Water Level Route

David, perhaps your better half (Diane?) could sneak you in some fast food.  The "right" choices should elevate your sodium levels pretty quickly! Laugh

LaughLaughLaugh  Fast food in the hospital, that's hilarious MikeYes  Don't see how it couldn't raise sodium levels.  But what's so funny about it, and not, is for some people, fast food could be the reason they ended up in the hospital in the first placeIndifferent

Yeah, that old B&W Mercury is one of my favorites as well.

I'm hopeful you can find good O'l Otis the right vet to get his leg taken care of soon.

This was our Otis:

He was such a passive and friendly boy. Just showed up one cold December day. Someone must have dumped him but fortunately he found his way here to 'kitty oasis'.

Yeah, that old B&W Mercury is one of my favorites as well.

That Mercury 'bathtub' streamlining was designed by the Case School of Engineering here in Cleveland. The NYC turned the job over to a bunch of kids with sharp pencils and slide rules. I never really warmed to the design but it WAS innovative. I do like the interim (pre Dreyfuss Hudson) design on the Commodore Vanderbilt:

Hi Mike,

The problem with eating fast food is that you are getting lots of fat. That will kill what's left of my liver for sure.

Cheers!!

Good morning, everyone.  Bacon, eggs, and coffee, please.

David and I are on the same page.  I'm taking the car in to get serviced.  I now have to pay them to do all the things I used to do before I got old.  Sad

I think Spring is over.  Today we will hit 97°.  It's also humid, so it will be a draining day to work outside.

I ran some trains yesterday.  I need to do that more often -- working on scenery and buildings distracts me from the fun of running the trains.

Have a great day, everyone.

How about trying to build a cantilever signal setup on the layout?

You certainly got that right Dave.

There was this medical program that had a segment on an autopsy, on a unhealthy deceased patient that died as a result of high cholesterol.  My memory doesn't recall the specific complications.  The doctor took some white gunk out of a vien and asked, do you know what this is? (The interns looked puzzled), it's McDonald's he said.

Abbott Northwestern Hospital, probably second to the Mayo Clinic for medical Excellence, is recognized Nationwide.  I've been a visitor there on many occasions.  It fascinated me they actually had a McDonalds in the hospital on the first floor.

That's it!  That was your only food choice, if you were a visitor and weren't going anywhere anytime too soon.  Perhaps the hospital administrators were promoting job securityLaugh...Whistling

Hope you get discharged in good health soon Dave.  I'll bet your anticipating some good home cooked mealsDinner

Have a great day guysSmile

A quarter pounder with cheese contains 33% daily value for fat. Not a problem if eaten once a day provided the other meals are low fat. Certainly not a problem if eaten once in a while.

The biggest problem, that I think someone mentioned, is the amount of sodium contained in processed food products. The same quarter pounder with cheese contains 1140mg, but get this - a Panera Mediterranean Veggie sandwich has slightly more than half the fat but 1310mg sodium. Panera chicken sandwiches have more fat and twice as much sodium as the McDonalds quarter pounder.

No one will call McDonalds healthy, but don't assume it's even remotely the worst prepared food you can eat.

Good morning from the cool and cloudy West Coast where 110 fires are burning in the Province. I am enjoying this cooler weather as it makes it easier to be out doing all the heavy work around the property I seem to be doing this year, not to mention pounding off 10k.

Thanks to everyone for your condolences for our old dog, they are much appreciated.

Thanks, Jim, no the old girl was not into watching hockey unless the popcorn came out.Laugh

TF, nice job on the condo, you're hired! I need to do another reno and may just hire someone for the first time ever.

Brent, I want to express my apologies and condolences. When I made my last post I somehow got wrapped up in crafting the post I completely forgot to send you condolences on your loss.

No need to apologize Chris, I miss things all the time when posting, hard to keep up sometimes.

For some reason I seem to be getting a problem with food getting 'stuck' just before it gets into my stomach

I occasionally have a swallower issue on the top end as a result of my spine being full of Arthritis and creating neurological issues, my spine looks like a melted candle on X-Ray. My wife says if I was a dog they would put me down.Laugh

The wife and I were watching a new building go up over the weeks when we went into town and it was obviously going to be a fast-food joint. One day we drove by and it was a new McDonald's and the sign said grand opening, come in for a free Big Mac. The wife turned to me and asked "When was the last time you were ever in a McDonald's?" Years I said, can't remember. Me too she said.

Funny thing about the body, if you look after it, it will last a long time. Staying fit cost nothing. How much does a brisk walk five times a week cost? A blood panel will show the results of being fit, not to mention blood pressure/heart rate etc. Now throw in proper nutrition and WATCH OUT! Again proper nutrition cost nothing.

I am not perfect, I like the occasional good scotch or rum. If I have a drink two or three nights in a row my BP goes up 10-15 points. BP is not a problem for me as mine is around 105/60 on average so a few drinks pushes it up to 120/70 for a day or two. If BP was an issue for me I would not touch alcohol. How hard can it be?

People keep their cars and houses in tip-top shape and that can cost $$$ to do at times. It costs nothing to keep themselves in tip-top shape.

Best get at it.

All the best to all.

Brent

Good afternoon.

Except for beer, I stay away from carbs.  I typically don't eat pasta very often, and a baked potato just shows up with a nice steak.  It's been some years since I had fast food.  The burgers have gotten very small and dry, and it feels like it's just a bun with not much inside.

We'll be getting another quarter steer this fall, so our meat supply should last a while.  Our produce mostly comes from a good farm stand down the road.  Other meats are from the butcher shop, and fish from local fish markets.

The animals get commercial food.  We had one of those "healthy" cat foods, but they changed the formula drastically and, of course, denied it, but we could immediately tell it looked different, and neither cat would touch it.  They're on cans from Petco now, after a lot of experimentation to find something that each of them likes.

OK, I'll have to admit to being an outlier here ...

I like McDonalds.  I like their breakfast sandwiches and their coffee.  I also like Big Macs, and the McDonalds french fries are better than most other fast food places.

One other nice thing about McDonalds -- on long car trips, you can pretty well know that the bathrooms in McDonalds are cleaner than many others along the highways.

I wouldn't eat there everyday (or even every month).

Yep, dog food manufacturers change the ingredients all the time and that can affect the health of an animal in short order. My wife checks the ingredients of the food before she puts in the monthly order and then checks the labels on the bags when they arrive. Twice now the ingredients on the website did not match the ingredients on the bags that arrived, they had changed. There were fireworks as that was reported to the Feds.

Our monthly order.

On the news tonight they reported how the enrollment in kids baseball is way down again this year. I played as a kid and as an adult played in some very competitive industrial leagues. I coached kid's baseball for years and it was so popular we always had a hard time finding enough coaches. I guess playing baseball for today's kids means a joystick on the couch.Sigh

I am still very much in touch with three of my childhood friends and we were unstoppable on the ice as kids. All four of us are still in excellent shape approaching 70. I tend to think playing organized sports as kids had something to do with staying in shape throughout our lives.

One of the neighbourhood kids had a serious heart issue he was born with and right from the get-go, the Doctors said he could drop dead at any time and we kids were warned it could happen one day when we were playing together. He was always part of the gang when it came to board games Hotwheels and other passive activities but not sports. We lost touch after high school and then one day I ran into an old friend and she introduced me to her husband. It was this childhood friend with heart issues. Considering they said he would not make adulthood it was a surprise to see him. He was still skinny as a rail as he knew putting on weight would do him in. He did drop dead at 54 but credited his diet for letting him live as long as he did.

I was in the workforce for 36 years and always packed food from home, sometimes more than one meal as I worked long days often. It seems packing a lunch for work is unheard of these days, it is always fast food. No wonder life spans are getting shorter.

Yikes, I'm going to the doctor this morning to find out what the plumbing problem is.  I'm thinking they misdiagnosed diverticulitis, which could be a good thing, with exception of unneeded antibiotics.

Someone here said that sometimes you have to be your own doctor, as we're all best at knowing ourselves.  Since two separate heavy antibiotic treatments, my lower abdominal problem seems to have gotten worse.  That crap kills all the good bacteria you have in your gut.

The sharp pain on the left and sometimes centered, comes and goes without antibiotics for well over a year now. Internal infections don't just go away by themselves.  I'm thinking it's irritable bowel syndrome.  At least I'm hoping that's all it isHuh?

Mr. TF, you are, of course, correct, “The Lord of the Rings. However, I shouldn’t have been lazy and used the abbreviation, so I hope the following makes up for my laxness!

Note: I tried to find what an “equivalent” US timber would be but failed.  Totara is a highly durable native softwood which was one of the dominant native pine species which was extensively milled.

Amongst the many exhibits in the Timber Museum at Putaruru was this model bridge, of indeterminant scale.

TTTC Ongaroto Bridge by Bear, on Flickr

Completed in 1905 by the Taupo Totara Timber Company for their 3’6” gauge logging railway, the actual 230’ long bridge spanning the Waikato River, was “reputed” to be, at the time, the longest single span timber bridge in the world. 150,000 feet of green heart totara was used in its construction, the pairs of circular arches on each side of the bridge created from seven 4” x 15” laminations bolted at 4-foot centres. The arches enclosed a parallel chord girder truss, which provided load distribution.
The bridge was in service until it was replaced in 1931, by which time it was getting rather tired with the joints beginning to work loose, after the accumulated use by heavy logging trains.
In the end, as a precaution, the loco crew were not permitted to cross with the train; instead, the fireman and any passengers crossed on foot first, the driver starting the train off, then jumped off, letting it cross at a very slow speed and following it across on foot; the fireman stopping the train once it had crossed, allowing everyone to reboard the train!

The bridge was dismantled and the timber sold, with no incidences occurring.

Her-in-Doors, who travelled Europe fairly extensively, before we met, made a similar comment to yours, in that the McDonalds restrooms could be relied upon for their cleanliness no matter where she was.

I do dispute your “cost nothing” claim, Batman. In my case, it cost time! I should state though, that I guess in my case it was “self-inflicted” but I think back to the amount of times that meals were interrupted, or “eaten” on the run…Bang HeadBang HeadSigh
“Time to spare? Travel by air!”

While I cook with salt, I rarely add it to any meal once plated. That said, on one occasion when working up in Fiji, I found myself adding salt to my already salted chips (fries); the body must have needed sodium!!

Cheers, the Bear.Smile

Good Morning Diners.  Janie, just coffee this morning.

Mr B & Brent, we went through several different dog foods trying to find a solution to occasional gas problems with one of our dogs.  There didn't seem to be a pattern to his issue so the food was the last explanation we had.  We seem to have found one that solved it, but never thought about them changing ingredients.  Will have to keep an eye on that.

We end up getting more fast food than I would like, mostly due to being on the road for my daughter's soccer schedule.  Lunch, however, is always packed from home.  One of my wife's coworkers stops at Burger King on her way in every morning and gets a Whopper and a large Coke.  Every day.  The woman apparently weighs about 100 pounds soaking wet, but I can't imagine the condition her body is in.

John, I agree, McDonalds breakfast sandwiches are wonderful.  Those I don't get very often.  Do make equivalents at home for dinner every so often.  I love breakfast for dinner. Dinner

Mr B, I'm curious how much meat you get from a 1/4 steer.  I've tried several times to talk my wife into going that route, but haven't had any luck getting through yet.  We eat beef regularly and I would certainly prefer it to start leaning more toward the steak realm.  Should be easier to do buying 1/4 cow than bit by bit at the store.  That's when you pay more attention to the price.

Bear, incredible story about the bridge.  Can you imagine running a train like that in today's day and age?

As for our dog with the leg issue, we ended up emailing our vet back (was how they sent the surgery estimate and date) telling them we were not comfortable waiting a month and a half and if they couldn't refer us to another vet to perform the surgery, then we would find one.  They responded immediately explaining the date was a typoHmm.  They were very apologetic.  He now goes in for surgery in two and a half weeks.  Much better.

Has anyone else ordered anything from Arizona Rock & Mineral lately?  I ordered ballast from them two weeks ago and still haven't seen it yet.  Not even an email.

Good morning, diners.  Bacon, eggs, and coffee please.

I wish I could say it's going to be a great day.  I wish.  It's hot, humid, and I have to cut the grass.  These are the days it's nice to be inside in a cool house with all the window shades closed.  One of my daughters lives about 100 miles away, and they had baseball-sized hail last night.  I'm sure a new roof is in their future.

JaBear

With my family of wife and three daughters, car trips were a real adventure.  I could use any gas station bathroom.  Not good enough for them.  I got very used to stopping several times until they all found the 'right' restroom.  McDonalds' restrooms were fairly consistent.

Time for breakfast -- then out to the lawn work.  I want to be finished before 10:00 a.m.

I should have time for more layout work -- making progress on the new building.  Another supply issue, though.  I need more certain sized styrene strips that I thought I had plenty of.  The nearest store where I could find some is 50 miles away, so I will probably order some and have to wait a while.

Lion, if you're reading this, I hope you are doing well.

Mike, we have a refrigerator-sized vertical freezer in the garage.  It will hold a lot more than a standard kitchen fridge because it's not full of doodads like vegetable crispers and icemakers.  The quarter steer, all cut and shrink-wrapped into steaks, roasts and 1 pound sleeves of burger meat, pretty much fills that freezer.

The meat price is significantly lower than supermarket meat and if you get the right stuff it's better tasting than the butcher shop meat.

Good morning from perfectville. 104 fires today, all this rain sure makes a difference. Fire season runs from April 1 to October 31. The worst season on record had 3990 wildfires in the Province. Maybe with all the money the Government is saving, we will get a tax rebate.LaughLaughLaughLaughLaugh

We do as well. We also have a new full-size, huge actually, fridge in the garage. We got rid of the previous one because once it was just the two of us it just sat running empty. However, with my son's wedding and a month of huge crowds moving through the house, we needed a fridge out in the garage to hold all the food.Sigh Now it is full of beer and wine left over from the wedding, at the rate I drink the stuff it will be there for a long time.

You're not that farmer "who is outstanding in his field" are you?

Speaking of fast food joints in Europe, in Zurich I went into a McDonald's and was absolutely stunned at the prices. It was four times the price than at home. In Venice, I went into a Wendy's and it was worse. A canal-side cafe was much more reasonable and the first thing they would do is put a bottle of wine on your table the way they bring you water here.Big Smile

Bear, that bridge is quite something. I wonder how susceptible it was to fire.

I should state though, that I guess in my case it was “self-inflicted”

I understand, I could be at the airport for 30 hours straight at times. The money was ridiculous and work was the main reason I never got married until I was forty. Always had a gorgeous girlfriend though who shared the same mindset, work hard, play hard. I decided to hang it up and she carried on until retirement, never getting married.

Maybe Lion has given up on the forum because of the hiccups and doesn't even try anymore. I'll drop Assumption Abbey an Email if he doesn't stick his mane in the door soon.

Better go get on the Deere while the Sun is shining as the rains will return soon.

Off to do a few projects. My air conditioning ductwork keeps filling up with condensed water. I have to crawl into the attic, make a slice in the flex-duct and syphon off the water that collects in the low spots. Maybe I need more insulation around the duct? Maybe more ventilation in the attic space?

I feel your pain, John.  I have a wife and two daughters.  McDonalds (and now Buc-ees in the right territory) are sought out.

Mr B, thanks for the info on the beef.  We have an upright freezer like yours and a small chest freezer.  There is a family owned slaughterhouse a couple towns over that sells 1/4-whole cows that I would like to order 1/4 from.  Going to have to start working on my wife on this again.

Well, I got my Father's Day present last night.  My wife has been pushing for a couple years for me to get a Blackstone and I finally did.  She's more excited than I am.  Who's present is this anyway? Laugh  Got it put together last night.  Will get it seasoned tonight.  Then to figure out what I am going to make on it first.  Don't worry, she has plenty of ideas.  Confused

Have a good day guys!

I did see all the praise and compliments before you edited it, Mr. TF, and got such a swelled head that I was unable to enter the Diner to correct the mistake.
I read it on my cell phone, and as my big paws find it hard to reply, was leaving any correction until I was on the computer. I was more concerned that I had given the impression that the bridge was my work.Unfortunately, there was no attribution to the model maker, just a “please don’t touch.”

Totara wood especially its heart timber is hard, straight grained, and with its natural oils, is very resistant to rot. It was used for railway sleepers, house piles, and fence posts.

Like all timber constructions there has to be a fire risk, Batman, but we “touch wood”, generally get just enough rain/moisture to keep the fire risk down. That said we do get extended out door fire bans during the summer months, and while we have a contract for suppling an aircraft for fire patrol, I for one do not mind if we aren’t utilised! (Don’t tell the aircraft owner!!)

Mike, I had to Google Blackstone to see that you have got a good looking, and presumably good cooking BBQ. Have tasty fun. And yes, Health and Safety would throw a fit, these days, but I would have to say, using modern parlance, that the guys using the bridge back then did a more than adequate risk analysis and implemented a robust risk management plan.

What I guess would be a typical TTT Co train that would have crossed the Ongaroto Bridge.

Good morning, everyone.  Bacon, eggs, and coffee please.  It needs to be a take out breakfast.

I'm headed out the door in five minutes.  A busy Friday morning.

At one time, we had a freezer in the basement and we were able to buy a lot of meat for our family.  Now, with both of us old and alone, we don't eat much anymore.  The freezer got sold since it sat mostly empty.  In our small town, the grocery store is only a couple of minutes away, and I go there nearly everyday to get what we need.

Have a great Friday.  I may try to check back in when the Friday morning action cools off.

We actually do side-by-side taste tests between meats.  We have local supermarkets, the local butcher and now 2 quarter-steer places to choose from.  The quarter-steer places come out the best, are the cheapest and the most nutritious.

Water Level Route
My wife has been pushing for a couple years for me to get a Blackstone and I finally did.

Congratulations.  Did you get the 2-8-2 or the 2-8-0?
