Who's Going To the Amherst Show?

It's less than 2 weeks away.  Who plans to be there?

I wish the Amherst folks and their exhibitors all success but in my personal opinion this is not the time to be jammed inside with others.  I am hoping the Omicron pandemic dangers are going to be decreased enough in a month to attend the Madison (WI) show (which is very nice but nowhere near Amherst in size or scope) but I am not counting on it.

I'll be there both days. Really missed it last year. It will be worth the trip, even though a few exhibitors (Rapido, Atlas, Scenic Express) appear to be missing.

As of this past weekend, The city of W. Springfield, MA does not have a mask mandate. However, the show itself is recommending everyone wear masks (This information came from the show director via email this weekend). We'll be exhibiting this wear and our crew will all be wearing masks. I hope others coming to the show will do the same.

Atlas supposedly pulled out of all shows this year. Rapido I assume has border issues, and from what I remember, Scenic Express moved their company out west.

I knew they should have renamed the "Effective Publicity Work" thread, which more or less covers the Amherst show.
I plan to attempt, I have no issues wearing masks (living in NY, its requried for public venues), and have been vaccinated (unfortunately I'm scheduled to get the booster in early February, so I'll try not to get jammed in any crowds  - the last show I went to...well, the last live show...was in 2020, and crowding wasn't really bad except for the lunch lines).
Link to exhibitor list as of the 15th here. Perusing that list, looks like nealknows is correct, I see neither Atlas nor Rapidio listed  Atlas not being around kind of sucks, but Rapidio, although their models are nice to look at, really doesn't offer much I could use.

Rapido comes from Canada, and no Canadian vendors are able to attend.

I am not going and I've been to every show since 1991.

The South Shore Model Railway Club is not going.

The New Haven Railroad Historical & Technical Association is not going.

Rapido's problem isn't getting to the show, it's getting home that's the issue.  You have to have a test within a certain number of hours before you can cross the border into Canada.  And the way the lines for testing are here in Massachusetts, the odds of getting a test in time to make the trip back to Canada are not good.

Wish I could be there, but between covid and a recent surgery, I'm not up to it and don't feel it would be a smart thing to do. We'll probably have a reduced presence with some of our friends manning the City Classics tables.

Too far away and weather can be an issue for those who travel the distance.  Haven't been there since I moved further away.

No, I won't be there.  I'm avoiding crowded places, and besides, I've moved to Delaware (although I can't change my profile) and it's a longer trip than I used  to have.  The GF hates the cold, so a trip with her to this show in winter is out of the question.

Years ago, when PMs used to work, I exchanged cell phone numbers with a few forum members and we met up at the show.  I can't do that anymore, either.  Maybe some of you can.

Apparently ticket sales are thru the roof.  Hopefully it wan't be a COVID super spreader event.

When I first went back about 20 years ago, I started in the Better Living Center, then went across to Mallory, then to Young and on to Stroh.

If you go to the show website, you can download the list of who will be at the show as well as look at a map of all four buildings. Come up with a plan who you want to see and then go from there...

Good luck and enjoy the show!

Yup, I have been working on an itinerary. Can you see everything in one day? Or should I plan on going both days?

Thanks,

In past shows I have seen everything I wanted to see in one day (sometimes with time to spare). As I mentioned in threads of years past, I honed my skill in efficently navigating large expos in the old turn of the century PC Expos at the Javits Center (those were cool and informative, plus there was also a incentive to get more free baubles from the exhibiters than your fellow co-workers who also went - this doesn't seem to apply at Amherst).
I have more or less planned out what I want to visit and look for going back 4 or so shows, and know what I can wail by quickly (stuff like 3-rail O guage I have no real interest in beyond a 'that's nice', so I pass by that quickly. Oddly I liked looking at a vendor in the Stroh building that always had a nice selection of Plasticville buildings (O guage) - I have no need for them, and the prices were "collectibles" high, but I thought them interesting to look at.
One minor bit of advice, which has been relevant for the 6 shows I've visisted, and may still be relevant this year - if you are going to eat lunch in the Young Building cafetria which I normally do, get there before 11:00AM or so when the lines start getting out-the-door long.

If you're only interested in one scale, plus the modular layouts, one day should do it. I'm in HO scale, so when I was walking the show, I went to the manufacturers first, then scoured the tables with HO trains for sale and while doing that, stopped to look at the layouts.

Good luck and enjoy the show!

One very important suggestion; wear comfortable shoes.  You'll be walking on concrete floors and your feet and legs will let you know.
