hon30critter Heartland Division CB&Q Question .... How do we define "home" ? ... I lived in several states is why I ask. Hi Garry, I don't think that we need to restrict 'home' to where you are living now. If you have called several places 'home' then I think you are free to post comments about any of those places. In fact, I encourage you to do so. It will add more interesting information to the Diner. Cheers!! Dave

Hi Garry,
I don't think that we need to restrict 'home' to where you are living now. If you have called several places 'home' then I think you are free to post comments about any of those places. In fact, I encourage you to do so. It will add more interesting information to the Diner.

It will probably be an interesting month if everyone participates ! ...... For me it is TX, TN, MO, IL, CO, MI, and KY. Most of my childhood was in IL, and most of my adult years are MI and KY.
Everybody.... Have a good day.

We'll get there sooner or later!
Well... since we're on the subject, how about one with a train? From Wolfe:
"Perhaps this is our strange and haunting paradox here in America -- that we are fixed and certain only when we are in movement. At any rate, that is how it seemed to young George Webber, who was never so assured of his purpose as when he was going somewhere on a train. And he never had the sense of home so much as when he felt he was going there." "All that he knew was that the years flow by like water, and that one day men come home again." "You Can't Go Home Again."

Good morning from a slightly cooler left side. It is 6c/11f cooler than yesterday at this time.
The wife went to Costco and I put a large cooler in the highlander with lots of ice packs for the cold stuff, normally we would never need to do that.
The boss has been in close contact with a lot of local vets and the Animal Emergency Hospital and the number of pets that have died in this heat is staggering. Only 40% of homes have A/C here and pets have been just collapsing dead in the homes or yards.
Another increased cause of animal fatalities is Xylitol poisoning. These always go up in the better weather for some reason. Pets are not people so don't feed them people food from the table. Giving them a frozen sweet people treat because it is hot is not being nice.

The agricultural industry has been slammed with massive crop destruction everywhere. The power grid just over the border in Washington State is falling to pieces, we have a lot of friends that live there, some on farms and they are in a tough spot. The Province still has plenty of power and is exporting vast amounts South but the Washington infrastructure is failing in the heat.
Our local emergency dept fire/ambulance usually averages 14 medical calls a day yesterday they had 280.
We moved from Winnipeg when I was 2 and I have lived in three places within an hour of Vancouver since then. I am not crazy about where I live now as far as location as I prefer to live nearer the mountains where there are many more rivers and lakes a short walk out the front door. I can open the door here and walk out with the dogs and go for hours through the forest without seeing a soul which is perfect, there is not a lot of (inviting) water around though. Not like where I grew up. But like they say home is where you hang your hat and have a layout.
We could swim, fish, and play hockey here in the winter. Living in the farm belt isn't quite the same. At least I live on the edge of a forest.
We have these cooler blankets for all the dogs, you soak them in cold water and they lay on them and wear them, they stay cold for a long time.
I put out a bunch of big Tupperware chest size containers and smaller trays full of water in the front yard for all the wildlife as the small stream across the street in the forest is dry. We set up a camera and are getting lots of visitors in the night. The water levels in them are down a lot in the morning.

You are good people!
I just delivered two more boxes (6 years worth) of National Geographics to the local library. The tesla said it was 101°F outside. National weather service says it is only 93°F..... It feels like the Tesla is likely the closest to being correct... (whew!) Thermometer in the shade on my porch also says 101°F........
Good (HOT!) afternoon all.
Zoe - A great big RBF please. Thanks.
Weather - 92F curently, with a "feels like" of 102F. Bit warm for my blood...
Kevin - Glad you made it home safely from your travels. Thanks for all the neat pics!
Next Month's Diner - I really like that idea. I will have a few to share.
Trains - Was working on a locomotive and placed it on a test track to check the programming adjustment. Somehow, I programmed the lights wrong, and the only working lights were the front ditch lights... Yet I was not working on that CV set???
A Decoder reset got the lights back, but now I need to (again) speed match her to her siblings, as well as adjust the sound levels to where they sound good in the layout room. (Easy enough, just fire up DecoderPro and copy the Speed tables from her sister units she runs with.)
Seems the Last Microsoft Windows update does not like my DCC Programmer having an "Unsigned" driver.... Took me an hour of fighting to finally get it back online.... Microsoft has "forced dummy mode" to "prevent mishaps" but that creates issues with 3rd party equipment, like a DCC Programmer...
Layout room remodel - Waiting on some lumber price drops before continuing, and the furnace guy will be here tomorrow for the other remodel project we have going currently, to hang the garage furnace, and scope out how to best replace the whole house furnace, and add central air with the new furnace. So little progress on the layout room, and no layout progress at all for now.
Glad TF is only absent from his ongoing internet issues.
What is this "Cable Internet" you referred too? I have two choices - Cell signal WIFI box, or Satellite. Satellite service is overpriced, slow, and data capped. Cell signal WIFI is quicker, but more prone to "throttling" than it should be. (Verizon does offer unlimited Home WIFI though.) TV Service is Antenna, Sat, or Internet Streaming.... Would LOVE cable, but they do not offer it here. Was informed that if I pay for install charge they will do it, but it was greater than $15,000 so that was a non-starter.
Contact - If ever I disappear and stay gone, my profile has a email listed, but for those who can't access profiles, just add yahoo to my profile screen name.
If anyone does atempt to contact me through that, please use something in the subject line about the forums. (Like "This Email From {ScreenName} from MRR Forums" or something along those lines.) That is the email I use for "online" purposes, and stuff will get burried under the avalanche of "online" emails... Any place that requires an email to register to purchase, accounts here and other forums, Magazines, store "loyalty" programs, etc... I have gotten 53 just since 12:01AM..... And my "unread" is several thousand long. I periodically go through and mass delete emails simply for that reason.
So if I don't recognize the sender, and it is not anything that looks like "Read Me!" it might get missed...
Hope all are well, and all enjoy the day!

I feel sorry for all you guys roasting in the heat.
It is 75 degrees here right now! My daughter is dealing with 100+ in Seattle.
So strange.

Is that your pregnant daughter? I hope she has air conditioning so she is comfortable. Has she lost power at all?
If we lose the furnace in the cold, we can always go out back and chop down a tree for a fire, it is pretty hard to find air conditioners growing out back.
It is much cooler today 26c/79f right now, a more normal temp where all the doors and windows are open all day long and we have a gentle breeze blowing through. Our need for A/C is hopefully over.
I never turn on the furnace until October (hockey season) so I hope we are back to normal and most of our time can be back outside enjoying the great outdoors.
"Home"?
I thought that was the place you sent neighbors, other peoples' kids, relatives, and their pets when you were tired of them.
Good evening Diners. A large coffee please, Janie.
Temperature. If it is too hot over there send some over here.
Teriyaki Beef, Jasmine Rice with Cucumber Pickle.

To the world you are someone. To someone you are the world
I cannot afford the luxury of a negative thought
it is opressive outside today.
Garry , It would just be me. we can see what we can work out.
Working split shift today and tomorrow as the great phone upgrade of 21 happens this week at work. Not sure what my role needs to be, pick up a phone and dial test prob.
Still going through vacation photographs.
Plenty of good natural scenes.
These look like backdrops to me.
And some dilapidated buildings.
Nice shots!
Evenin' folks!
Well...... It has dropped about 20°F from what it was earlier this afternoon. At the moment looking out the window I see a driving rainstorm and hear a few thunder-boomers as well. 'tis good as we also need some rain!
Lady that lives across the street a couple houses down at the corner from me. Had just walked outside to walk her little doggie when we both heard a ......BOOM!!! She headed back in the house quickly! So did I....
This morning I loaded the defunct gas grill parts in the back of the Tesla and went to the recycling place here in town. Yesterday I was there with a car fuill of old chains and some other rusty stuff. It all came from the farm I grew up on and most belonged to my Grandfather and Great Grandfather. My son didn't want any of it so...... Got recycled!
OK, back to watching the storm out the window....
My friend just sent this to me, he had to go East from the coast about 500kms to help look after his elderly parents in the heat. He sent me this from the drive.
There is a town 160kms NE of Vancouver that was hotter today than any recorded temp in Las Vegas history.
moelarrycurly4Nice shots!
Thanks MLC. I have had a lot of fun sharing my trip this month.
Still 74 degrees and a beautiful evening outside.
We have a Tropical System off the coast of Africa with a 60% chance of forming into a cyclone. Hurricane Season... That is all the weather will talk about down here. The news has not even mentioned what you guys are going through.
One terrible thing about this vacation... I missed all my mangoes this year!
I told my neighbor that she could harvest all my mangoes while I was gone. I am sure she enjoyed them.
There was just this one mango left on the tree. It became ripe today.
I brought it inside and enjoyed it. This was a 100% perfect A+ mango. It was sweet and delicious.
The lady down the street has an old purple mango tree that has a lot of fruit just becoming ripe. I think I will stroll down and ask for some tomorrow.
maxman "Home"? I thought that was the place you sent neighbors, other peoples' kids, relatives, and their pets when you were tired of them.
Now myself, I heard home is where the 'hearth' is. However, since im a Railfan, I prefer the homage.... "Home is where the HACK is". Which would make me homeless right now as i dont have one in my backyard.

Sadly, the RIP Track gains another entry. The Pastor Bob thread gives some details. He set the last signal behind himself in November.

It is up to the diner members if he will get added to the RIP track. His last post was before I joined the forum. Let me know what to do.
If he is to be added to the RIP track, I need to make him an appropriate and respectful avatar. Please let me know what would be most representative.
From what I have read, he was an ATSF modeller.
Is this OK?
One of my favorite bands, Bleachers, just performed live on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon. I can't remember the last time he had a live band in the studio.
It really looked like they had a great time, and the music was fantastic.
One more thing getting back to normal.
SeeYou190From what I have read, he was an ATSF modeller.
And a darn good one , at that, IMO.

Perfect.

Good morning Diners. The usual tea and toast please, Chloe.
Anyone want any rain? More than enough here. I'll send a few buckets of the stuff for some warm weather.
Pastor Bob. Never knew him, but it is still sad to here the passing of anyone in the modeling railroad fraternity.
Kevin. More lovely photos. Thank you.
A busy day collecting a few items before any chance of seeing the train room, so better get started.

Good morning, everyone.
Just a quick check-in.
I joined the forum after Pastor Bob was no longer posting, so I never got to know him. Sorry to hear the news. His obituary sounds like he had a good and enjoyable life.
Have a good Wednesday.
Howdy ....
Sorry to hear about Pastor Bob. It is remarkable he passed away a few months ago, and it took a while for forum members to realize he was gone.
MLC .... I'm going to try to send a PM . I stll have a message thread with you that is two years old, and will post there.
Our boat is now fixed and ready for the holiday weekend.
Have a good day.
Good Morning,
I didn't know Pastor Bob but still sad. Wish I knew what happened to John Boy. I have looked in Regina's paper but as I am uncertain of his real name it is a slow process. He had throat cancer a few years ago.
Yard work today according to the Person in Charge. Back yard grass repair is planned. Not a big area to do as only about a quarter of the yard is grass.
Still looking at ebay but I find that most items I initally fancy after a few days of reflection I no longer desire.
The heat wave is supposed to hit over the weekend and get to 99F on Sat. We do get such temps on occasion.
CN Charlie
This is one of my favorite pictures of all-time.
It captures my middle daughter's personality perfectly.
CN Charlie ... I recall John Boy's.name was something like John Callum . Not sure about spelling. I did not find him when I looked in internet. I think he has a son in or near Billings Montana. If I recall correctly, John did shop for model trains at a hobby shop in Billings.
Kevin ... Very nice picture of your daughter.
