Posted by tomytuna on Saturday, March 26, 2005 6:35 AM
After all the waiting, I have purchased the "new" turntable. Here is my 2 cents worth. We now have it installed on layout and it's is running just beautiful.
!. Indexing is suppurb
2 Motor runs nice and quiet
3 ONE ISSUE-- had to install small weights on bridge to keep gears down hard on track inside pit...it did pop up without weight and would skip...possibly causing stripping of gears if continued..etc..after weights install..running like a million bucks!...well that's it.....so far.....Tom

Sure sounds like most of Walthers animated products - you always have to tweak them to make them work as advertised, if at all. Too bad they cannot produce something that works without having to fix it yourself.

I understand their operating transfer table didn't work very well either, it was later discontinued. Same as their rotary car dumper, major work required to make it do what it was supposed to do. As long as you understand this and are prepared to make something of theirs work I guess they are passable.

I wonder why this is? Do they design these models and have them produced overseas without any testing of prototypes? "Oops! That doesn't work very well. But let us offer it to the hobby public anyway."

I have a turntable for sale if anyone is interested. It's a Custom Model Railroad 105' still in the box. I purchased and built one and then bought the second only to find out that a 90' would "fit" better since it's in the town at the end of my branchline.

Here is a picture of the first one that I built, before painting.

This is the pit without the bridge. I wanted it ti be grassey and unkept. I'm going to put a couple of sheep and a tire in there this weekend

This is the TT complete and installed in the layout.

These are my pictures for the one that is built - I'm wanting to sell one that isn't built. If you are intersted in the kit or would like for me to build it for you please contact me at teffy@pernet.net

Thanks, have a blessed day and remember SANTA FE ALL THE WAY

It's $300 because it comes complete with computerized indexing, it's NOT just a motorized turntable that spins. Now look at the price of that NYRS indexing system, and add the cost of a turntable kit to that.. the Walthers is actually a bit of a bargain.
The BAD news is,, it's not likely that you can getone unless your LHS ordered more than just those for the people who preordered. Found out from my LHS, they ordered just enough to fillt he preorders, not even one for store stock, and now Walthers is saying they are sold out and no more are expected. Typical Walthers.
The table itself is Heljan, syas so right ont he box. The electronics are by Lenz. Mark Gurries posted a nice review on the DCC4Everyone Yahoo group. Only downside for DCC sound users seems to be that the system incorporates an automatic polarity reversal for the bridge - mechanically done with contacts rather than electonic, thus causing sound cutouts as the bridge rotates. That could probably be resolved by modifying the contact system and usign an electronic auto-reverser.

Walthers now says that they are "in transit," which means they actually could be sitting on thier loading dock now.

I keep debating with myself if I'm gonna buy this thing that I know will have to sit on a shelf for years until I have the room for a big layout. But my favorite part of railroading is engine servicing, and I would love to do it on a grand scale.

$300 bucks .... dang. If you don't watch out, the expense of this hobby can sneak up and bite ya on the rear end!

Tom

I too have purchased one of the new Walthers turntables, but have not yet installed it. I was interested in your comments. Could you elaborate on the weights you installed - what kind and where you located them. Thanks!

Has anyone installed one of the new 130' Walthers turntables on a DCC layout? I was curious to know if a reversing unit is required. I'm running my MA&G with a Digitrax Radio Super Chief. Thanks!

Teffy,
That turntable looks great. I would take the 105 off your hands, but I need a 130 for my Big Boy!
