BATMAN
I just always thought I was chatting as if you were all here in my living room on a Saturday night watching hockey and drinking my rum.

Hi Brent,

Personally I don't think your posts are too long at all. You are an interesting fellow, and reading about you and your family and your dogs is always enjoyable, just as it would be if I was sitting in your living room or you in mine. The only serious issue I have with you is that you are a rum and coke guy whereas I much prefer rye and coke!Smile, Wink & GrinLaughDrinks

Cheers!!

Dave

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Well......  A Deep Subject!

Weather guessers here in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State are predicting some interesting stuff for tomorrow.......  Winds of 22 to 33 MPH sustained with gusts up to 65 mph over the next 36 hours or so.  Lots of rain and some white stuff mixed in.

There is a large old Maple tree in the front lawn of the house next door....  Hmmmmm....  My Tesla is sitting by my front porch side next to that neighbors house.  It is plugged charging at the moment.  I think I will move the car back to the end of the driveway where, if the tree should come down it won't hit the car.  Of course, it would still hit the house........ (rolleyes).

The power company is warning that there will be large areas with no power.  Glad I have two gas heaters in the house that don't need electric to work.  One is down cellar in the train room and the other is in the living room which was way back before we bought the house just a side porch.  At least I will have heat in the house if power goes off (been there and done that before).

Maybe someone can give me a list of what they don't want to hear about.

DON'T TALK ABOUT TAYLOR SWIFT!

If you want to talk about beautiful snow-covered forests and walking through the woods, go right ahead.  Airplanes, too.  The successes of your children?  Be my guest.  Those are the things the Diner is for.

I for one don't want to hear that a couple of other people have convinced you to curb your enthusiasm here.  Post whatever you want (within forum rules of course) and to the extent you want.  I for one would rather read a lengthy post as I have time as opposed to never have the opportunity to at all.  I also have no issue with multiple photos and/or videos.  Brent, please do not hold back.  Post whatever subject and amount your heart desires.  We all have personal filters we should choose to use rather than complain, unless something is out of line which yours never were.

Time to grab a mutt and do my 10km, it will be slow going in the snow.

Hey Brent!  Good to see your still running!  I just got home from my morning run at HWS College Fieldhouse here,  According to Fitbit I have now totalled 8,225 miles since I started keeping track about 5 years ago.  Even got a nice compliment from one of the coaches I know over there.  He told me as I was leaving that I have an excellent pace for an old 78 year old. (LOL)  I answered him that I can now every once in a while actually lap a doctor who comes over and runs as training for running 5ks.  He came in third last Spring in the last one he ran in his age group.  (That would be the 75 year old and over class.)  BTW, he is 90 years old!!!  There is one other guy in the 90 year old group who also runs over there...  He came in 2nd place in that group in the same race.  I feel good just being able to keep up with those guys!

Hi Everyone,

Just a few words.  Cutting up snowman parts on a cardboard cutout for the granddaughters and cooking up the ground beef Before I have to go into work.  Yes, I'm still working, at least for the time being.  I get ground beef usually 80/20, but sometimes 90/10.  Don't see a whole lot of difference in fat content.  Anyway, I cook it drain it let it cool and separate it into half pound increments and place in freezer.   That makes meals a lot quicker when we're both tired.

Brent:  welcome back.  I wouldn't worry about the length of your posts.  We can either read or ignore, but reading is far more preferable.

Gotta run.

Good to see you back, Brent!  I have missed your humour!

Thanks, Ray.

I will try to keep my post to a few sentences. With AEP528 and Kevin seemingly to always be having problems with my posts and even TF said my posts were pretty long-winded I will do some selective editing. I just always thought I was chatting as if you were all here in my living room on a Saturday night watching hockey and drinking my rum....Guess not. I usually post while sitting here on the phone talking to Lawyers and Accountants and if sitting for an extended period I can see how my post gets long-winded as TF put it.

Anyway, I took my Daughter overseas back to Victoria to University yesterday, it was like a millpond on the water and deathly quiet on deck but for the power of the ferry.

I'll just post one photo.

The dogs are out playing in the snow but the video will put me over my limit.

Maybe someone can give me a list of what they don't want to hear about.

Time to grab a mutt and do my 10km, it will be slow going in the snow.

All the best to all.

John,

I only have 3 brass engines but bought all based on paint quality. The repair guy is really good at his work and quite reasonable too.  He has 40 years experience mostly on Samhongsa products as they did most of the brass for Canadian roads. When I bought my Pacific the seller said it had running issues but I knew John could fix it. He put in a can motor, Tsunami sound decoder with keep alive plus a few detail upgrades such as window glazing, painting the driver rims white, a LED headlight, all for $300. It runs and sounds great. He is a great guy but has some health issues now. I think he is in his late 70's and is one of the few brass repair fellows left here.

Did you get that storm they showed on the news?

Good morning, Charlie.  I think you must have posted just about the time I did, so I didn't read your post until I checked to see if my post was OK.  It sounds like the guy doing work on your brass models is a very good person to know.

Good Morning,

The mild weather is over as the high today will be 7F and a lot colder by the end of the week. About normal for this time of year.

Bear, did you go up in the balloon with your wife and daughter? A balloon ride was in my wife's bucket list but she also specified it be over the Masi Mara in Kenya. Her dream came true on our first trip to Africa in 2007. I share TF's fear of heights so did not book going too but at the last minute decided to go. It was amazing and my phobia didn't kick in at all. I think it was because the basket had high sides. We landed in some tall grass but had to stay very close to the basket as 2 female lions had been spotted nearby. Was glad to see the truck to pick us up.

Well the CP Hudson is back in its case. Did give it a good run but not fast as my 22" radius is its limit. Next I think it is time for the CN Hudson. It runs well but not quite as smooth as the CP engine. The brass expert here said those engines are hard to get to run really well partly due to the 80" drivers. He can due to experience but I suspect most can't and that is the reason they are not uncommon on the resale market even though only 150 were made. Mine ran like crap until he fixed it. Looked good though with great paint.

Time for more coffee and later I have a grocery pickup at 11.

Top of page so coffee for all with a shot of Amarula to make it really good.

Good morning, diners.  Bacon, eggs, and black coffee, Brunhilda.

I got the dog walked this morning before the snow gets too bad.  It's coming down hard today, and more predicted this week.  We'll end up about a foot deep by the time the system moves on.

Bear, those balloon photos are great.  They must have had a great time.  Not something that is on my bucket list.

David, that's great that the elevator has helped your wife.  She (and you) have certainly had more than her share of health problems.  Hope she continues to have good days.

Mike, that is probably every father's greatest worry when kids start driving.  I know that I trusted my daughters' driving, but I sure worried about the other clowns who seem to think they're invincible in their car.  It sounds like your daughter was trained right to be watching ahead in a defensive manner.  Good for her!

I live just a few miles from I-80.  The speed limit near us is 75mph, and the traffic usually moves smoothly along about 80mph.  Being one of the main coast-to-coast highways, the traffic is heavy with steady streams of trucks.  The state police just put out a report that over the past several months, they have stopped hundreds (over a thousand in the past year) going well over 100mph.  They are weaving in and out of 80mph semis and cars.  They are absolutely nuts.  It's a worry when my kids and grandkids visit us, and I know they will be coming and going in that mess.

I'm predicting San Francisco wins the whole thing this year

There aren't too many pro teams that I dislike, but I really hate the Forty-niners.  It goes back to the years that San Francisco and New Orleans were in the same division.  I didn't like their team, I didn't like their owners, and I really didn't like their fans.

MisterBeasley and Dave, the four traps were empty this morning.  I was hoping to end this quickly.  My biggest issue right now is being able to place the traps where the dog won't stick her curious nose and get a painful surprise.

I don't want to head out, but my wife has an important meeting with her doctor and she doesn't want to drive in the snow, so I will take her.  I was hoping the hospital would call and postpone the visit, but I think they want us to keep this appointment.

I hope everyone has a great day today.  Tomorrow -- snowblower day.

I know this isn't tropical, but it sure looks like it.  From the New York Botanical Garden Christmas display:

Good Morning Diners.  Zoe, just coffee please.

My oldest got a good scare on her way back to school last night.  Another driver, who from her description of their driving was probably drunk or high, ran her off the road.  She had to stomp hard on the brakes and veer off onto the shoulder while the other driver rapidly came into her lane.  She said she noticed them coming as they were weaving around cars with apparently reckless abandon.  Thank goodness she was paying attention.  Still she was really shaken up by it (understandably so) when she called to tell us about it.

John, I'm glad the Chiefs won as well, but I fear their time in the playoffs is going to be short lived.  The receiving corps has been atrocious this year.  The Lions got some bad news on the injury front yesterday too, so the two teams I'm rooting for the most probably don't have the best chance of doing well.  I'm predicting San Francisco wins the whole thing this year if they stay healthy.

Happy(?) Monday.

Good morning Diners.  A large coffee please, Chloe.  Good to be back.

Been a while since my last post.   I gave up when I kept getting Forbidden notice.

I have been busy building a new street scene on the layout.  Just a few fiddly bits to finish off.   Then I shall just run trains.

Since the installation of the elevator in the house, Dawn has had more 'good days' than 'bad ones',  so that is a positive.

The coffee is here.  I'll see who drops in.

MisterBeasley
Mice should end up in traps.  I used to get them all the time in my house in Taxachusetts.  The only thing that really worked was the old-style mouse traps, the kind with a wood base and a big metal spring.

Hi Mr. Beasley,

Those spring traps work great when you are around to empty them, but they aren't a whole lot of good in situations like cottages where you could be away for months through the winter season. My chore every spring was to empty the traps that my parents had left set. Handling desicated mice wasn't my idea of fun.

When Dianne and I took over the cottage and we were away from it for the winter, we set up a medium sized pail with a metal rod through the rim. On the metal rod we placed a pop (soda) can with both ends cut out. The can was covered with peanut butter and there was a ramp that allowed the mice to get up to the bar at the rim. We then poured an antifreeze/water mixture 25%/75% about six inches deep into the pail.

The mice would climb up the ramp and onto the bar and across to the pop can. When they tired to get onto the can, the can would roll over and the poor mice would end up in the water/antifreeze mixture. It worked like a charm! The antifreeze served the double purpose of preventing the water from freezing and it also eliminated the odour coming from the contents of the pail.

Emptying the pail in the spring wasn't the most pleasant chore, but the cottage was pretty much free of mice.

Cheers!!

Dave

I baited the traps with peanut butter.

Now, we've got a pair of cats.  I've never seen a mouse here.

Good evening, everyone.  Just some ice cream, Flo.

I had a good day with sports -- both the Saints and the Chiefs won.

Then the action started at our house.  A cupboard got opened and a mouse ran out.  In the thirty years of living in this house, this is the first time (that we know of, anyway) that we've had a mouse.  We have had them in the attached garage before, partly because my wife stores all the bird seed there.  The bird seed is in steel containers, but I'm sure some gets spilled every-so-often.

I put out four traps.  We'll see if we kill one by morning.  My wife is upset we are going to kill it.  It doesn't seem to bother me -- if he'd stayed in the garage where he was supposed to be, there wouldn't be an issue.

Maxman, I'm one of those who has 99% of comments go over my head.  Sorry about that!

Howdy everyone.  Chloe, a bacon cheeseburger please, with a side of onion rings and a cherry Coke.

Had a busier weekend than I had planned.  Helped take the Christmas lights down at church on Saturday, then stuck right with it when we got home and took the lights down off the house as well.  Got the oil changed in both my daughter's cars and got some household chores done too.  (And it's only noon today!)  Wonder what's next...

Last week of the NFL's regular season.  Maybe I'll get to watch something.  Maybe.

Cheers guys!

Dave, Ed, and Bear, you three seemed to have better luck getting into the forum than the rest of us.  Thanks for keeping the diner open over the New Year.  The waitresses appreciated it.

I can’t speak for the others and I’m not sure John, and I’m possibly talking absolute rubbish, but I wonder if I only got through because of the wee small hours when others weren’t trying?

Hope Ulrichs and Petras heath issues are resolved in a satisfactory manner.

Gidday Chloe, a large cold glass of apple cider, please, I feel like celebrating! Having had an engine on order for 12 months and then have it arrive seven weeks late, completely threw out my planned schedule, so apart from having Christmas’s Day off, I’ve not had a day off trying to get the installation all done, and finally the plane flew Thursday afternoon. Hooray!!!

Head on over there and enjoy the topic.  Quite a few others over there seem to find it interesting.

I don't know where "over there" is.  In any case, it wasn't really the topic I wanted to "get into", it was the shorts.  Just another (very) small attempt at humor that most of the straight laced diner patrons don't get.  Guess I shouldn't quit my day job.

EDIT:  Oh, wait a minute.  BRIEF.  Now I get it

When problems became more frequent here, I found myself on another unnamed forum.  That forum also has a "diner".  On that other one, I just checked this morning, and the discussion is about boxer shorts.    No thanks!  I like our "diner" just fine.

A discussion about boxer shorts?

Are you sure they didn't mean boxcar shorts?

If indeed the topic was boxer shorts, doesn't sound that different than some of the topics discussed here.

Besides, boxer shorts sounds like a subject I could "get into".
