I stand corrected Bear.  I knew who they both were when chatting with them of course, but would confuse the two with both members having Cedar in their Forum names when I was off line.

They were both fine gentleman and interesting to talk to.  Rob (Cedarstrand) was having a tough haul with chemotherapy at that time.  There was a lot of support with prayers here.

Cedarwoodron lived out of state but grew up in the same neighborhood as I did and still had family here.  There is a Cedarwood Street in St Louis Park so I guess that makes sense.  He told me the Cedar Lake Bridge was rebuilt the 4th or 5th time over the tracks and was designed as a Railroad History site.

I went down there the very next day and spent the better part of the late morning reading all the history of the Great Northern Railway that used to occupy that area.

The photos posted on the wall looked like an afterthought but we're quite interesting.  I wondered if a resident of the area perhaps printed and posted them there.  Photo 1 shows the original Cedar Lake Bridge and photo 2 shows a tall bluff that is no longer there anymore.  I grew up about two miles from this area during the Burlington Northern merger and those old pictures sure looked completely different back then.  They were fascinating to look at.  I've been meaning to go back down there and see if they Incorporated those pictures into a more permanent fixture.

This is the U36B Seaboard Coast Line, Spirit of 76 diesel my Grandfather gave me for my 11th birthday.  I've managed to keep it all these years and sits on my fireplace mantel.

Happy Lent...

This is a FAST day so the LION went out looking for some fast food. Dinner

Last night was Fat Tuesday.  The GF is still not quite presentable, so we were looking for some sort of Mardi Gras take-out.  The best we could come up with was ribs from a local BBQ place.

I always thought is was odd that my Mom wanted to observe Lent.  She was Swedish and we were Lutheran at the time.  She always asked what I, as a pre-teen, was giving up for Lent.  She was glad I was giving up chewing gum.  I don't think she ever caught on that I never chewed gum, any time of the year.

We have to write out our "Bona Opera" and give it to the Abbot prior to Lent. I guess it proves that we are thinking about Lent, and it prevents monks from biting off more than they can really do.

I wrote:

"I Could say that I would give up snacks, Yet I might fail in this."

The live of a monk is supposed to be a "Continous Lent" and so that does not really leave a lot to give up. But Lent is not about giving up, it is about moving forward in one's life of prayer.

The new pantry is finally installed. I was really happy that we had the same installer who did the kitchen in 2009. His work is amazing!

Here is the old broom closet come pantry. I didn't take a picture of the inside but it was ugly!

Old pantry removed:

Bulkhead, walls and floor repaired. Of course I forgot to protect the new floor so we (Dianne) had some cleaning to do. She was not impressed!:

New pantry. We couldn't match the colour to the other cabinets but it is close enough:

Now we have to fill it and clean the entire house. We put up dust barriers on the kitchen doorways but there is a thin coating of dust everywhere despite our efforts to control it.Grumpy Actually, we don't have to do the dusting. The maid service will be here on Friday to go over the whole house. We are going to pay them double the usual rate because every single place where dust could settle, it has!

Time to change the furnace filter.

Cheers!!

Dave

TF, thanks for the King Cake!  I'll bet your wife misses the fun.

Hi John

My Bad!  My response a day late and a dollar shortWhistling

You're so very welcome and Oh but she does!  Judy really misses Carnival time down there.  The last time we were both down there for fun was the Millennium 2000 and that one was Really a Hoot!

That's when we got the Endymion 2000 numbered print.  Uncle Butchie was lucky enough to get the Bacchus one that we wanted as well but being very popular, that one was sold out.  That was over twenty years ago and still hanging on the wall.  Where does the time go John?

We went down there some years after to help Judy's brother move to Wisconsin. We basically handled everything because he had a bad back injury and can't lift a thing.  Most all of her family moved after Katrina but a few of them still live down there.

We were long since overdue for a visit and we're planning on going before the corona hit and spoiled it.  Just waiting for the right time now and I have to agree with you that the food is spectacular down there.

I enjoyed looking at your pictures and I'll have to dig some out to post sometime.

Hello, diners.  It's time for some after-dinner coffee.

TF, that's neat Endymion stuff!  That is one of the most fun events.  Our pastor was a member of the Krewe of Endymion, so it was always fun to watch.  Endymion came right by our school, so we had some good places to watch.

Lion, I used to give up something for Lent, but I haven't done that for several years.

Dave, that's a nice kitchen addition.  You'll wonder how you ever got along without it.

Actually, Edison made experiments with mobile telegraphy many years before. His ideas were the beginnings of the ADT company. Edison also invented an electronic vote counter... little did he know Zip it!

So, I wonder how many kids these days can recognize the sound of a teletype machine? When was the last time you heard one working? They used to be all over on the railroads. I still have the teletype pages from the last trains recorded out of Cleveland Union Terminal on "Amtrak Day 1". At GE we had rooms with acoustic tile on the walls and cork floors to reduce the noise of the machines.

Regards, Ed

Water Level Route

I had a horrible dream last night that woke me up about 2:30 am.  Didn't get much sleep after that.

At least it's hump day!

I had one of those toss and turn nights where all I got was Junk Sleep last night as well.  I hate when that happens Mike.

I'm thinking there'll be better sleep tonight cuz I'm really tired and there's only four and a half hours left of Hump DayYeah

Here is another video by the same chap, Mike Armstrong, who filmed TF's freight train video. This time it shows the Florida Brightline passenger train in operation. The colours certainly are bright!:

Thank you.

Interesting they choose to use a war bonnet paint scheme and passenger cars instead of a more Florida RR scheme with reefer cars.

Good Evening,

Lion, nice photo of a Thompson's Gazelle. Saw lots of them in Afrca but they are more Cheetah prey as they are very fast.

Not much new here. I went on a grocery run today. That is the extent of my excitement. Still cold here, about 3F today.  I think we are in for a late spring which means the snow until the end of April.

Watching a NCIS re-run as I type this.

Got a nice cheque in the mail from RR stuff I sold at the LHS. It was mostly N scale stuff but I did sell  my HO rotary snowplow.

Hi John,

We love it already. We filled it this afternoon. We were able to keep similar items together, but it will take some refining to get it right. We pretty much filled all the trays. That presents a bit of a challenge because we are out of stock on a few items so when we buy those items, we may have to rethink what we will keep in the pantry and what will go to the basement storage area.

Thanks for your interest,

Dave

Hi Everyone,

Florida was a good call.  I'd almost forgotten what a palm tree looks like.

Dave:  I like your pantry cabinet.  I think you were smart to get roll out trays for it.  I believe you'll find if you haven't already that those roll outs will make things easier and way more convenient.  It also gives your pantry area more continuity with the rest of the kitchen.

Ed:  I've seen plenty of PFE and ART reefers, but I'd never seen a Tropicana reefer.  Are those pretty much an East coast thing?

We've been having beautiful weather the last couple of days.  I think it even got over 50 F.

Less is more,...more or less!

There is no graffiti on the Tropicana reefers. How do they avoid it, or is it simply that those reefers are brand new?

Good morning Diners.   A coffee on the go please, Flo.

It's been a few difficult days here with Dawn not well.  Not only has she difficulty with walking because of Novichok nerve agent,  now her arms are hurting when she moves them.   Just another battle that will be won.

The pictures of Florida sunshine are great.  They brighten up the dark, wet scene I see through the window.

I'll try to be back later.

Junk Sleep!!! You’re not the only one that hates it, Mr.TF!!!!!

My problem is that knowing I’ve a BIG day of W**k ahead, is that I get angry with myself not being able to get back to sleep!! This is, of course, most counterproductive as the angrier I get, the less likely I’m gong to get back to sleep!!!! Bang Head Angry Bang HeadBang Head

Sleeping comfortably, for long, after I’ve managed to give my back a tweak, is another matter.Sigh

It's been a few difficult days here with Dawn not well.

I'm sorry to hear this David.  I certainly hope this latest setback passes quickly.

Well, we've started looking for a first car for my oldest daughter.  What a miserable time to look for one.  Especially for a 17 year old kid with a 17 year old's budget.  She has a fair bit of money saved up, but knows she is going to need money for college as well.  My job is to find something in her price range that will be reliable for her.  Not an easy task these days.

Have a good day guys.

Good morning

LaughLaughLiked the Beartoon Bear.  I know exactly how that is living in tomorrow before tomorrow comes.  When you're trying to get to sleep that certainly isn't any fun.  Nights like that, the harder I try to get to sleep, the worse it gets.  Finally got some good Quality Sleep last night.  Felt so energized jumping out of bed this morning, it was like Daffy Duck bouncing off the walls on the way to the coffee potLaugh

I like the new Pantry Dave.  Certainly better than the old closet door one.  The new one looks like it's always been there like it shouldYes

Long TrainsStick out tongue  Yep, ...I counted 147 cars on one of those.  I enjoy Mike Armstrong's videos and checked out your passenger train one.  His studio quality filming and sound is quite decent.

Actually you're not too far off Lion.  Our condo has limited space so one needs to get creative.

Our Pan-Tree is right above the stove.  Judy is too short to reach the pans so I feel like a Cherry Picker when I get one down for herLaugh

Have a wonderful day gentlemanWink

Probably for the reason that there is no graffitti on the New York City Subway.

The paint is likely to be such as the stuff just washes off. Maybe they have a wash rack at their terminal. They have to inspect and refuel all of those coolers, they may as well have a wash rack and make the job complete.
