Thanks!

I often think of "What if?" scenarios. Being strange also helps!

Antonio, it'd be even better if it was an FP45!

I think I'd work out a deal with the local shortline to let me run it on the weekends![8)] Just be sure to keep it locked up at night. Yeah, get a cool little remote that when you lock it the horn goes honk honk like a car. But be careful not to hit the alarm button by mistake, otherwise that K5LA will go off!

I can hear the head of our town zoning board "You want to put what in your yard???"
But then my property is zoned for non conforming use.

There is no such thing as a bad day of railfanning. So many trains, so little time.

Depending upon where one lives, transporting this baby is going to require a few "greenbacks!" However, insurance? That is a curious question. If it's just going to sit in a backyard, would it be required? Then again, if it were severely vandalized or had items stolen like headlights, horns, etc. replacement parts prices would be through the roof. Yep, you're right! Potential heart attack!

Rather interesting and sad phenomenon in the U.S.[V] that in the past 5 years, I've read reports that a lot of sidelined, museum, or tour locomotives have had horns and lights stolen! What is up with these wack job idiots?! [D)] What could they do with locomotive horns and lights? Put them in their cars? [%-)]

Go figure!

The insurance is also for the people who would trespass on your property just to climb on the thing, then fall and/or get seriously hurt.
THE LIABILITY IS WHA? AACKK...UGGHH....Thunk!

Don't forget the property taxes.
UNCLE SAM WANTS WHA? AACKK...UGGHH...Thunk!

Yes, there are thieves out there that steal locomotive horns, number boards, bells, and etc for their own vehicles or private collection. Those rotten apples give the rest of us railfans grief from railroads and law enforcement.

Take care,

Russell

$55,000 seems like a bargain price, but has anyone check on the SHIPPING AND HANDLING CHARGES? This item can't fit in a UPS truck .

So, how much would the shipping costs be? Maybe half as much as the basic locomotive price, since it is non-operational and would have to be towed to wherever you want it delivered.

Something like that would be neat to have. I'd put it in the backyard and gut the interior except fot the cab. Sell unneeded parts and build a layout inside. Then it could really be called the train room. [:D]

I was gonna bid but then I noticed the cracked air compressor. I don't think Walthers carries that part in stock. Such a shame.

That's a pretty good price, considering what other people want for them. At http://www.ozarkmountainrailcar.com/new_page_107.htm they've got "Low Mileage" Amtrak F40's 386, 393, 397 and 415 for $220,000 a piece. There's also plenty of other locomotives and cars and www.ozarkmountainrailcar.com

Sorry JP,

My American Diesel Locomotive book that lists locomotives specs. goes up to 1973, so the F40 is not in it. The Diesel Spotter's Guide is probably one of the best sources to check.

I may be wrong, but I'm assuming that since an F40 is a modified GP40-2 with a streamlined carbody, it's fuel tank capacity "may" be similar. As for MPG, because of the higher gear ratios for speed, mileage is likely better than a typical GP40-2.

Hopefully, someone with a Spotter's Guide or similar book will chime in with the info.

It's rather Ironic that even though the F40 is newer, there are still plenty of GP40-2s running around. I see them frequently here in Tampa ( CSX ).

I was looking at the listing and saw that in the same area (OTHER) someone had a dome car for $175,000. There was also a set of 4 passenger cars being sold as a set. Sounds like the perfect opportunity for someone to get into the passenger business for real. The details are easier to see in 1:1 scale, and you don't have to worry about paint hiding any of your hard work! Just need a big enough basement to work on it.

Good Luck, Morpar

These things were a real workhorse. I have heard all the complaining about them being underpowered for years, but they kept Amtrak going for years. They carry some nostalgia for me as the F40PH pulled the twice daily round trip Missouri Mule through my town when I was in Jr. high and high school. I wonder if it would fit in my basement?

Hey Guys,

Check it out for yourself. It's easy, just go to www.ebay.com and on the upper right side in the empty Search Box type in: 4518838601 and click on "Search. It'll take you right to it!

I could imagine buying it putting it in my backyard and then constantly hearing neighborhood kids asking to climb and "Blow the Horn!"

Would really be neat if a museum or historical society bought and restored it.

Think how cool it would be when someone slowed down in front cause you had your lights on, woo hoo you finally could pu***hem all the way to work !

No more rush hour traffic, you could just clear it out of the way. Wonder what size tires to make it road legal. [:D][:D]

Interestingly enough the FLNX 418 was being worked on at a little loco rebuild place less then a 10 minute drive from my house. It had a matching passenger car to go with it. and the last I saw of it was being moved on the Wheeling and Lake Erie. Beautiful little engine. THe photo is actually taken in kent ohio at the shop. THough the sellers from kansas I believe. Anyways Good luck bidding.
