I have been in touch with Ulrich again. I am happy to report that they are comfortably settled into their new apartment and they are enjoying it very much. They tried to install an ethanol burning fireplace but it stunk to high heaven so it got the old heave ho. They have replaced it with an electric fireplace which has the option of putting out heat if they so choose. Ulrich has added the sound of a crackling fire and they really enjoy it.

Cheers!!

Dave

Good afternoon Diners.   A bit early for a glass of whisky, but what the heck!  Thanks, Dave.

Edit:   Well that posted okay.    Getting 403 is soooo maddening.

Next month.   Happy with whatever is chosen.  I cannot contribute most of the time.

Stay Safe Everyone.

Good Morning Diners.  Chloe, coffee and a raspberry danish please.

John, you inspired us yesterday morning.  Bacon and eggs were served up for breakfast.  It was great.

hon30critter
we need to choose a theme for May. Brent suggested doing roundhouses and turntables which sounds very interesting to me. What do you think?

I thought we had agreed to that already.  I like the idea.

Spent the weekend's spare time working on our stairs to the upstairs of the house.  A couple weeks ago I had stripped the carpet off and have been working towards putting new treads and risers on, over the existing ones.  The existing treads were plain 'ol 2x lumber and were luckily spaced right such that placing the new treads on top will straighten out most of the spacing issues that existed (uneven stair heights at the top and bottom).  I think I have one old 1-1/2" tread that needs to come out, get replaced by a shimmed up 3/4" piece, and new finished tread put over top.  The old hand cut stair stringers were not exactly cut level on the first step down from the top.  The other steps that are off I can shim the new treads easily enough, but this one is too far off.  Besides, replacing the 1-1/2" base with a shimmed 3/4" piece will not only keep it consistent height-wise with the rest of the stairs, but will bring a short final step at the landing much closer, height wise, with the rest of the steps.  Winner!  I wonder why I'm so sore today? Laugh

Have a good Monday everyone.

Mike

We had eggs this morning, but no bacon!  Sad  We were away for a week, and the butcher shop is closed on Sundays for the winter.  Gotta go get bacon today.  Breakfast without bacon is like a day without sunshine,  which today also is.

This could be a place I would put on my bucket list! It looks like it would be a thoroughly enjoyable weekend:

Continuing to go through my friend's collection.

I won't bore you guys with all the insane treasures he had.

I did find this unit of 4th edtion Black Orcs he painted. They look good, and I will re-base them to use in my Orcs & Goblins army.

I will like having one of his units in my favorite army.

Also... there was this...

A FIRST EDITION Warhammer boxed set from 1982. He never once mentioned to me that he owned one of these.

What a surprise.

Good morning, everyone.  Bacon, eggs, and coffee, please.

We had a good time visiting some of the grandchildren.  I don't like having to drive that far to see them.

I think my daughters can sense my wife and I are getting older.  They are making more and more efforts to see us and visit.  Not that they didn't in the past, but it seems they are making more efforts to check on us and see us.  I think they are realizing that as we age, they can't assume we will always be around.

I had to laugh about it on the last trip together.  Years ago when traveling, I made sure the daughters had their tickets in their hands, knew which gates to go to, etc.  On the past several trips, my daughters have all made sure I had my ticket information, which gates to go to, etc.  Roles have changed.

MisterBeasley
On the way, we saw something I thought was only a memory, an operating Stuckey's shop.  I remember those dotting the highways and byways of the Southeast when I was a kid, before everyone flew south for vacation.   I thought they were all long gone, but here was one on Route 17 in Southern Virginia.

MisterBeasley -- great memories of Stuckey's.  They always had such a great collection of trinkets and souvenirs.  We loved it when my father decided to get gas at a Stuckey's.  I understand that the original owner's son has tried to revive some of the places.  On our last trip, we saw three original Stuckey's buildings, all abandoned or used for someone's storage.  Too bad.

Not much else going on here.  I hope everyone has a great day.

Only two days until I head to the HMGS convention and try to sell all of this stuff.

I can't wait to get rid of all this... my house looks like an episode of Hoarders right now. I actually have needed to make pathways to walk through.

Hi Everyone,

Brunhilde, coffee with cream, please.

This is in the FYI/FWIW dept.  Stucky's founder's granddaughter, a woman in her 50's named Stephanie, gave up her law practice and took over the Stucky's brand and all other assets and is trying to revitalize the company.  She posts every so often on LinkedIn.  I think when she took over there were only maybe 3 stores and a small warehouse.  She has since rebuilt the pecan log roll production and I think she's opening new stores, but I'm not certain on that.  I doubt that it'll ever be as big as it was and will probably concentrate on slow sustained growth, but I definitely laud her efforts.  Who knows, you may someday see pecan log rolls in your supermarket.

Less is more,...more or less!

Thanks for that information.  I had heard something like that, but misremembered who was doing it.  I hope she can have some success.  I think she will face much more competition at modern Interstate interchanges than the original stores did.  Often they were the only gas station/convenience store at many stops.

I remember Stuckey's from a long time ago, in the days before the extensive Interstate system we have now.  We stopped at some and skipped others.  Even then, I preferred a burger or hot dog over pastries and candies.  I remember seeing the signs more than the stores themselves.

Like the old Howard Johnson restaurants,  many places have succumbed to the need for speed.  Fill the tank, empty your own tank, grab a burger and go.  No one wants to take a half hour for a sit-down meal at a rest stop, or stand around while the wife shops for trinkets.

Maybe the time it takes to recharge your EV will change that? Things seem to go in cycles.

Good Evening,

Today I finished the pond cleanup, installed the waterfall pump and now have the sound of water in the yard for the next 6 months. Hard to believe that we have had the pond for 28 years this July. Hopefully we will get warblers next week. They are attracted to the sound of the waterfall.

Got the tax forms signed and back to the accountant. I stopped doing my own taxes after dealing with my mother's estate.  Both my wife and I will get a refund which is always good news.

I have been in touch with the fence guy as we can't delay it any longer. Have found we can get cedar this year but the price hasn't come down much. Will have to see if it will fit in the budget. Will be another month before any construction can begin as the ground is still frozen.

Roundhouses sounds great for next month. My earlist RR memory is going to the CN roundhouse in Transcona when I was about 3. My grandfather took me. He was with CN police so had access everywhere.

Not much new here, weatherr is still cool but did hit 50F today.

What a CLASSIC!  The origin spelled out, but a reprisal from the original poster hereYes

Ive always admired that one.  Seem to recall, the loads got heavier through time, so the bridge had to be made stronger, without tearing it downBow

Sure wish we could do that EdLaugh

Also, always liked them in multi-span, even if they don't quite fit into the whole picture.  Especially in the Ozark Mountains.

And there's always a Diner on the road, no matter how far spread out we are, just as long as one knows who their friends areSmile, Wink & Grin

My vote is for round houses and bridges, cuz no matter what you do, you have to cross over a bridge, to come to a roundhouse.

Just a little note my Freind Charlie.  The least you could do is not bring up taxes in the serenity of the Forum here.

Some of us don't get money back, but pay in.  The last thing wanted to hear around here is TAXES, that has to do with the INFERNAL REVENUE SERVICE!

Thanks for your consideration on this subject in the future, cuz I've always liked you, but taxes gives me the willies really badTongue Tied...Laugh

Speaking of Canadian Pacific....

https://youtube.com/watch?v=KeQm7tmsxMo&feature=share

This looks like it will be primarily a North-South route through the US.  The CP is an East-West line through all of Canada, or at least most of it.  Canadian National picked up the Soo Line and Wisconsin Central in the US so this helps CP compete.

Good morning

Got back to restoring decks and railings in the cool crisp mornings.  It seems that waiting for warmer weather, might take too long.  It's always nice to have something to do, but looks like I'll have to put the modeling mat away for a while.

The Duck hasn't been back for a few days.  The wildlife rehabilitator got back to me, and she asked if he was able to fly.  By the look of his wings, I've been assuming so, and then after talking to her about it, he came in for a crash landing the last time he stopped by.

I'm pretty sure ducks can't do a hover landing thing.  Seeing him tumble across the lawn comming in from a line drive fly in, was quite pathetic.

The poor thing.  Sure wish one of these volunteers would quit screwing around, and grab a net to come help him out, before he brakes something else.

Have a great daySmile

Good Morning,

Supposed to rain this afternoon but that is ok with me.

TF, sorry to upset you, I won't mention that topic again.

We had a racoon get into our garage which wasn't hard as it was a carport we put a door on so it is open to the back yard. Anyway he had managed to get into the lockers in there as a nice place to spend his daytime hours before his nocturnal romps. I removed his pathway but he tried anyway this morning at 6:15 when I went outside to put up the bird feeders. Saw him fall off the roof rafters as he found he isn't a sloth. The roof is flat so it wasn't a long drop. Just checked and he appears to be gone. I checked under the car too. They are persistent so will leave the car outside tonight.

Brent, did you buy the 2-10-2?  John is a very nice guy and CP is the road he models so he has great knowledge of their steam and is always happy to chat. If you do buy, get him to do the decoder install as he really does a nice job for a very reasonable cost.

I want to do a little cleanup out front before it rains. The graders got a lot of sand on the grass by the curb and I need to get it into the gutter as the street cleaning has started. The city can have their sand back.
