Wait. Are you saying that the lifetime pass is not a pass?
Then what good is it?
Somewhere in this general catch-all thread there was a minor discussion of teams choking, especially in the SE Pa area. We can now renew the 76's membership to this list. So bad that even the Heimlich couldn't save them.
Guess Who!
BTW: Can YOU see the pictures, or is it only me who can sea the picktures?

Morning all, it is sunny as usual and our so-called two-day heatwave has just been extended to a week with temps to 37c.
Had a fun, fun, fathers day dinner. The kids brought a massive feed of sushi from a place that gets its fish right off the dock a block away, it doesn't get any fresher.
My son and his girlfriend stayed for hours and we played some games and both my daughter and my sons' girlfriend are incredible pianists and have amazing voices and we all sang songs around the piano for a long time. The girls sang an old Boz Scaggs tune called "we're all alone" and just blew me away, they were so good. The sons' GF is so good she plays to perfection. We also did a good job on "The Weight" and "Against The Wind". Sang some Frank Sinatra hits, Musical #s a whole lot of fun.
As they were leaving I said, "I love it when my three kids are here". My son's GF started to cry and said, three kids, am I one of your kids"? I said "of course", she then put her arms around me and buried her face in my shoulder. She did not have a great home life, we will leave it there, but she is amazing.
Kevin, sorry to hear of your bad experience, that seems to be the way of the world as the population explodes. Crowd control in what is supposed to be a wilderness park just does not seem right. I love going up to Banff but only go in the offseason as it is not enjoyable with wall-to-wall tourists. September is good as the kids are back in school and unlike April, May, the Grizzlies have full tummies and just say hi as they walk past rather than say hey look, dinner!
There is a whole lot of wilderness left in the world that isn't designated as a park and we prefer those places anytime. I have crossed the Rockies on FSRs (forest service roads) without seeing a soul, very memorable trips, though you must be comfortable being a long way from help.
oooh, look! There's my Loco again. 2861 ran out of Vancouver, that's why I got that #.
All the best to all.

At Rocky Mountain NP, your free pass gets you into the park without an entrance fee. The normal entrance fee is $25 for one day or $35 for seven days. However, between May and October, if you want to go into the park before 3:00 p.m., you must make reservations ahead of time online. There is a limit on the number of reservations. The reservations are free, but there is a stupid $2.00 "reservation processing fee".
They are limiting the number of reservations to the number of parking spaces at the various lots in the park.
So you do get in free with your pass, but you have to pay $2.00 to make reservations.

Good evening all. A large coffee please, Brunhilda.
Took younger granddaughter to Rainbows. (First step to being a Girl Guide.) She had me helping to make a kite etc. etc.. I rather enjoyed it. Just do not say anything; I might have to go again.

I saw a random ad online the other day. It was something like "Let the Battle Between the Ties and the Tools Begin!"
Yah, I realize they know I'm into trains, but I don't hand lay track, so why this ad? It took me a couple of days to realize this was a Father's Day ad and not about laying track.

I love the international particpation in the Diner. David said "good evening" , and only a few minutes later Bear said "Good morning". .... I say good afternoon !
Kevin .... Your photos are beautiful in spite of the grumpy people working for the National Park. As far as I know all the people working here at Land Between the Lakes (National Recreation Area) are all very friendly.
Lion .... Thanks for the yummy goodies. (no matter what you call them)
MLC ..... Sometime, we should have another model railroad get-together.
We still have company, and I therefore will be very brief.
Everybody ..... Have a good day.

Hi Everyone,
Brunhilda, coffee with cream, please.
This goes back a ways, if I remember correctly, Rocky Mtn. National Park was called Estes Park and was a state park along time ago. That's in addition to the town of Estes Park. I don't remember when the feds took it over.
I have a senior life time pass to any and all national parks. I never heard of what Kevin is describing with the reservations and all. These passes used to cost only $10 when I got mine. Now, I think they're around $80. I can't imagine any ranger saying, "...the right people...". I'm surprised they would still have a job. As for Schutzstaffeln, at least they didn't direct you to the delousing showers. Park rangers don't have the easiest job. They have to put on a helpful demeanor to all, but also put up with a lot of rubbish from patrons, not implying that anyone was giving them grief.
The passes do come in handy. With one of those, you can get your entire carload into a park for free, but that's about the extent of it - free admission. Every thing else costs.
Thanks for all of the pictures Kevin. They're very enjoyable.

As Yogi Berra used to say, "Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded."

It's a trial program for the Park Service to limit the number of people into the parks. Right now, five of the National Parks require reservations: Yosemite, Acadia, Rocky Mountain, Glacier, and Haleakalā.
Even with the pass, you cannot get in before 3:00 p.m. without a reservation, which is made days or weeks ahead online.
Watch out! Don't use the word "free"!
up831 Park rangers don't have the easiest job.
I have a good friend that is a park ranger in Banff National park and a niece that works as a campground ranger in the summer to pay for University. The biggest eye-roller in the stories they tell is people demanding a refund from the Federal campground because it was raining during their stay. Next on the list is when someone stops their car and throws food out the window for the grizzly so it comes closer to the car for a better photo-op. They then want Parks Canada to pay for all the scratches the Grizzly put in their car with his giant claws. Of course, there are some other whoppers.
There are signs where the roads that head into the backcountry that read in large print.
YOU ARE LEAVING CIVILIZATION, ONLY OFFROAD EQUIPT VEHICLES SHOULD TRAVEL PAST THIS POINT. TAKE FOOD AND WATER WITH YOU IN CASE OF BREAKDOWN. THERE ARE NO SERVICES INCLUDING CELL SERVICE.
It is really hard to miss these huge signs, yet! They find tourists 50 miles up these dirt goat paths on their rented Vespa scooters wearing shorts and sandals and are out of gas.
Of course, it will be someone else's fault, not their own.

Nah Kolaches don't have stuff on top just inside. At least Texas Kolaches are that way. There is a huge Chech community in the hill country were they make authentic Kolaches.

I have not done that part yet as I found a free file online. I am versed in the 3D design software. but have not tried making my own stuff yet.

And there is what I see as a terrible danger.
The program gets extended, and the "processing fee" goes up. Then our sacred public lands become off limits to the lower classes.
Who knows how many lifetime passes have been issued? This program can make all of those meaningless.
I had plans to spend weeks every year in these parks for my retirement.
This is a slippery slope.
I ordered "Rocky Mountain Oysters" in a steakhouse in Wyoming. I took a bite, but could not bring myself to eat them.

Living the dream.
Good evening diners.
We spent last night in Golden, Colorado. When I planned this trip about 12 weeks ago, I wanted to make sure I visited the Colorado Railroad Museum. I contacted them, and they assured me they would be at full operation by June.
Well, they are. However, their full operation includes being closed on Monday! The museum was not seen. The Colorado Model Railroad Museum in Denver is also closed on Monday.
So, we took off across Colorado on two lane back roads.
What would a visit to Colorado be without visiting South Park?
While driving along, I noticed this cute little water tower off the side of the road.
It had an old railroad track next to it, which I followed.
I found a small train at the end of the track. I don't know anything about this. It could be a tourist attraction, club project, or something else.
There was also a small village at the end of the line. Everything was fenced in with No Trespassing signs, so I could not get great pictures.
There are a lot of cattle guards in rural Colorado. This one was made of old rail sections.
The countryside of Colorado is simply littered with old boxcars. Some are being used as storage sheds, some are just sitting there.
Another neat thing we saw was this old bridge abutment. The bridge is long gone, but the stone abutment could last another few centuries in the countryside.
You never know what you will see as you drive a two lane coutry road. These were both real surprises.
How about an old water tower? The foundation footings were still there for the coal tower, but it was gone.
The town of Del Norte, Colorado is using this handsome old depot as the City Hall building.
That is all for today. I hope all are well.
The World Is A Beautiful Place.
Good morning Diners. Tea and toast please, Zoe.
A sunny day this side of the pond.
Hospital appointments today and tomorrow. I could be off line for a day or two later.

I agree completely! This idea of an online reservation system for the five parks is not good, and there are all kinds of problems that it could lead to.
I'm doing the same as you. Since retirement, I've been to 11 National Parks, and I've done a lot of backcountry hiking in them. My daughter gave me a mounted wall map of the U.S. with all the parks on it. It has scratch-off labels for the parks I've been to. It's on the wall in my train room. I'm limiting it to the parks I get to since I've retired, not ones I visited years ago. It's pretty neat.
