This looks like it will be primarily a North-South route through the US. The CP is an East-West line through all of Canada, or at least most of it. Canadian National picked up the Soo Line and Wisconsin Central in the US so this helps CP compete.

Some of us don't get money back, but pay in. The last thing wanted to hear around here is TAXES, that has to do with the INFERNAL REVENUE SERVICE!

Today I finished the pond cleanup, installed the waterfall pump and now have the sound of water in the yard for the next 6 months. Hard to believe that we have had the pond for 28 years this July. Hopefully we will get warblers next week. They are attracted to the sound of the waterfall.
I have been in touch with the fence guy as we can't delay it any longer. Have found we can get cedar this year but the price hasn't come down much. Will have to see if it will fit in the budget. Will be another month before any construction can begin as the ground is still frozen.
Roundhouses sounds great for next month. My earlist RR memory is going to the CN roundhouse in Transcona when I was about 3. My grandfather took me. He was with CN police so had access everywhere.
Not much new here, weatherr is still cool but did hit 50F today.

I remember Stuckey's from a long time ago, in the days before the extensive Interstate system we have now. We stopped at some and skipped others. Even then, I preferred a burger or hot dog over pastries and candies. I remember seeing the signs more than the stores themselves.
Like the old Howard Johnson restaurants, many places have succumbed to the need for speed. Fill the tank, empty your own tank, grab a burger and go. No one wants to take a half hour for a sit-down meal at a rest stop, or stand around while the wife shops for trinkets.

Thanks for that information. I had heard something like that, but misremembered who was doing it. I hope she can have some success. I think she will face much more competition at modern Interstate interchanges than the original stores did. Often they were the only gas station/convenience store at many stops.

This is in the FYI/FWIW dept. Stucky's founder's granddaughter, a woman in her 50's named Stephanie, gave up her law practice and took over the Stucky's brand and all other assets and is trying to revitalize the company. She posts every so often on LinkedIn. I think when she took over there were only maybe 3 stores and a small warehouse. She has since rebuilt the pecan log roll production and I think she's opening new stores, but I'm not certain on that. I doubt that it'll ever be as big as it was and will probably concentrate on slow sustained growth, but I definitely laud her efforts. Who knows, you may someday see pecan log rolls in your supermarket.
Only two days until I head to the HMGS convention and try to sell all of this stuff.

We had a good time visiting some of the grandchildren. I don't like having to drive that far to see them.
I think my daughters can sense my wife and I are getting older. They are making more and more efforts to see us and visit. Not that they didn't in the past, but it seems they are making more efforts to check on us and see us. I think they are realizing that as we age, they can't assume we will always be around.
I had to laugh about it on the last trip together. Years ago when traveling, I made sure the daughters had their tickets in their hands, knew which gates to go to, etc. On the past several trips, my daughters have all made sure I had my ticket information, which gates to go to, etc. Roles have changed.
MisterBeasleyOn the way, we saw something I thought was only a memory, an operating Stuckey's shop. I remember those dotting the highways and byways of the Southeast when I was a kid, before everyone flew south for vacation. I thought they were all long gone, but here was one on Route 17 in Southern Virginia.
MisterBeasley -- great memories of Stuckey's. They always had such a great collection of trinkets and souvenirs. We loved it when my father decided to get gas at a Stuckey's. I understand that the original owner's son has tried to revive some of the places. On our last trip, we saw three original Stuckey's buildings, all abandoned or used for someone's storage. Too bad.

We had eggs this morning, but no bacon! We were away for a week, and the butcher shop is closed on Sundays for the winter. Gotta go get bacon today. Breakfast without bacon is like a day without sunshine, which today also is.

Spent the weekend's spare time working on our stairs to the upstairs of the house. A couple weeks ago I had stripped the carpet off and have been working towards putting new treads and risers on, over the existing ones. The existing treads were plain 'ol 2x lumber and were luckily spaced right such that placing the new treads on top will straighten out most of the spacing issues that existed (uneven stair heights at the top and bottom). I think I have one old 1-1/2" tread that needs to come out, get replaced by a shimmed up 3/4" piece, and new finished tread put over top. The old hand cut stair stringers were not exactly cut level on the first step down from the top. The other steps that are off I can shim the new treads easily enough, but this one is too far off. Besides, replacing the 1-1/2" base with a shimmed 3/4" piece will not only keep it consistent height-wise with the rest of the stairs, but will bring a short final step at the landing much closer, height wise, with the rest of the steps. Winner! I wonder why I'm so sore today?

I have been in touch with Ulrich again. I am happy to report that they are comfortably settled into their new apartment and they are enjoying it very much. They tried to install an ethanol burning fireplace but it stunk to high heaven so it got the old heave ho. They have replaced it with an electric fireplace which has the option of putting out heat if they so choose. Ulrich has added the sound of a crackling fire and they really enjoy it.

Another cool day here but supposed to warm up by Tues.
Brent, John Morris is the guy who serviced my 3 brass engines. He is an absolute wizard with brass. If you buy from him it will run great and be fairly priced. He installed decoders in my brass, just motor for the 2 Hudsons plus LED headlights. The cost including a tune up was very reasonable. For my Pacific he re-motored with a can motor and installed a Tsunami sound decoder with a keepalive. It runs great. I would love to see his cabinet as he has 80 brass engines but due to covid I couldn't go in his house.

BATMANI could not believe the number of charging stations everywhere. Even in the most out-of-way dirt pullovers in the most remote areas there would be charging stations. Every rest stop had banks of them.
Yep! Canada is ahead of the game! For me to drive out to see you folks (and someday I hope to), I would have to cross into Canada at Chicago!
