I really enjoy coming across a photo like this especially with the resolution that it was uploaded in.

So, there's a War on and this Mike is sidelined? It is an H-5g and only six years old? Stack and turbo are covered, front of cab is boarded up. The air pump governor is missing ("borrowing" locomotive parts has been going on for a long time!) this isn't the sand tower but a coaling dock.
Collinwood had a huge concrete coaling structure. I'm looking into when that was built (1944 but I believe a little earlier) as locomotives wouldn't be stored on what appears to be a functioning, active coaling dock.
It IS possible that these engines are being laid-up or "mothballed" and there is still some coal in their tenders. Laborers would hand shovel it out and it would be used in other locos. So they would only be here for as long as it takes to perform that task.
This is about the time the USRA H-6 Mikados began showing up so maybe there was a brief surplus on hand. Many of the H-5s lasted through the mid-1930s.

It sure has been quiet in the Diner today. It looks like the waitresses all went home.

Living the dream.
Good morning, diners.
It's going to be a long day. We drove home last night, finishing the drive about 1:30 a.m. That would be OK since I thought I could sleep in. Daisy the Dachshund had other ideas, and she got up and got me up at 6:30 a.m. Now she's sound asleep and I'm wide awake.
It's good to see the grandchildren again, but it's also good to get home and sleep in my own bed. It rained here while we are gone, and the yard is showing it.
This shortline RR in Idaho has a neat name: the Bountiful Grain and Craig Mountain RR. It operates on about 160 miles of track. I haven't really searched, but I don't know what the origin of the name is. I thought it was interesting.
Hope everyone has a good Sunday. I'm going to try to take a nap.

Good morning
It got stormy last night a little too much to go eat at the Shanty so we ordered in Chinese. Good thing we didn't go picnic at Bush Lake as it was definitely out of the question.
I guess a twister ripped through Lakeville and Apple Valley and worked its way up through Inver Grove Heights and West Saint Paul. They're sending a helicopter up this morning to check out the damage, I guess it was pretty bad. Judy said she heard 82,000 are without power this morning.
We needed the rain but it came and hit pretty hard.

I cannot afford the luxury of a negative thought
I dropped into my old train club on Saturday morning. My purpose was to drop off some freight cars and other train bits, and to retrieve my cable stapler gun which the club no longer needs. I gave them a 20 car set of UP covered hoppers, a five car set of Milwakee Way horizontal ribbed 40' freight car kits, 20 or so Peco and Atlas switch motors, a new double action Paasche air brush and a whole bunch of LED strips.
They have done a lot of scenery work since I last visited, some of which is good, and some of which is not so good. I didn't point out the not so good stuff. The club is short of storage space so unfortunately the areas below the layout are stuffed full of unorganized boxes that desperately need to be sorted, labeled, and at least stacked nicely. It made the clubhouse look like a pigsty.
I was very disappointed. I'm not sure if I will become active again. I'd have a hard time keeping my mouth shut.
Cheers!!
Dave
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
up831September 1st will be Thursday. The plan was to do grain operations in Kansas to include RR ops in the KC area. Great! But, with the trouble I'm having to post a picture I don't feel comfortable to start the thread.
Hi Jim and Ed,
I'd be quite happy to let you take over moving the Diner, with Ed's assistance if needed.
We had agreed to go to Kansas even though the harvest is past its peak (I think).
Perhaps if you were to tell us what device(s) and method(s) you are using to try to post pictures, we might be able to help you out.
Home from work. Had left over steak and baked potatoes for dinner.
I have enough tacos to last me the rest of the week.
My wife is leaving for Seattle tomorrow to spend a lot of time with our grandbaby. So, I will be working hard on the house while she is away.
up831I can try, but I'm not sure at all that it will work. So, if someone wants, they can start it in any location they want and we can do grain ops another day if one so desires.
I can take care of the setup and posting of the RIP track. Dave has been hosting for the last few months, time to give him a break.

TF's Trackside Diner tonight
Oh oh, the Hamburglar is frozen. I guess it's chicken tonight for the picnic basket Yogi.
Good evening
Got in a well-deserved nap. Now we're going over to Bush Lake to do some grilling over the Kingsford.
Judy said we're grilling chicken but it smokes and takes too long. I could have sworn we got some Hamburglar at the grocery store yesterday.
I don't feel like chicken tonight, so Hamburglar it is.
That's a beautiful maroon Rio Grande Douglas, but I think Lake Erie's F7's or F3's have the best looking noses.
I could go for a burger!
From Wikipedia:
The Huntsville and Madison County Railroad Authority (reporting mark HMCR) was created in 1984 to operate on 13.25 miles (21.32 km) of track that was abandoned by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad.
The line was originally constructed by the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway and this portion of the railway ran from Huntsville to Attalla, Alabama (near Gadsden). A ferry ran the train down the Tennessee River between Incline (near Hobbs Island) and Gunters Landing (at Guntersville). The NC&StL later became part of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. The HMCR now operates the line between downtown Huntsville and the community of Norton. The tracks between Norton and Incline have been abandoned and in sections, have been removed completely. The Alabama and Tennessee River Railway operates the line south of Guntersville. The ferry service has been abandoned.
In early 2015, the railroad began utilizing General Electric locomotives, and retired the EMD switchers historically in use. In early 2017, HMCR rostered one U23B, one B23-7, and three B39-8E locomotives. Primary traffic consists of various plastics and other chemicals, a marked shift from brick, lumber, sand, and aggregates primarily handled in the past. Publicly available audited financials indicate the operation is in good financial condition.

My living room
A place I know I can find my friends to share stories and have a few laughs.
My other living room is boring but a good place to unwind before I hit the rack.
Do you have just one living room? You don't necessarily need to have two but it seems to be much more funner...
Good afternoon
My youngest Grandson Carter is still in high school playing football. His feelings went a little bit by the wayside when my son Jeremy bought Anthony a new Jeep before he went to college. So he bought Carter a new Jeep too being that he is starting and finishing his senior year this year.
Carter knows I like Trains and had a friend install a horn in his Jeep with a button by the steering wheel. He was so excited to show it to me and I laughed my butt off. I'm still like a little kid too because I couldn't quit pushing the button
One can get into trouble using those as they are highly illegal, but I know my Carter is too smart to get into trouble with that.
Lunch Time!

We anticipate our Black Diamond watermelon every Fall at our favorite Farmers Market.
Of course I threw a few more of them in the back of the truck for other people. I feel like I'm running around town with bowling balls rolling around on the floor now.
The orange crush hybrid watermelon started last year but they were sold out. Those homemade beef sticks on top are nothing to sneeze about either as they are more delicious than anything you can buy at the store.
Help yourself, grab a watermelon and a beef stick, there's more in the brown bag on the seat.

My Sons coming down to go to the Fair. Couldn't find him a hotel room as Judy's hotel is sold out and all the other Hiltons in the surrounding area.
He stopped near Fargo last night to visit his Son at college and spend the night. My Grandson has his own apartment this year, too much commotion in the dorm for his studies.
We might have to park Jeremy 25 minutes next door in Hudson or Stillwater.
It seems every one and his brother is coming to town fer the Fair. Me, ... I want no part of it this year. Never was too keen on big crowds and liking that scenario a little less every year.
Good morning everyone.
Chloe, please bring me a couple of bananas and a large black coffee to start this day off well.
I did not sleep well last night. I kept on waking up about every hour or so. I don't know why. I feel good, and nothing hurts. That is a good condition.
I have been looking at camera accessories to set up a video booth and make model build videos for YouTube. I could set up a studio at my desk pretty easily. The equipment is a lot more compact than just a few years ago.
There is a company called SmallRig that has all kinds of interesting gizmos.

hon30critterI have decided to visit my old train club again. I have been absent for a couple of years, although I still pay my membership dues. I won't go into the reasons for my departure. Let's just say that the situation wasn't tenable for me.
I split from Scale Rails of Southwest Florida thirty years ago, in 1992. I am a charter member of the club, I joined when I was just 14 years old.
I have never gone into the reasons for the departure in this forum.
When I left, everything in the club was terrible. They have since pulled it all together, bought their own building, and the HO layout was featured in Great Model Railroads (Kalmbach).
I used to go to the annual shows, see old friends, and catch up. I have popped into the clubhouse from time to time.
Never have I felt the urge to join back again.
Good early morning
It was like a day at night when the clouds rolled across the sky out from my stoop
The Thunder spoke its voice and a glance of lightning shined across my face

I have decided to visit my old train club again. I have been absent for a couple of years, although I still pay my membership dues. I won't go into the reasons for my departure. Let's just say that the situation wasn't tenable for me.
When I parted from the club their financial situation was a bit tenuous because Covid had prevented them from running their annual show and sale for two years and the bank balance was getting a bit thin. The show basically paid the rent with some additional funds left over for layout development.
Their financial situation has totally reversed itself thanks to their decision to solicit donations of train collections. The response has been quite amazing! The club has been able to put thousands of dollars in the bank by selling the donations so their future is secure. If there are any clubs out there that are struggling financially, getting into the used train business might be the answer. Mind you, it does take some time and effort.
I'll let you know how it goes.
I am going to hit the shower, then try to figure out the Wordle, and then head off to bed for the evening.
I did not get out of bed until 2:00 in the afternoon today, now ten hours later, I want to go back to bed.
Nothing is stopping me from doing exactly that.
What a wonderful life.
And who could forget Joe if any for 3 minutes of the last 50 years?
