Well, I watched New Years' celebrations in Auckland 8 hours ago so I guess they don't count. It is 2022 in Guam but I guess some U.S. citizens don't recognize them as a U.S. territory.Grumpy

Does Hawaii count? If Guam doesn't, we should have to wait for Hawaii.

Sorry but the Milwaukee area is in the Central Standard time zone so you will have to wait!

Thanks, Rick. I see that now... Must have happened right when I clicked the Submit button Bang Head

Dave said he was going to be away at midnight. I guess a couple hours makes it a big deal.

Good morning diners.  Heading to the in-laws today for new years eve snacks and watching the football game today.  Should be fun.

My wife is on a mission to get the Xmas decorations down before we have to head back to work on Monday.  I get it, but I do enjoy having the decor up through New Years Day.  Oh well.  You win some you lose some.

Had a nice Christmas, but no train stuff this year.  Guess I wasn't specific enough with my list.  That's okay.  I've had plenty to work on without getting new stuff.

Have a fun and safe new years eve everyone, or in the case of Bear, Happy New Year!

Hey Kevin, sorry about spilling the news about your grandkid before you had the chance

No problem at all. After you posted that my email inbox filled with notes of congratulations. Thanks everyone. This is a great group.

Yes!    I have had Forbidden 403 a number of times and have given up trying to post what I really wanted to

I wonder if anyone can offer some intelligence about what causes us to get 403 sometimes. There must be a trigger for it.

It is irritating.

Good morning from the West Coast where it is -8c and dark and clear with lots of stars out.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO BEAR!!!!!! I was watching the fireworks in Aukland three hours ago as I could not sleep.

I also keep getting the forbidden 403 notice, I am starting to go to other places on social media as this one requires too much patience and time just to post even a simple message sometimes.Sigh

I gave myself a bit of a break on the exercise routine over Christmas and I am up 3lbs and my blood pressure is also up. Booze and chocolate will do it every time. Junk food is not in my nature. Back on the bike today instead of next week like I had planned and back to healthy eating.

An elderly friend of ours FB messaged yesterday and said she had fallen in her yard and hurt herself. She could not get a cell signal but had WiFi out in the yard. It was -8c and she had gone out to take a photo in her slippers and housecoat. We are two hours away and she lives quite remotely. We immediately called 911 and emergency services got to her as quick as they could through the two feet of snow into her property. Turns out she has a broken leg and was obviously suffering from exposure and will be in hospital for some time. I think they flew her out but have not heard the details yet. She has two of my wife's dogs so we need to go get them and bring them home. It could be a bit of an adventure getting to her place today.

I spent a long time at the in-laws shoveling snow off their driveway yesterday, they really need to give up the house as even the easier task are going undone such as laundry and house cleaning. They have four kids and my wife and I are the only ones who lift a finger to help them out or keep an eye on them.

Better go plug in the truck, hop on the bike and then head NE into the wilds to retrieve some retrievers.

All the best to all.

Good Morning,

A frosty -27F with a -49F windchill this morning. I was out putting up the birdfeeders and it was nippy.

Another New Years Eve has rolled around. Hope 2022 is better than 2021.

It is a multi coffee morning.

A Coke for The Bear!

Well, it’s 1621 hours, and 79°F on New Years Eve, and I’ve just finished w**k, so yes please.Drinks Thumbs UpThumbs Up I’ve got a tall glass filled with ice and Coke, beside me as I write this.

Keeping with the Christmas theme, I came across this NZR poster from 1932, a little different, not sure what the artist was taking, or whether he should have been taking something?!

You could be excused in thinking that Scrooge or the Grinch had something to do with this particular poster…

REC by Bear, on Flickr

…but, to put it into context, this poster came out from 1940 to 45. “There’s a war on, you know”!

And in the holiday mode, here’s one from the late 40s depicting the “village”.

North landscape wall...

In progress:

All done:

I reeally wanted this DL&W Caboose to be the standard model for my SGRR, but I never saw them come up for sale. I eventually settled on the GM&O caboose I use instead, and I collected ten of them.

By the price these things command, I think I made the right decision.

Good morning from the White West Coast where it is -8c. I was out at 0500hrs for a walk with the dogs in the snow. It was so quiet I felt like I was the only one on the planet. We got a foot of snow overnight, I think a long walk through the forest is on the agenda for today.

Took the wife into Vancouver last night, dumped her at the hospital for her MRI, and went to Stanley Park and sat and watched the city for an hour or so until I got the call that she was almost done. The snow was just starting as I picked her up and the ride home was with very little traffic. Six lanes hardly saw another car.

Just got a call from the in-laws, I think we need to go see what is up with them as they are both up in their eighties and are needing a lot more assistance these days. It may be time to sell the house and look at a seniors community for them, there are a lot of really nice brand new ones not far from here. That means 30 minutes.

All the best to all.

Good morning Diners.  A busy day ahead

A busy day for me too. Starting off with a trip to the supply store for all kinds of stuff, then home to bury that stuff.

It will be a day of digging.

Gidday Chloe, a cold beer for Ken and a large juicy meaty bone for Dirk, please.

I’ve been enjoying the railroad posters that Ed’s retrieving from the archives. I like the art work, and am assuming that the great variety comes from the fact that there was great competition between various American railroads on various routes and in the latter years, they were trying to combat the rise of air transport.

I suspect that the lack of NZ railway posters is to do with there was no competition, apart from the Wellington & Manawatu Railway Company, which operated successfully from 1881 until it was bought out by the New Zealand Government Railways from 1908.

However, while we’re still in holiday mode, here’s another one circa 1940…

I’m afraid though that I’ve haven’t had the time to do David’s videos justice, just that I’d like to thank him for his efforts as well.

Ken's back!

Dirk needs to console Toby who had a gum biopsy today.  He's walking around tonight moaning and groaning.  They took an xray and did not see any invasion into the jaw so they are leaning toward it being just gum hyperplasia.  Pathology will take a week.

Started working on the railroad again.  Where I cut the modules apart to move them, the flextrack that was laid between them sprung slightly so there was now a kink.  I also had to rework an S-curve.

I found my flux and my small heat shrink, but there are still things that are MIA.
