Your statements are so true that refreshed my memory of a story I must tell.
My oldest daughter in Faribault had just moved into her new apartment. First time out of her mom's house was a little late but I was so proud of her as she just got out of the nest for the first time. She was kind of lonely and needed her dad to hang some pictures and help with handyman things around the apartment that she didn't know how to do.
Okay enough about the heart touching entry of the story
After I spent the night on the couch and did some more things for her the next day, it was time for me to go home. It was kind of cold the day before and we got that drizzle sleet thing that froze. That Sunday it snowed but only about an inch. Those are the worst. It's better to have 6" of snow so your tires grip on the sides then 1" over ice.
To make a long story short, I have a four-wheel drive truck and was nursing it on the highway at about 30 miles an hour. It was very, VERY slippery. I don't care what kind of four-wheel drive running equipment you have. That is for traction and slippery does not help grip your wheels on the road.
It is amazing how these little preppy whoever they were, drove their little four-wheel drive SUVs like they were invincible. They kept passing me, one by one and often times looking over at me like I was some kind of idiot.
I was not the idiot that day my friends. I never had less than two football fields between me and another car because I knew how slippery it was. I was even regulating the cars behind me slowing down so they would pass because I did not like them behind me.
It came up sudden around a Bend on Interstate 35W. About 5-6 semis in the ditch and the idiot SUVs that had passed me as well, one rolled over among other cars cracked up on the sides of the road.
I remember it looked like I was approaching a war zone
It was only the distance I kept that saved me. I slid and I slid and only stopped about 6' short of the semi on the outskirts of the crash, pumping my brakes the whole time even though I had ABS. I know it helped in conjunction with the ABS.
As Ed stated! I thanked God no Clown was behind me that day.

The PRR K4 used to sit on display at Horseshoe Curve. One day somebody decided to drag her out and throw some water in her boiler!
There are some wonderful sounds on this video of the 1361. From reports I recall reading when they began getting into a deeper overhaul of 1361 they found corrosion on the boiler where the sheets were quite thin. It is sure fortunate nothing serious happened during this "shakedown" run!

Charlie I was saddened to hear about your wife as I understand things are a little more serious than I had originally determined.
You and I are always joking about you sending the cold weather down here and I've always enjoyed the humor with that.
I can only Imagine how this covid thing has been very hard on your wife this last year. I'm so sorry to hear how serious this is from how I originally perceived it.
You two have been together for 40 years as you just pointed out and I think that's great. That says a lot. I only wish the best for both of you and I'm very confident you are there for her. Just like I am always there for my Judy.

Charlie, I'm praying for you. You are really having a hard time. I wish there was some help I could give, but it doesn't sound like there is any short term answer. You are in our thoughts.
TF, I, too, get upset at people who think their 4WD will allow them to travel on ice. They think the 4WD makes their brakes work better.
I will promise not to complain about the weather. But I'll start not complaining tomorrow. Right now, I'll complain that at 10:00 p.m., it's -24°F (-31°C). Our high today was -9°F. We are holed up in our house, and go out only to walk the dog. Thankfully, we will have a warming trend beginning tomorrow. By the end of the week, our highs should be in the 20s. Spring is coming!
Today is Shrove Monday, or Lundi Gras. Starting at midnight tonight, Fat Tuesday, or Mardi Gras, is the day to party and eat the meat because on Ash Wednesday, you give up those things for Lent. I really miss New Orleans.

My daughter in Faribault lives right next to two main lines of Union Pacific traveling along the Cannon River. Beautiful.
I was over there one weekend last summer out on her three story deck, teaching her how to wave to the Train Engineers as they came by. Another weekend there was a Chessie System locomotive in consist with the Union Pacific locomotives.
She called me shortly after and let me know she doesn't need her alarm clock anymore. Apparently she was getting up and having coffee on her deck waving at the engineer every morning for a long time.
She was so excited later telling me when she oversleeps and the engineer doesn't see her on her deck. He started blowing his whistle Shave-and-a-haircut Two-bits. I kid you not Kids

Hi everyone. I have been too busy for the last few days to keep up with everything on the forums.
Shuffling toilets about today almost killed me.
I moved the good Kohler toilet from the master bedroom to the new 1/2 bath in the guest bedroom, and I installed a new el-cheapo toilet in the master bathroom temporarily until that space becomes a train room.
When setting the toilet in place in the 1/2 bath, I had a leg cramp, and I could not stand up. Then, somehow, I pulled a back muscle. Now my back is hurting badly, worse than it has since I stopped heavy work 12 years ago.
Anyway, I got all the doors in place, and the guest bedroom is done.
This tiny bathroom is only 46 inches by 52 inches!
The dining room is next on the work list, so I moved the dining room table into the guest bedroom for the time being.
Done: Living Room, Kitchen, Master Bathroom, Garage, Guest Bedroom, 1/2 Bathroom.
In process: Lanai, Dining Room, Master Suite
Not started: Train room.
I am getting there, much slower than planned, but it is moving in the right direction.
I have an appointment with the dentist tomorrow for a teeth cleaning. Hopefully this will be a quick one, it has only been three months since my last cleaning.

We don't have nearly as much tile floor as you have. We only have tile in the front and lower foyers and the bathrooms. Our rec room, stairs and landings are carpeted and the rest is engineered hardwood. Works for us!

I know from experience when you haven't worked hard for a while you need to do some freaky yoga stretch out exercises before you work hard again.
I remember one morning when it wasn't even that long since I worked hard I lifted two six-gallon buckets of saltwater from my filtration system in the basement and carried them up the stairs for my fish aquarium in the wall.
Man I pulled a muscle in my back fiercely that morning that knocked me out for 5 days.
I learned after that you need to take your time and stretch out before you lug heavy things.
Age doesn't have anything to do with it. I remember when I was in my early twenties, It was early in the morning and I slung a 25 horse Johnson off the dock to the back of a boat. Yikes, ...The same thing happened back then too.
Or when you're already tired in the evening and you strain too hard after the push of the day.
I'm sorry that happened to you Kevin and I hope you snap back into shape very soon here my Friend

39F this morning with a steady drizzle and low ceiling. I'll have a regular and a blueberry muffin toasted with butter please Zoe.
All the trucks seem to have made made it south of DC without incident so that is good. I always emphasize that it is better to get there safely than on time but as has been mentioned it is not always possible to deal with all the others. The rallye truck footage was a good example as are the numerous photos in the news of people hoofing it with their all weather tired cars stuck on the hill in the backround. Driving semis and other rigs it is always a challenge to keep distance in front of you as people seem to regard space in front of a truck as an invitation to "dive in".
Still packing thing up in prepartation for moving. I think we are about to the point where a POD would be in order so we can so this all logically.
Kevin, Those $20.00 dollies at the big box stores probably look pretty good about now, no? I keep a hand truck and some small ratchet straps about the house for all the heavy stuff as well but it still doesn't get you out of the woods does it. I assume with all the tile in your house you don't need to fret too much about the termites right? There is a massive old 4/5 story abandoned building next to the hotel we stay at in Sebring that is infested and supposedly can't be torn down or rehabilitated safely so it just sits there decade after decade while they wait for it to collapse of it's own weight. hope you feel better soon and can get back to it at the house. As has been said, getting old is not for sissies.

Kevin, that's bad news. Backs don't heal up overnight, either. Maybe it's your sign to take it easy for a while. If it's any consolation, the train room looks great, and a bathroom in there, no matter how small, is one of the best things to have. Put in a small refrigerator, a microwave, and you could stay in there indefinitely.
JR, I'm tired just thinking about your move. Hope it continues to go smoothly. Have they finished the inspection on your new house?
MLC and Garry, we have a sister in Bowling Green, Kentucky. She said they were doing OK, but they are retired and don't go out anyway. They did lose power for a while. I love Bowling Green. That is a beautiful part of the country.
Well, in spite of everything, it's still Mardi Gras! Hope everyone has a good day. It's 8:00 a.m. on Fat Tuesday -- that means it's time to start the first beer of the day! I actually used to do that in my younger days.
This picture is of King Rex toasting the city. In the 1980s, we moved downtown to a hotel for the week of Mardi Gras, and this was in front of the hotel on St. Charles Ave. My wife is in the plaid shirt -- she's on my shoulders getting a good view.

The pictures are being shared in random order, so you get the good and some of the bad. Many are similar, but I will try not to duplicate. Pictures from some other photographers that I saved might accidentally be mixed in, but I believe that 99% of them were taken by me.

My entire house is done in the same off-white tile except for two interior rooms. The train room will have a different tile, and the master bedroom will be carpetted. The garage has porcelain gray tile, and the lanai will have travertine tile.
Tile seems to make for a cooler house, and the Roomba cleans it very easily.

I have two 1,000 pound capacity flatbed furniture dollies that I used to move the toilets around the house.
The back started hurting when I tried to put that heavy Kohler toilet in place over the closet flange in the tiny 1/2 bath. It actually started with a leg cramp, and I could not stand up and walk it off.

The house is concrete block on a cement slab with ceramic tile, so not much for subterrainean termites to munch on. Flying termites getting into the "attic" and eating the roof trusses is a bigger concern down here.

I can't even remember the last time I was up till after 3:00 in the morning. Judy worked a five day weekend and I was out of town mudding a basement till Sunday after noon.
We were both tired out on Valentines Day so it was like it never happened. Today is Judy's day off so last night we enjoyed our steaks, all the finger food and festive cheer we had prepared for. The clock seems to spin faster when your enjoying things like that.
It was the first time I can remember that I slept till 11:00 too. Well, ...It was a fun night!
In the confusion I forgot to compliment you on all your beautiful work on your house Kevin. You've been working hard and it shows. Besides admiring all your hard efforts on the Nice remodeling you did! I couldn't help but notice that beautiful wooden corner hutch. I zoomed in on that. I really like that corner hutch

That was made by Dyrlund back in the 1960s. The original plan for the guest bedroom was to find all teak furniture for that room.
Unfortunately, the hutch has a gouge in it now. I don't know how it happened, but it is a shame.
We bought it in an Antique Store in Georgia a couple of years ago.
I work tonight. In Lancaster County PA we have fat, or shrove, Tuesday, and we have fasnachts which are a bit like donuts without holes in the middle. The idea is to use up the last up the last of the bread dough and lard or butter before the six weeks before Easter.

I went ahead and started lettering my Sunset N5b cabin car and wouldn't you know it, I messed up one tiny decal, but did get one side completely done. I think when I get paid next I'll order another decal set. It feels like a lot to spend for just one decal, but I want to it to be right and done. And I don't wish to cut and splice other decals on the set to make the one I need as they're so tiny. Paying for another set would be worth it to me.

Good morning from the Beautiful West Coast where it is a sunny 8c.
Just taking a break from ripping up the laundry room floor as the kid has an important meeting and needs quiet.
Backs are just a bad design, I put mine out two or three times where I had to crawl on hands and knees to the bathroom and I don't know how I hurt it. I remember the Canucks were in the playoffs and one of our star players put his back out by bending over and picking up a piece of toast off the floor that his daughter dropped from the high chair. He missed a lot of games.

Me too Dave, I am not a crowds person at all. Cruise ships, Disneyland, big cities I am chomping at the bit to get out of those places. I would rather be out in the wilds or plummeting down a ski hill or canoeing or rafting down a river. Sitting on rides in a theme part after waiting in line with a gazillion screaming people is not for me, I want to do the driving and be responsible for the final outcome, that is where the adrenalin rush comes from. I have never found even the most thrilling ride comes close to the outdoor activities I love, you know there is no risk involved in getting on Space Mountain. Doing loops on a roller coaster doesn't quite measure up to doing loops and rolls in an aeroplane or glider.
I do like to relax as well, as long as there are things to do if I get restless. I took one trip in Australia on a 50' sailboat through the Whitsunday Islands, it was the most relaxing trip I ever took. I was quite happy watching the world go by and could throw a tank on and go for a dive whenever I felt like it. We also would go ashore and hike through remote jungles to some amazing spots. It was only the six of us and it felt like we were the only ones on the planet sometimes, especially at night when the stars showed up.
TF, People have called me crazy my whole life but also knew no one took safety more seriously than I did. I have had lots of injuries and broken things nothing that could not be repaired. I was at a full gallop on a horse once going along a mountain road when a bear came out in front of us and the horse put on the brakes and I kept going. I got a concussion and broke two vertebrae in my neck. I was lucky it was not worse. I have had a broken leg, ankles, ribs, shoulder and an endless list of soft tissue injuries. I missed very little work though, the Government was very accommodating.
Just got the all-clear from the kid, so back to work.

Kevin, your house is looking great. We have a lot of tile floors that were put in by the previous owner 32 years ago. They look like new, Actually they are warm in winter as the heat blows on them and they get warm. I can relate regarding backs. I hurt mine a few weeks ago putting my socks on. It is from an injury that happened when I was 30. Doc told me then that it would lkely give me problems and he was right.
