Re-motoring a 4-6-4 Hudson Gilbert Corp.-American Flyer brand loco

40 years ago, my father bought me a Gilbert Corp.-American Flyer 4-6-4- Hudson with the chugging mech. in the tender. The armiture burned out and the loco sits idol on my layout. I would like to have it re-motored and all attempts locally have failed to find somewhere to take it for this work.

Perhaps this question might better be posed on one of the other Trains.com forums - Classic Toy Trains Forums. That's where the guys who are into this stuff hang out.

I see those engines at swap meets fairly often (of course the ones I see may have the exact same problem). I would not do anything ra***hat could decrease whatever collector;s value it has. Sitting in a display cabinet forever is not a shameful fate for such a veteran scale model.
