I couldn't believe it when I saw it. I see countless numbers of model locomotives up for bid on Ebay, but this!! [:0][:p] Good Goobly!Guess it's true when they say that you could buy ANYTHNG on Ebay. Including a 16 cylinder Amtrak F40.

She's number 389. Even has the strobe lights on the roof just like the Spectrum units! Good photos are provided.

Current Bid: $15,000 (the price of a new Corolla)
"Buy it now, Price: $55,000 ( price of a loaded Cadilllac Escalade)

Estimated cost to restore to running condition: $25,000 which is not bad considering the hard beating these units took. A friend of mine who still works for Amtrak told me that F40s on the east coast would travel thousands of miles beyond the point when they needed an oil change. Seems like any EMD in the 40 class was well built.

Interestingly enough the FLNX 418 was being worked on at a little loco rebuild place less then a 10 minute drive from my house. It had a matching passenger car to go with it. and the last I saw of it was being moved on the Wheeling and Lake Erie. Beautiful little engine. THe photo is actually taken in kent ohio at the shop. THough the sellers from kansas I believe. Anyways Good luck bidding.

These things were a real workhorse. I have heard all the complaining about them being underpowered for years, but they kept Amtrak going for years. They carry some nostalgia for me as the F40PH pulled the twice daily round trip Missouri Mule through my town when I was in Jr. high and high school. I wonder if it would fit in my basement?

I was looking at the listing and saw that in the same area (OTHER) someone had a dome car for $175,000. There was also a set of 4 passenger cars being sold as a set. Sounds like the perfect opportunity for someone to get into the passenger business for real. The details are easier to see in 1:1 scale, and you don't have to worry about paint hiding any of your hard work! Just need a big enough basement to work on it.

My American Diesel Locomotive book that lists locomotives specs. goes up to 1973, so the F40 is not in it. The Diesel Spotter's Guide is probably one of the best sources to check.

I may be wrong, but I'm assuming that since an F40 is a modified GP40-2 with a streamlined carbody, it's fuel tank capacity "may" be similar. As for MPG, because of the higher gear ratios for speed, mileage is likely better than a typical GP40-2.

Hopefully, someone with a Spotter's Guide or similar book will chime in with the info.

It's rather Ironic that even though the F40 is newer, there are still plenty of GP40-2s running around. I see them frequently here in Tampa ( CSX ).

That's a pretty good price, considering what other people want for them. At http://www.ozarkmountainrailcar.com/new_page_107.htm they've got "Low Mileage" Amtrak F40's 386, 393, 397 and 415 for $220,000 a piece. There's also plenty of other locomotives and cars and www.ozarkmountainrailcar.com

Depending upon where one lives, transporting this baby is going to require a few "greenbacks!" However, insurance? That is a curious question. If it's just going to sit in a backyard, would it be required? Then again, if it were severely vandalized or had items stolen like headlights, horns, etc. replacement parts prices would be through the roof. Yep, you're right! Potential heart attack!

Rather interesting and sad phenomenon in the U.S.[V] that in the past 5 years, I've read reports that a lot of sidelined, museum, or tour locomotives have had horns and lights stolen! What is up with these wack job idiots?! [D)] What could they do with locomotive horns and lights? Put them in their cars? [%-)]

Scenario:

You buy the F40 and put her in your back yard!

Five thugs walking by see it, hold a quick meeting and decide to break into the cab. Of course, they don't realize that the air tank is full and the K5 horn is rigged to go off like a car alarm!

They jump over the fence, break the lock and scurry inside. Sure enough, a few seconds after they're in the cab that horn starts-A-BLASTING!!!! What an attention getter! They cover up their ears and run out of the cab like roaches on fire! But they forget that THE FIRST STEP IS A LU-LU since the ground is 10 feet below!

Twenty minutes later, they're still laying on the ground, two ambulances are on the scene, the whole neighborhood is there, and just a few yards away are a group of cops laughing hysterically!
