When I drove through West Virginia last month I was in Bluefield, where this massive concrete coaling tower was still standing.

This was a thrill, I had never seen one before.

Went to the drive-in last night on the Minnesota-Wisconsin Border.

Our local Wally World converts its parking lot to a drive-in, I think once a week. I haven't gone because it's a half hour each way, and that is too big a commitment to sit in a Wally World parking lot.

Thanks Brent, but nonetheless the video broke the rules. My bad. There is nothing to be gained by challenging the forum policies. Addressing such issues can be done far more effectively in other venues.

Good Evening,

Been hot here the past couple of days. Actually had a heat warning as it was 91F today with a humidex of 97. Too hot for my taste. Mind you I thought I knew what hot was until I went to Borneo. That was back in 2001 and I doubt I could manage that heat now.

Nothing new here except we did get a new critter in our back yard. The woodchuck that lives in the yard behind us paid us a visit yesterday and ate some seeds under the bird feeder. Guess it wasn't worth the trip as he hasn't been back. I found the space in the fence where he got in and will have to repair it. May not do the new fence until next year.

Well the new brass loco has finally left Toronto and is expected here Tuesday. That is my excitement.

I've been very busy here as my wife pulled a muscle in her back and has been laid up for the past few days. She saw a physio yesterday but only marginal improvement. She used to have a great one a few years ago but she only does university stuff now.

Sure wish Johnboy would check in.

Here is an old steam engine still in service in Mexico in 1964:

Here is another classic beauty that is being preserved at the National Railway Museum of Mexico:

This one still looks pretty clean even in 1963:

Another gem:

Good morning .....

Brent .... I never tire of photos of CP trains on Stoney Creek Bridge. Thanks for posting that one.

CN Charlie .... I, too, am concerned about John Boy.

John - York 1 .... I like the pcture of the barge loaded with railcars.

Dave ..... I like the photos of Mexican locomotives you posted today.

I recall seeing pictures of Mexican diesels that were very unique. I think their locomotive shops made them from parts of older, retired locomotives. Also, I remember seeing a photo of EMD FT's running in Mexico long after US roads retred FT's.

Strong Italian Roast coffee in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please.

***John - York 1 .... I too like the pcture of the barge. Wonder how close they got to the maximum weight with all those railcars?

The selling of older trains has been going well and gradually we are building the new collection. Have not started the new layout quite yet, but the room for it has been made.

I still get too tired to do much and need to lay down and take naps. On the bright side, the last doc said the MRI showed a decent outcome from all the treatments, so can't complain.

Have a great day all. Cheers! Cowboy Rob

Good afternoon, we had a day-long squall move through here with lots of rain and wind but it was really warm.

Today is game day.!

Seal-eating killer whales accumulate large amounts of harmful ...

Planning on having some rum and Pepsi(s) a huge bowl of butter-soaked popcorn while watching. The wife asked what I wanted for my game day meal and I said either roast lamb or steak. She came home with these monster rib steaks. I did some quick calculating and went and burned 1200 calories off on the bike just now so I am good to go.

Rob, hope you can have an easier time of it, staying well-rested will certainly help.

Dave, loved the old steam loco photos, I could look at those all day long.

The kid and his girlfriend were shacked up in the back bedroom all night till 1400hrs so I did not go work on the layout as planned.Grumpy It was their one-year anniversary of going out. Oh to be that young again.Mischief

Hope Lion is okay, maybe a phone call to Assumption Abbey is in order. I would just ask for the head of the largest indoor subway commission, that might get us through.Laugh

Time to hit the shower, get my first Rum and watch the trains go roundy while I wait for game time.

Go get'em boys.

Good evening, everyone.

I'm enjoying happy hour after a long day.

Walked two miles, had an hour men's meeting with breakfast, mowed the lawn, watched two Perry Mason reruns, took a nap, ... It's good I'm retired or I'd be tired.  The ice-cold beer tastes good.

Hope everyone has a good Friday evening, and for those with health problems, hope you have some relief.

Good evening, everybody.

Rob .... It is good to hear your treatments are have favorable effects. Praying for further heeling. Sounds like you are wheeling and dealing with trains.

Kevin ..... I like the coaling tower.

Brent .... The whale and sea lion pictures are interesting.

So, our MIA list is growing unfortunately. John Boy, Lion, Galaxy, Todd, and others. It would be great if they found their way back to the Diner.

Everybody..... Have a good evening.

Hi guys,

Short workday on the RRRR. Turns out, putting big old honking bars on all the doors and windows makes the jail look a lot less like a modern storage shed.

Made my weekly trip to Cottonwood, whih includes Walmart. Then came home and made up for missing my naps this week all at once.

I don't know if I want a beer or coffee.

Hi Brent,

The Orca pictures are beautiful! It's too bad that some of their family groups are suffering from a lack of food and conflicts with the ships.

We got really close to a group of Orcas when we were on the west coast north of Campbell River a couple of years ago. They swam right under our boat so close that they had to turn on their sides in order to avoid hitting their back fins on the boat! That was absolutely a once in a lifetime moment for us Ontarians! You get to see them regularly. We are envious!!

Buenos dias Amigos. Dan, aka Southgate here. I couldn't log on for many weeks. Exhausting every suggestion, I decided to come back as a "new member" Modified the forum name a little.   Why post here?

Well! My wife of almost 40 years was born and raised in Mexico City. She makes salsa in a traditional way. I'd watched her make it countless times, and she was going to make it one day. She said jokingly, to me; "Go make salsa." To her surprise, I sprang up and did it, and did so using as best I could her method. No measuring utencils.  Here it is: (All ingredients fresh)

About 10 medium tomatoes

A large bunch of cilantro, or 2 small ones

A couple large cloves of garlic.

2-5  jalepenos depending on your tollerance. Use seranos if you like serious bite.

about 1/2 an onion. Don't over do it here.

Salt.

Put a few tomatoes in the blender, blend them up enough so that now when you start to add the cilantro in controlled little bunches the blended tomatoes will be liquid enough to suck the cilantro down in and blend up. Do same with the garlic and onion. And the chiles. pour each blending of ingredients in a big enough bowl, Add some salt and stir it up.

As I said, a triditional recipe, note the simplicity. No carrots, mangoes, peaches, iguanas, pineapple, plums. Keep it simple.  So good on ANYTHING! Chips, Scrambled eggs, quesadillas, in beans, or refried beans with a little sour cream. Try it!

Mornin' Folks!

Flo, I need another pot of Organic Dark Roast Coffee to keep me awake!

Man Dave!  They were still looping up Form 19's back 12 years ago???  Probably just for an excusion demonstration???  Maybe they still didn't have radios???  LOL  Couple of those locos in that begining video do need to get in the shop for engine repair looking at the Smoke coming from the stacks.  Glorified Steamers I guess. Whistling

We sometimes loop up "orders" out at the RGVM (Museum) for crowds, just to show how it was done.  Usually find a kid to snatch the Form 19.  Has a message to whomever gets it and they can keep the form as a souvenir.

Hope all of you are having a great day and staying safe!

Good morning ..

Dave .... I watched the short version of the video. Very interesting ! Surprised to see an Alco PA was included. ... Thank you.

..

We are about to begin a very busy week. 2 of our 5 adult children will be here with their spouses and their kids. This time, it is our son from Tampa area and our daughter from Detorit area. More fun lake activities are planned. We just had the son from Cincinnati area here with his family.

Therefore, I will not have much time to particpate here for the week.

Cheers.

Hello,

Heartland Division CB&Q
Very interesting ! Surprised to see an Alco PA was included. ...

Here's an interesting TRAINS story that mentions the ex-Santa-Fe; D&H PAs:

http://cs.trains.com/trn/b/staff/archive/2012/10/10/south-of-the-border-the-railroading-isn-t-much-different.aspx

Two of the four PA that went to Mexico after their service on the D&H have returned to the U.S.

No. 18 is being restored as NKP No. 190 by Doyle McCormack. No. 16 was wrecked in Mexico and is being cosmetically restored for display at the Museum of the American Railroad in Frisco, Texas.

No. 17 and 19 remain on display in Mexico.

Back to hot and stuffy August weather here in NE Ohio. No rain last week and no rain in sight for the coming week Paradise

Cheers, Ed

Good afternoon, everyone.  It's hot and humid again, so I have been inside most of the day.

I got some layout work done, but not much.

Not much else going on here.  We're making plans to travel to see grandkids.  The youngest daughter and husband have bought a new house, so naturally my wife volunteered me to help move.  Not my favorite thing to do.  I may try volunteering to take the grandkids somewhere so they stay out of the way, and I don't have to carry anything.

I noticed that too. I'm guessing that their fuel consumption must be huge. Either that or they are way down on power.

 Eveing Diners

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer please and Dirk his dog treat.

Been MIA for a few days.

Thursday I felt tired and sleepy. Did not even feel like drink! Beer Boy that is tired!

Friday I felt some what better. Got a lot of weed wacking done in the back yard. Back of the house now looks like someone lives in it.

Really like the new Rayboi 40 Volt weed wacker! It is about 5' 7" long so my back does not hurt when I use it. Has good power and battery life is OK. Used it for around 40 minutes and still had 40% Power left.

Ed are on day or night shift? PRR Shark B unit is driving me nuts! I did a reset to factory default and runs fine on addess 3. Sat it to 2 bite address, 2000 and primary address 3 like the A unit. It now moves, and brakes, moves and brakes?

You said something about clearing the slots on the Digitrax system, how do I do that?

Going to sit out with Dirk, so later.

Ken and Dirk says Woof, Woof.

Alcos are known for Turbocharger lag. Until the prime mover gets up to speed the fuel will be very rich and the smoke is enormous.

EMD quickly adopted a gear-driven supercharger design that mostly overcame this problem, in simple terms. Two cycle vs. four cycle enters into the equation, too.

Got time for some "deep" reading?

Ah...  well yeah.  But out at the Museum we have have a few RS1 Alco's.  They do produce the black sooty smoke while throttling up a bit, but nothing like what those locos were putting out.  May be just different with the antiques we have out there.  I dunno...  We do have an "Alco RS-3m" (Lehigh Valley)  She doesn't produce much smoke at all even during throttling up...  Of course that is our "Hammerhead" Alco hybred which sports an EMD (567B) prime mover...  (grin)  Our most used engine is a GE 80 Tonner.  Uses a lot less fuel to pull our short trains.....  Nice handling and responce so our engineers like the old girl.

Take Care and Be Blessed folks!
