I'm curious. Do you use the whiskey to get up the courage to eat the porridge, or is it just there to hide the taste and consistency?
My mother's family was from Sheffield, and when they moved to Canada just after WWI they brought their porridge recipe with them. As a child I was routinely subjected to the abuse of having the grey stogey stuff forced upon me! I hated it! I couldn't understand the attraction of eating something akin to freshly mixed lumpy plaster. No amount of brown sugar piled on it would conceal the truth! My mom would say "...this will stick to your ribs...." as though there was some perceived health benefit related to the fact that the stuff would get stuck inside your body. As a child, the thought gave me the creeps!

Had Christmas with my family this weekend. As usual, it was over all too quickly. My Mom tries so hard to keep everyone entertained with games and such. It's fun, but sure does make the time fly.
Bought a programming track booster to try to help reading CV's on already programmed locos. Planned on hooking it up yesterday, but ran out of motivation. Had to go pick up groceries last night and upon returning home found that a bottle of lemon juice (A big one. Quart?) had been turned upside down when they loaded the stuff in the car and half of it had leaked out on the short ride home. That was a fun discovery that took a while to clean up. That on top of a number of items they claimed they were out of, and I think it's time I go back to regularly shopping in store. So much easier to adjust plans and look for alternatives when you are shopping in person. Now I just have to find time to go.

I'll have a coffee and a blueberry bagel with cream cheese please Zoe Not too much to report. My COVID test came back negative so that's good and the rest of the Christmas lights are up at the house. I did a couple of revisions to what we normally do just because it's a new house and the norm didn't quite look as good as we wanted. CFO even bought a big wreath for the wall next to the front door and put lights in it. Some of the neighbors have nothing up and some of them must have their own power plant to run them. We should fit right in the middle of all that.
Shop is still bustling and the crew for the R-8 is in today so that will be a bunch of extra as a lot of it has to come apart for repair after the shunt at Sebring. Busy, busy, so I gotta run. Hope things are well with the rest of you. I'll try to catch up later. Ciao, J.R.

I keep Bing in my good stack of Christmas music Ed.
I decided to listen to him over coffee this morning. White Christmas is one of my favorites of my Christmas collection. I like to sing along to that one to get into the spirit of things. My Grandmother used to compliment me on my baritone voice. Ain't like Bings of coarse. I was reading how Bing Crosby gave Ol' Sinatra a run for his money competition wise in the documentary that John posted Saturday.
Well, I finished carving rocks in the area where my timber trestle is going this weekend. It was fun and I was pleased how it turned out but I decided it took way too long. This area of the layout is probably 1/50th of the rocks I have to do. Don't need that portion of my modeling to take the rest of my life. I will need to find another method to my madness
I'm going to connect the timber trestle to the Warren pony truss bridge today. I need to make a custom steel bent for the transition between bridges. I went to the hobby store and got all the styrene I needed Friday so that's out of the way.
Tomorrow I will start setting the 30 footing tubes for the timber ends so the trestle is removable. The 48 legs over the lake will not need them, ...Thank Goodness!, they will just float. Wayne showed me how to make bridges removable a couple years ago. Quite a neat system.
I hope to keep on track as I made a winter layout schedule this year to try and get Trains rolling here. Time for another coffee.

I bet that roast beef of 07 Christmas at your place was good. We used to always host Christmas in Prior Lake. One year we did a rib roast Now it's nicer to go elsewhere, kick back and let them do the work

It appears that I will be doing two types of Scotch Eggs. Dianne has stated firmly (pun intended) that she does not want eggs with any liquid in the yolk! That means two separate batches, one soft (hopefully) and the other hard. That's okay. I only have to make a few.
After two years off due to covid, the firefighters really knocked it out of the park this year. This train is in Stanley Park in Vancouver. Stanley Park is 1000 acres of land donated to the city by the same guy that donated the Stanley Cup.

Good afternoon, everyone. It's a great Sunday afternoon here, with bright sunlight, snow on the ground, and the KC Chiefs ahead 28 - 0 against the Raiders. I'm always cheering for anyone who plays against the Raiders.
My in-laws in Kentucky had help cutting the damaged trees, and they finally got the power on at their house.
After living through several New Orleans hurricanes (the storms, not the drinks!), I will put in a plug for the Salvation Army. It seemed the Red Cross was on the TV news, but it was the Salvation Army that was on the frontlines, handing out food, ice, blankets, clothes, etc. I have been impressed with them ever since. I'm sure they are working hard in the tornado areas.

Good morning from a cold slightly snowy West Coast.
I missed out on the scotch eggs! I kept seeing them through the window as I passed the diner but did not have time to come in and snag a few, they sure looked good.
Got up at 0500hrs on Friday and got a lot done with the wife in the Captain's chair of the truck. We finally got out to cut down a tree. We ended up driving up to a tree farm in the mountains and went way back on some really gnarly roads sinking up to the running boards on the truck in the muck but did not get stuck. We cut down the wife's choice of tree and had to carry it back some three hundred metres to the truck in the cold pouring rain, it was a lot of fun for us two old fogies. There was not a soul there just us.
There is a major Christmas tree shortage on the West Coast because the highways are still closed and we are still mostly cut off from the rest of the country and trees are not a priority right now. But if you know where to go there are plenty for the cutting.
After getting the tree and running a bunch of errands for the "older" geezers we watch out for, I had to head into Vancouver for a hockey-related event having to do with getting programs back up and running around the greater Vancouver area, post covid, which does not seem to be here yet. I got home around midnight after a none stop 19hr day. I can tell I am not getting any younger.
Those storms in the U.S. are heartbreaking, I feel so sorry for all affected. I hope Ken is okay as well as Garry's family.
The storms keep rolling in off the Pacific and it is getting a little unnerving as the intensity has really ramped up this year. Even the weather guessers are saying it has become hard to forecast as patterns and direction are changing so fast as they roll in. Vancouver even had a tornado a few weeks back that caused some damage. The West Coast doesn't get tornados, but I guess we do now.
Ed, I like the lights on that B&O car, very cool.
I am really enjoying all things Christmasy everyone is posting, David, those layouts are so cool, gets me in the mood.
Today it is trains, guitar, the Grey Cup (Canadas Superbowl), and the Canucks to finish off. No bike, just coffee with trains and guitar, and then rum with football and hockey. We are also having a bunch of friends over so it should be fun. The wife is out buying a big prime rib and she will cook up a feast as she always loves to do.
Can I stand the strain?

On one journey we were at Dunfermline, Scotland, and at the works canteen we were delivering to I had my first Scotch eggs. I have loved them ever since and have them when I can.

So you don't think that there was a rush on the Scotch Eggs eh! Seems to me that there were a lot of takers! Dianne and I used to do two dozen Scotch Eggs for her family's Christmas parties and I don't recall having a lot of leftovers, and those were the ones with the hard boiled yolks!
Regardless, I have been inspired to do Scotch Eggs for the Festivities, and I'm going to try to do them with the runny yolks. The biggest challenge will be finding small eggs. No matter. If I can't find small eggs the larger ones will just have to do!
I'm not sure if it has been the Christmas puddings that I made, or the thought of Scotch Eggs, or maybe just the Christmas train layouts that David posted, but I'm firmly in the mood for celebrating the Holidays!

Yes I am ok it was a wild night, Just South of me was the extensive damange from the tornados This one tornado went through 4 states as an ef4 or 5 over 210 mile track. It wiped most of the Small town of Mayfield away, Areas up near Garry's was affected as well. I have another friend up there who has had majoe damage to his house. He stated that there are other houses that are just gone. I think the track may have missed Garry's but I have no way of knowing for sure. It is really bad in the areas affected. Other areas have no power due to to a large transmission line getting blown down. I am currenty at my Southern command in Mississippi, as we had a trip planned before this happened. I ask that you pray for those affected, if you feel led to donate please do so.
It was 68 degrees F here in Delaware today. Not sunny, but I'll take it.
I was out a couple of days ago and saw some Train Ride and train show signs. Wrong day, but I followed them anyway. Today, the right day, I went to check it out. It was a local layout visit. It was a pretty large basement HO scale like, based on the Pennsylvania and Reading Railroads. Apparently, the local train shop maintains a list of layout shows and their schedules. I'll check out more of these.

What devastation the tornadoes have wrought through the central part of the U.S.. I know they passed close to where Cuda Ken lives and perhaps near Garry's place? I sure hope everyone is OK. The wind is gusting to around 50 mph here. Could get worse.
Tonight we are meeting for our Holiday dinner with my two sons and their extended families. Missed it last year, of course. My younger son requested a "more Christmasy" restaurant than the last one so we're going to a Inn/Taverne (note the e) where the cheapest entree is $40. Hope the kids like it

NorthBrit Dave, I did a little digging and that trolley is located in Illinois. It is a 2 foot guage line built as a hobby by a fellow who has now passed on. It wasn't open to the public. It was called Rock River Valley Traction.
Dave, you sure are right about searing a roast at high temp. The last Christmas we had here was back in '07 and my wife did a roast beef that went inro the oven for a short time at 500 degrees. Sure did smoke but wow was it good with a wine reduction sauce.
No big plans for today.

We are going to the nearest grandchildren tonight -- about 100 miles away. By then the roads will be cleared.

I'm going to give one more snow storm another try. I did see a lot of other trucks fishtailing out there and a lot of people that shouldn't have been out in the ditch. It might have been one of those times when the temperature and moisture conditions were just so.
My tires were starting to look like frogskins last spring and I knew it was time. My buddy Erv knows the junkyard owner down by his house and told me a Durango was sideswiped. The rims and tires didn't get damaged and were almost like new. I got a steal on them, all four for 425.
If the tires do not perform better in the next snow storm, I have a buddy that owns a tire shop. I'll just make these rims and tires my summer running equipment. Big Mark gives me the F&F (friends and family) deal at his shop so flipping wheels out isn't a big deal.
The sound of Aggressor tires rambling down the highway don't bother me a bit. Kinda like the Grrr Grrr Grrr of a Diesel, ..."Manly yes, but I like it too" !...

TF, how aggresive of a tire are you going for? On my last truck I had Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac on there and they were incredible. Handled ice as well as any tire can and would go through ridiculous amounts of snow with zero issues. On the flip side, there was some road noise and on the highway you had to actively steer more than other tires. Just put a set of BF Goodrich All Terrain TA/KO2's on my current truck and so far they are very similar in performance to the Duratrac, although we haven't had deep snow for me to try yet. My current truck had Goodyear Wrangler HT's prior and while the tread lasted forever, they had poor traction in just about any condition. My previous truck, before I put the Duratracs on, I put on a set of Firestone Destination AT's and they were horrible. I'll never put another set of Firestone's on a truck again. If you want something less aggressive looking (also likely quieter on the road), try either Cooper Discoverer AT3's or Yokohama Geolandar ATG015's.
Finally got a snow storm yesterday, Winter is here! Didn't stop me driving around for Judy's errand day. It never ceases to amaze me how Minnesotans forget how to drive in the snow. Or never learned in the first place.
I think some of the better drivers are probably the ones that whipped fish tales in the parking lot when they were young. Remember doing that, it was fun wasn't it? Those are the drivers that know how to react instinctively when a slide occurs. If one has to think about it when it happens, it's too late, ...Those are typically the drivers that are in the ditch.
Any of you gentlemen pleased with a good all season tire that's good in the snow you would recommend? I don't know if it was one of those situations where all the conditions were just perfectly wrong, but I was not impressed with my tires I got last spring.
