

The company is not the "Chesapeake-Seaboard Transportation Co." It is CSX Transportation. Chessie+Seaboard+All other entities, or combined(X)=CSX. Transportation. It is that simple.

There is a considerable difference between reporting marks and a logo. CS was the reporting marks of the Colorado and Southern, a CB&Q subsidiary; C&S was the logo.

I'll say it again: Who knows why CSX didn't adopt CS as their logo.

I knows.

The CS is taken by the Colorado & Southern Railway. It is a short line(?) in Colorado, near Denver. It is now listed as a fallen flag, though. (?)

In the great spirit of the Pennsylvania Railroad-New York Central Railroad merger of the 1960s - Penn Central, remember them? - when CHESSIE SYSTEM and SEABOARD SYSTEM were getting ready to merge in the 1980s(?) they should have called themselves the CHESS BOARD RAILROAD - if for no other reason than simplicity - but then that would have deprived us of this wonderful thread as to what the X in CSX stands for.

NOTE: it doesn't stand for anything - they couldn't use CST for reporting marks because they were already taken (by whom I don't know); neither could they use CSX for reporting marks because X is restricted to independent car owners - TTX???? - so CSXT became the reporting marks of CHESAPEAKE- SEABOARD TRANSPORTATION COMPANY. Why didn't they just adopt CS as the logo for their railroad equipment??? Who knows!!!

Or, it could be their own private railway, the "X" being the standard "private company" tag.

Wow, I forgot I even made this topic![:O] I'm surprised someone went back and found it.

Sorry, can't think of anything right now that CSX or some other railroad abbreviation would stand for.[:D]

NS= Needs Steam, UP= UnSpecific, CSX= Can't Ship (Xpletive)!

C&O = Cheap & Ornery, N&W = Nickle Plate & Wabash, SBD = Slowed by Decrepitude

If everybody is thinking alike, then nobody is really thinking.

I can see it now, the UPSFCSX railroad in every single color used by the Union Pacific, Santa Fe and CSX in a bunch of stripes. Woah!! That would be interesting!![:O][:O][:O][:O][:O][:O][:O][:O][:O]

And one board of directors would demand royalties from everyone!!!

wrongo. Actually, the CSXT label is just "CSX Transportation", with the "t" of course standing for transportation. And, CSX stands for Chessie and Seaboard just like everyone else says, but the "X" is for something like the growth potential. I don't think we'll ever agree on exactly what the X stands for though!!

CSX #138 has panels from another locomotive. The extra C is the swapped panel. On the other side of the locomotive, it reads "CSXX," due once again to the panel change.

Could it possibly be "Come, Saint Xavier," since divine intervention may be necessary to return the road to full profitability? [}:)]
