We had a circus that came to town with tents, Cole Bros.  I was sitting in the front row and they brought the elephants out who marched around the ring, then suddenly, on command, they all stood up, with their front feet? on the back of the next.

An elephant who stands up in front of you is impressive site.

I also met a guide whose father was killed by an elephant.  Like a moose, they stomp you.

It's hard to fathom but there were war elephants.  I saw elephant armor once, it might have been just decorative, but who has the money to decorate their elephants these days?

Myanmar (Burma) has 5000 elephants employed in the timber industry.  They are considered calves until they are 18 and retired at 55.  Females can still get preggars into their 60's.  Bummer for them because gestation is 22 months.

They call their website Elephant Science Project.  Their lead picture highlights our cultural differences and none of the explanations that come to my mind Devil would pass muster with Cousin Vinnie.

Somebody should have painted eyeballs on the board. Big Smile

Sorry if I put a damper on the parade.

Just as sad to read about "Topsy" which has always had the stigma of being a victim of Edison and Westinghouse's The Current Wars, which is most likely not true since the "war" had pretty much been settled some ten years prior.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topsy_(elephant)

Still, the story continues with little basis of fact.

There is a tragic story in Ontario's history related to one elephant in particular named 'Jumbo'. Jumbo was an African elephant orphaned by hunters and shortly after sold to a Paris, France zoo and then to the London Zoo in England. He grew to an enormous size. Unfortunately over time he became difficult to handle and was subsequently sold to P.T. Barnum of circus fame in 1882. There was a huge controversy in England over the sale.

Jumbo was such a hit in New York that P.T. Barnum recouped his purchase cost in only three weeks! The circus would go on to make $1,750,000.00 between 1882 and 1885 mainly due to the drawing power that Jumbo had.

The circus travelled by train, and in 1885 it ended up in St. Thomas, Ontario. St. Thomas was an ideal location to set the circus up because it was a major railway hub at the time. Unfortunately, Jumbo met his demise in the St. Thomas railyard when he was hit by a locomotive while retuning to the circus train after a show. There are all sorts of versions of what happened and why. Some say Jumbo was trying to save a younger elephant named Tom Thumb who had wandered onto the tracks. Others say the the locomotive had ignored instructions to stop. Who knows?

Jumbo's name was coined by the London Zookeepers Association head, and it was a new name never having been used before. We use the word 'jumbo' to describe all sorts of large things like soft drink sizes and 'jumbo' jets, and the phrase originated with Jumbo himself.

Here is a photo of him:

This story always breaks my heart when I am reminded of it. Note the absense of tusks. Jumbo ground his tusks off on the concrete in his enclosure while still in England, likely due to the stress of captivity. Sorry if I put a damper on the parade.

Good evening all.

Zoe - I will take a chocolate frozen custard, and a coke please. Thanks.

SteveO - Thanks for the frozen custard! And I absolutely agree, frozen custard is not ice cream.

Ed - I see Mr. Pileated is still hanging around your place. When we did feed the birds, we would go through about that much feed as well, but when Mr. Bear started coming into the yard, we stopped feeding him and the birds. (Mr. Bear was about 500 pounds when we saw him... about 10 feet away from where we were standing in the garage....)

Weather - Nature has decided that it needs to make up for no winter by bringing snow today, and the forecast has it for the entire weekend.

W*^k - Or lack of it - I did send a electronic Resumé to a company nearby, and had two contact me via Indeed. Both were not a very good fit though, due to distance from where I live. (45+ minutes travel one way.) I have now stopped trying to get back where I was before, as they know what they need to do to get me back, but are not doing it, so I am done trying to encourage them to do it.

Trains - The railcar project I have been working on did not like the last color coat needed prior to decals, and it crackled/spider webbed all over. (Unsure if it was a reaction to the prior coat not fully drying, although it was about 24 hours prior, or if it got a bit to chilled.) So, it was stripped today and is drying from that. I will not attempt to paint it or anything else until it's a bit warmer. (My garage is insulated, but unheated. With it snowing outside, I would fear it would be a bit too chilly to paint in the paint booth.)

I will be working on a few cars when it gets a bit warmer, and have a few small projects lined up afterwards.

Have a loop set up, now need to clean the rails, and break out a train or two. Will have to  do a bit of clean up first though. I kind of made a bit of a mess setting up the temporary layout...

Hello to anyone I have missed, and hope all are well and enjoy the evening!

So anyway, frozen custard for all. (If you think it's just like ice cream, you're missing out, my friend.)

My favorite childhood memory was watching the frozen whipped custard being made at Euclid Beach Park which closed in 1969. It had a unique flavor and texture that is hard to describe, but it sure was delicious.

Fortunately, there is a Cleveland outfit that makes a pretty good imitation:

Thanks for the invite, Steven!

The birds have been battling the snow here and devouring the feeders! I'm going through about 20 lb. of sunflower seed a week Indifferent

Ain't nobody here but us post hogs.

On Wednesday I got an e-mail from my car dealer saying that if I wasn't driving my car every few days, I should do so to prevent dead battery and tire flat spots. I had driven mine twice last week, but the wife's car hadn't been moved in three weeks, so we decided to go out and get some frozen custard. Good thing that e-mail came in, since we had to jumpstart her car to get it going. And then on top of it all, we found that Osgood's, the wife's favorite place in Milwaukee to get frozen custard, was closed not just for the duration, but permanently. Crying So we had to go to Culver's. The custard there is pretty good, but the food leaves a lot to be desired, IMHO. So anyway, frozen custard for all. (If you think it's just like ice cream, you're missing out, my friend.)

If you would, someone post Mix Pink Floyd Fearless YouTube 6:07.  There's an instrumental steam engine horn in the middle of the song.

Good morning, everyone.  It was cold walking this morning -- 37°.

The orioles are chowing down this morning.

More concrete work this morning.  I'll be taking off forms and filling in.  I'll wait until it warms up.

Daisy the Dachshund is suffering a little right now.  With us at home full time, we are snacking more than normal.  That's means the dog has gotten some rewards for her constant begging.  That also means she has put on too much weight.  I'm pretty tough and just don't let her have any.  My wife, however, has trouble not sneaking her a bite every-so-often, so the weight loss will be very slow.

We're gradually opening up here.  I have a meeting Tuesday evening at a local restaurant.  They will be open for the first time in six weeks.  Our church will also open this weekend.  There was even some TP on the shelf at Walmart this week!

For those of you who have lost jobs, I feel for you.  Hang on.  Better times will return.  For those of you with health issues, I hope you can get some comfort and release from worry and pain.

Good Morning!

Another beautiful Spring day, lots of sunshine, crisp air, not a cloud or a contrail up in the sky. Had a visitor dropping by - a deer about 20ft. away! Too bad my camera gave up it´s ghost!

My printer died already some years ago and I have been doing quite wel without since. But now I need anew one, so I ordered one through Ebay. A few hours after I had made the payment via Paypal, Ebay informed about "an irregularity" with this order. I now have to claim my money back through Paypal, but that does not work! It´s not a big loss, but nevertheless annoying!

Time to spare? Build a steam punk engine!

I'm considering launching it again as I prefer a Night Flight.

With Judy knocked out by her white zinfandel I remember the last night flight was very good to me.

The currents are very similar to my last launch and I had good luck with that one

Oh what the heck,  I'm gonna bust the move

A year without ciggys is to be applauded.

At my age, I have friends that died of COPD, MI's, lung cancer.  I have seen very attractive women turn into prune faces.  I also have friends in their 40's, who use to look like Ken and Barbie a few years ago.  Now they look 10 years older than their age.

Cal Ripkin bought a $4 mil home in Annapolis  As a kid, a third baseman for the Orioles bought the house across the street.  I don't remember his name, he wasn't an Oriole very long but I doubt his house cost more than $20K back then.

You guessed itLaugh

Post Hog!

It was a memorable evening. My brother and my bedroom was upstairs.  In the summer we slept in the basement.

The air conditioner in the window took care of the first floor but nothing more.

Our abusive childhood lead us to think of alternate measures.  Freedom at mid-night was my brother and I would crawl across my N-gauge layout to pop open the window in the basement.

We only had to do that sometimes as all our parents in the neighborhood drank and usually never even missed us.

I remember the one morning returning as the birds were singing as we felt like vampires because we were up all night.

We came in the window and the N scale layout crashed to the floor.  Yes Mom and Dad woke up and asked what the Ruckus was.  I looked at Jim like thisIndifferent because I wasn't taught to think quick enough yet.

Jim yelled upstairs,  "We had to crawl on the layout to connect a couple tracks we changed and it fell down.  Sorry to wake you and we will try to be more quiet"LaughLaughLaugh

It worked!  And I learned a valuable lesson from my brother Jim how to schmooze when schmoozing is necessary

You have always bought everyone aBeer every evening.

I am now going to buy you aBeer tonight to celebrate your success.  Quitting smoking is one of the hardest things to do.

Have a La Belle Strasbourgeois on me.  Not just any beer but one of my top two favorites and very hard to find.

Congratulations again.  That was a tough thing you didPirateYes

 Afternoon Diners

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer please and Dirk Pip half a dog treat.

Lack Of Work Front No Unemployment For Me! Not sure why, because I cannot get hold of a life person but my benafit is $0.00. While I am not shocked with me only working part time I like to know the reason. I did a goggle search and with me reciving SS and working part time I should still get something from the state off ILL. I think it could be because my company had been paying me wroug. I was being paid out of MO till about a year ago. Then it was fixed and I am now being paid out of ILL. Be nices if I knew that was the problem? Whistling If so I can file for unemployment in MO.

Lion While I understand why ILL might want to know a person weight, if the person was holding a job why does it really matter?

Car Repair Front! Bang Head Good news it seems like it was just a clogged fuel filter, bad news? Whistling With it being a 1992 Bob could not get the filter off and had to replaces 2 feet of fuel line. He said it took 2 hours but only billed me for .90 hours. Book time was .25 hours. Battery was dead when the car came in? Interior light was left on by the Tow Truck Driver and it took 40 minutes to charge and it was only at 30% charge. So I had to buy a new Battery! Bang Head

While total was only $229.94 with out a pay check, well it hurt!

Time to sit outside with Dirk so later, Ken and Dirk says Woof, Woof, been to the park 21 days in a row WOOF!

I hate Rust

Evening Diners

Garry's Grand Trunk post reminded me of something I learned from my oldest daughter about five years ago.  It was something I never knew about or never stopped to take the time to hear before.

Elephants are a very large affectionate creature.  Studies have been done on elephants.  They think the human race is cute and like to befriend them and that's why they have always been so easily trainable.

Attacks on humans have been an extremely rare occurance in the past but always had a reason.

Everyone remembers the footage of the elephant in Hawaii that rampaged and went mad running away down the street.  It was because his trainer was mean and disciplined him wrong for so many years he couldn't take it anymore.  He never hurt anyone else but his trainer when this happened.

Elephants have feelings, emotions and tear ducts.  They have value of life, memory and know thier family members just like you or I do.

In India they have had problems with elephants in resent years coming into the village and attacking.  The other side of the coin of this is the herd is running out of space as it has been taken away from them more every year.

Family members of different elephant herds have been shot by helicopter marksman taking them as a threat of being too close to the Village but they were never a threat before the acts of shooting them.

Photographers,  tree or trunk huggers perhaps have taken pictures of elephant family members standing over their dead with tears comming out of their eyes for hours.  Aunt, uncle, mother, maybe grandfather I suppose.

I thought my daughters story was heart touching and something not wished to be heard but wanted to share it with you.

Not all stories are happy as the world is running out of roomIndifferent

On a happier note!  I'm Model Railroading with my Judy tomorrowBig SmileStick out tongueSmile, Wink & Grin
