In the great spirit of the Pennsylvania Railroad-New York Central Railroad merger of the 1960s - Penn Central, remember them? - when CHESSIE SYSTEM and SEABOARD SYSTEM were getting ready to merge in the 1980s(?) they should have called themselves the CHESS BOARD RAILROAD - if for no other reason than simplicity - but then that would have deprived us of this wonderful thread as to what the X in CSX stands for. NOTE: it doesn't stand for anything - they couldn't use CST for reporting marks because they were already taken (by whom I don't know); neither could they use CSX for reporting marks because X is restricted to independent car owners - TTX???? - so CSXT became the reporting marks of CHESAPEAKE- SEABOARD TRANSPORTATION COMPANY. Why didn't they just adopt CS as the logo for their railroad equipment??? Who knows!!!
