Hello everyone!
Most of us are one month closer to better weather. I can hardly wait.
We are going to go with Brent's suggested them of "Locomotive/railway paint schemes and logos. Changes, one-offs and oddballs, and how they have evolved over the years" for the month of February. It should be fun!
Cheers!!
Dave
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
Canadian Pacific is my favourite rr. The older maroon and grey schemes aren't exactly flashy, but I do find them attractive:
The newer red schemes have a little more pizzazz. I love the 'Pac Man' element:
CP has done their share of veterans' themes:
Their steamers were pretty attractive too:
Hi Everyone,
Hey, we can't have Dave by himself in the diner. This sounds like an interesting month's topic. I got the brake lines glued on the 2 bay ACF hopper I mentioned last month. I made one bend too long and it looks a little bad, but I'm too lazy to take it off and try to straighten it and re-bend it. It will be kinda hidden anyway. How does that sound for an excuse? I did learn what not to do, though. My first effort was to glue one end into the reservoir and think I could bend it to shape with one end anchored. Didn't quite work. Pictures will be posted later.

Thank you for setting up the February Diner Dave.
I will have a lot less to contribute this month, but I am looking forward to what everyone else will be sharing.

Living the dream.
up831Hey, we can't have Dave by himself in the diner.
I'm sure there will be lots of contributions! I expect to see some green and white, and maybe some yellow and red pretty soon.
How about a Holstein locomotive?
This one looks like they had some leftover paint to use up!
I think this one got painted by the Easter Bunny:
I think this was done for the bi-centenial:
How's this. A farm big enough to have its own locomotive!
This one looks pretty bland until you study the side of the cab and the lettering:
More to follow.
This isn't something that you want to see every day, but at least no lives were lost and no-one was seriously injured. Note that the narrator mentions that they backed up 1/2 mile to take the third run at the drift.
There is a long pause before the video actually starts. Go forward to about the 22 second mark:

Good morning everyone. I hope Chloe gets here soon with that bowl of Rasin Bran and black coffee.
I wish I knew what I did a couple of weeks ago that has made me feeling so good in the mornings. If I could nail it down, I would keep it up forever.
Well... I need to get to soffit installation, then work again. Today is my "Friday", so I will see how much soffit I can get installed in the next couple of days.
Good morning, everybody! It's been a while. Busy busy busy, you know how it is. Anyway, today I brought donuts.
Why? It's a special day. We're starting construction on next year's project layout today. It's a Free-Mo module designed by yours truly. You can watch us all day on the MR workshop webcam. Don't quote me on this, but I believe it's free to watch today! https://www.trains.com/vid/webcam/workshop-webcam/
(Though as I watch right now, the webcam is showing me recordings from yesterday, when I was drawing the track plan on the plywood. Very surreal feeling. Who is that guy? He looks just like me! If I run to the workshop right now, can I tell yesterday-me today's lotto numbers?)
EDIT: I'm told the live feed starts at 9:30 Central time. See you then!

Good afternoon Diners. A mug of Assam tea and a donut, Steve has kindly left please, Brunhilda.
Dave Thanks for starting February's Loco paint schemes and logos etc.

Steve: Look forward to watching the Free Mo build. I hope that MR will take the module on the road, so to speak, so that it can be a part of a larger Free Mo layout. Would love to have it at the Garden City, KS train show next year (hint, hint).
No easy way to say this; we have been spent the last three weekends in Texas visiting my ailing Mom. She was placed into hospice last Thursday, and passed away on Monday. She was 87; and was married for 65 years to my Dad. Funeral is this weekend.
My condolences to you and your family, Tin Can.
Thanks for the flawless Diner move, Dave! And donuts, too! Thanks Steven. Mine is that "fudge" topped custard filled beauty.

PA-2 GE More Power to America by Edmund, on Flickr
Ge had run a More Power To America special train back in 1950 and had these PA-2s painted for the occasion. After the tour which was pretty much a traveling trade show, they were sold to the P&LE. The ten passenger cars, IIRC, went to the Rock Island.

Good morning, everyone. A new month -- same old breakfast -- bacon, eggs, and coffee. You can't improve on perfection. However, Steve's donuts look good, and it's not even Sunday.
Dave, thanks for inviting us along on the new month's diner journey. Neat photos.

TinCan, sorry to read of your mother's death. I hope the funeral and family time this weekend go well -- we'll be thinking of you.
After paying first of the month bills, I will spend my day correcting a layout mistake I made yesterday. I spent a good amount of time putting in some lights at a diesel shop. Then, moving a diesel through, noticed that the lights are too close to the sides and the locomotive hit them. I really thought I had made enough room allowance, but it didn't work out that way.
This looks to be a fun month of pictures.

Tin Can IINo easy way to say this; we have been spent the last three weekends in Texas visiting my ailing Mom. She was placed into hospice last Thursday, and passed away on Monday.
Hi Tin Can II,
I'm sorry to hear about your mom's passing. That is one part of life that we all have to go through, but that doesn't make it any easier.
Good day all.
Tin Can, I'm sorry to hear about your mother. Thoughts and prayers headed your way.
John (York1), it's funny you should post that picture. I just read yesterday afternoon that the Texas Mexican Railway was the origin of our phrase "Tex-Mex" that today refers to a type of cuisine. Weird how stuff like that works out.
Steve, I'll have to take my donut to go, but thank you! Now to just nab the glazed one in the corner there...
Take care everybody.
Mike
Tin Can II, Deepest sympathy to you and yours! Know that you are in our thoughts and prayers at this time.

Not exactly one of a kind (there was two A units and an E7B unit painted in Century green) but worthy of note in the Diner just the same:

At the time the NYC also tried solid black and dark gray. The dark gray won out of course.
Sorry for your loss Tin Can.

Not quite to my liking but I guess it was a hit with the daisy-pickers
Brunhilda, a glass of Pinot Noir, please.
Tin Can: Condolences on the loss of your Mom. Losing a loved one is always a tough one. Cherish the memories.
Dave (North Brit): that cartoon is hilarious.
Ed: The picture proves there's a prototype for everything. Some years ago there was a static model of a Hudson loco available that had Chessie System decals. There was a lot of flak because the Chessie didn't exist during the steam era. Well, not so fast....
Has anyone had trouble loading photos onto Flickr lately? For some unknown reason, I can't seem to load any in.

Thirty-seven years ago today my first wife died of a cerebal hemorrhage. What a wake-up call! I had two young boys and two foster kids to look after at the time. Amazing sometimes what life throws at you. Her sister is stopping by for a visit later today. I'm sure we'll talk about old times. Sandi was only 27 and in the prime of her life. I look back over the years and think about how that experience has made me stronger and more aware of the fragile thread that ties us all together.
I hope everyone has a great Groundhog Day!

Condolance to Tin Can.
I will not tell you what else came up when I Googled "Cat and Nine Tails"
Wasn't quite what I was looking for.
Good morning everyone. I am off work today and tomorrow, so I am going to be working on the soffit as much as possible.
I hope I get a lot done.
gmpullmanThat experience has made me stronger and more aware of the fragile thread that ties us all together.
When I was in my early 40s, a co-worker of mine died who was the same age as me. He had two young sons. He was very healthy, obsessed with living as long as possible. He collapsed one day at work. He found out he had brain cancer and passed away in less than three weeks.
That was the first time someone I knew that was the same age as me passed from a cause other than an accident or crime.
That made me very aware of the fragile thread.
Steven OtteGood morning, everybody! It's been a while. Busy busy busy, you know how it is. Anyway, today I brought donuts.
Thanks for the goodies Steve!
Don't be a stranger.
Good Morning,
Another frosty day here, -23F with a windchill of -47 but it will "warm up" later when the sun rises a little higher. I hear this weather is headed out Ray's way. I plan on staying in except for brief forays to feed the birds.
I have a sound only decoder that I mounted under the layout. It is a MRC unit that has a 539T file. I reset it yesterday and will program it today with the address of the S3. On my little layout it is a satisfactory solution without spending any money.
David, I liked the safari photo. From the logo on the Land Cruiser, I think it is an and Beyond Safaris vehicle. We have travelled with them several times. My guess is it was taken in South Africa from the terrain and lack of roof or doors on the vehicle. Lions will use vehicles for cover when stalking. We have experinced that.
Time for more coffee.
