Treats Are On Me

How about a cold can of Caramel Flavored Coffee Coke to start the day?

Good morning everyone. Chloe, please bring me three pancakes with butter, and REAL maple syrup like you can get in Ohio please.

It is Easter. I guess we have given up on all traditions, and we are going to have tacos for dinner tonight. I can't wait.

Happy Easter everyone! My aunt's funeral went well yesterday. Afterwards I went out to a pizza place/bar with one of my brothers and a few cousins for a couple drinks and lots of catching up. Was good for my soul.

Have a wonderful day everyone!

Good afternoon Diners.   Flo.   I'll try that coffee coke, Kevin has left please.

Locomotive 5699  'Galatea'   having been saved from Dai Woodham's Scrap Yard in Barry,  South Wales,  now can be seen running on BR track.    Many times she has a change of name and number to represent other  'Jubilee  Class'  locomotives?

Happy Easter!  We're having spit-roasted lamb cooked outside on the Big Green Egg.  Everything the GF has ever done in the Egg has been spectacular and this will be no exception.  She cooks over charcoal, while I use gas.

One of our teenage cashiers was arrested today for pilfering over $750.00 from the til a little at a time. Walked out of the store in handcuffs on Easter.

Dumb kid. He had his whole future looking bright.

Good Morning,

Spring has finally arrived, supposed to hit 50F today. The snow is melting and at this rate will be mostly gone in a week or so.

Took wife to dentist on Sat to get the crown fitted but he wasn't happy with the fit so is sending it back to the lab this week. We will be going back next Sat, hopefully it will be right. Sure is great of him to come in early on his day off.

Well the check engine light is on again. It had gone off for a couple of weeks. Car is running fine but will have to take it in. The computer stores the fault codes.

There is a K5a Hudson for sale on ebay. It is from a run done by BLI that was commisioned by Hobbycraft Canada in 2005. They are brass and beautiful plus have sound. Bids start at 750US. Don't think I'll be buying even though it is the only one of this run I have seen for sale in 5 years of looking. Mine from Samhongsa was made in 1978 and has just as good detail plus was a lot less. Paint is nearly as good too.

Time for another coffee while I wait for the snow to melt.

When I was working in the Sears store in Chatham, Ontario many years ago we had a staff member who was extremely competent, intelligent, and drop dead beautiful. She got caught stealing cash and was fired. I saw her a few months later and she had aged a hundred years. She was obviously a drug addict and she was dressed like a biker babe. What an incredible waste. I won't say what I would have liked to have done to the animals who got her hooked on drugs.

It still upsets me.

Cheers!!

One of my father's employees at his men's store was going to be promoted to manager.  At the same time, he had applied to the county police.  They gave him a lie detector test, which he failed and my uncle was a cop at the time.

I used to hang out with him at his place and as he was a couple years older than I and we watched the Orioles game and drank beer after work.

He would take new clothes, put them in the trash dumpster.  After work he would drive around the shopping center and retrieve his booty.  I felt totally deceived and crushed.

One of the prettiest girls I ever saw worked as a phamacy tech in the hospital.  Remember Vargas cartoons in Playboy?  She looked like one of those women, clothes a bit too tight or too short.  She got fired for stealing Demerol.  What a waste.

I'm fascinated by machinery, especially anything that can lift 500,000 lbs! This was a nice look at the workings of this Missabe Road wrecker, the X-7:

Kevin will appreciate the sound of that Cummins Diesel Cool

Enjoy the video with your coffee and donut.

Busy busy busy at work.  It's hectic, but makes the time go fast.  Hope everyone is doing well.

Enjoyed the hook video.

Would have been interesting to see how they deployed the out riggers.

Also, there were a couple shots where they showed some sort of nozzle directed toward the cable drums.  Wonder what the purpose of that is.

While looking at the hook video I came across another about different types of prototype couplers and how they work;

Hi Everyone,

Brunhilda, coffee with cream, please.

John(York1):  it is certainly no crime if you don't listen to music.  Why spend time on something that you don't find all that interesting.  Besides, there's enough of us around who have entire scores going on in our heads continually.

Ed:  I'm glad you liked the N&W wood hopper that I posted last month.  That hopper was released as a 1 in 5000 kit by Ambroid about 60 years ago.  The kit was way beyond my skill level at the time (probably still is), but I still have it somewhere around the house.  If I find it I can send you a copy of the plans so you could build your own fleet of them.  Oddly enough, I'd suggest building in styrene and add more weight.  I don't think wood is heavy enough to keep it on the rails.  If i find the plans I'll send you a pm to find out where to send it to If you'd be interested.

I never worked with anyone that was stealing from the company that I know of.  It was probably going on under my nose and I was just oblivious to it.

Brent:  Once we took the BC Ferry from Victoria to Vancouver.  It looked exactly like the pictures you posted.  Cloudy and kind of gloomy looking.

I'll check back in soon.

Less is more,...more or less!

I love ferry rides. For me, the most impressive ones were in 1996, when we went to Newfoundland for summer vacation (my then-girlfriend-now-wife was a postdoc in Montreal at that time). One ride was 7 hours (New Sydney, Nova Scotia, to Port Aux Basques, Newfoundland), the other 16 hours (Argentia, Newfoundland, to North Sydney, NS). As an avid birdwatcher, I spent nearly all the time with binoculars on the front deck, and I was rewarded with two "lifers", a Manx shearwater and a Leach's storm-petrel.

I wonder if that might be to blow out any rainwater that might get on the wire rope to prevent the wet cable from rusting on the drum? I remember working with an outfit that replaced elevator cables in the plant I once w**ed in and they used a pressure sleeve to force lubricant into the cavity between the wraps of wire strands. If rain water soaked the rope on the drum and didn't dry out it could casuse nasty corrosion. Just a guess. Do you have a specific point in the vid where you saw the nozzles? I couldn't quite locate it.

Ed I really liked that video too.  I was surprised how poor the operator's visibility was, without hanging out of the crane.

Oddly I wondered about the cables rusting.  The car sits outside and I am sure, back in the day when there was a wreck, it had to go rain or shine.

I have a Tichy (Gould?) steam crane I still have to build.  I even have B&O decals for it.

Thanks for that drawing, Maxman Yes I'll file it away for a 'hopeful' day when I might tackle such a project.

That slightly bent pipe with the union? When he shows the drums from the front you can barely see where it connects to a hose then goes further below. Maybe it has something to do with a cylinder that unlocks the slewing gear? I wonder who has an operator's manual?

Some 'big hooks' didn't get the same TLC as the Messabi X-7.
