Yeah, those ice cubes have to be clean and fresh. We have an ice cube maker in the fridge and we clean it out daily.
As for simple syrup, the recipe is so easy that no one should ever buy simple syrup at the store.

I'll go one better on the hot dog cooker - as I kid I checked out this book on simple electrical projects from the library. The first one was the simplest - a hot dog cooker. Step 1 - take an old lamp cord. Step 2 - take a pair of 10-pennet nails and a piece of wood. Yup, they actually instructed you to build this contraption
As it was over the summer at my grandparents, and my grandfather was quite the skilled carpenter, I instead built the generator. But the only magnet I could find to use was a pretty weak one so it never really worked. Looked good though, nice wood frame with a dowel for a shaft. neatly wound coil of magnet wire.

The last order was short about eight items which is not a big deal since we have plenty of food in the house, but it does create some problems. For example, we got hot dogs but no buns. Oh well, we'll just have to make mac and cheese with wieners sliced up. I went to the liquor store on Saturday morning. Once again the line was all the way around the back of the store (100+ people?). It only took 15 minutes to get in once the store opened which surprised me, but what surprised me even more was that my back didn't complain too much! I was standing for a total of 25 minutes. I didn't think that was possible. I was using my cane and I was able to lean on the wall occassionally so it worked out. I'm not going back for a while. I spent $600.00! Booze is expensive here. In college, we ate tons of hot dogs.
My house had the electric hot dog cooker. Not sure if you remember these, but basically it had two electrodes. You stuck each end of the hot dog on the electrode, plugged it in, and in about 5 seconds, the hot dog was cooked.
I have a feeling these were not one of the safest inventions ever. I have not seen one of these since then, 45 years ago.

So many routes this thread is taking so myt imput. College food, I was given a cetain amount of money outside of tuition but by the time I paid rent and bought art supplys (went to the Maryland Institute, an art college) I had no money left for food. My landlord was just starting out and was pretty broke himself but I ate there alot but mainly hot dogs and mac and cheese. I to this day do not like mac and cheese, even the gormet type. As for hotdogs, I can go there but only with everything on them ,all we had back at my college start was katsup. Anyway after the first semester was over I went home for x-mas break and my mom was so shocked at how much weight I lost that she incresed mt stipend. Other things, hate liver and other such dog food.
I had egg salad for dinner. But the glazed ham has about 5 more minutes to go and then I will be having ham, cauliflower, and mashed potatoes for Easter dinner.
Our NMRA division's board met for the first time today via Zoom. It seemed to function well for everyone, including the two people new to it. I tried to start up a Jitsi meeting to try it, too, but found it was nowhere near as intuitive as Zoom. Our chief clerk will take it for a spin and report back next week on it.
While Zoom has had some bad press recently on privacy, I think mostly it's because people turn their address book over to it when there's no need to. Zoom also upgraded our meeting to more than 40 minutes, so that limit is even more Swiss-cheesy than it was before (you simply need to click on the original meeting link again to bring you back to the meeting FWIW.)
Went over to a member's house to show him the basics of ballasting. He was going to get some 91% alcohol to use to wet the ballast before bonding it, but it's sold out everywhere. I told him I'd tap my "prepper supply" of 91% so he could get what he needs. Must be a lot of disinfecting - or ballasting - going on somewhere.
Sad to lose John Prine after losing my Mom. The world is certainly turning differently these days.

Actually, I can't complain about what we had for supper. We had smoked pork ribs with sliced potatoes and sweet potatoes, and cauliflour. We put a rub on the ribs and then smoked them for two hours so the smoke flavour was not too strong. Then we cooked them dry in a slow cooker on low for three hours, and then added BBQ sauce and carmelized them in the oven. The veggies were grilled on the BBQ in a foil pan with olive oil and garlic powder. We have enough ribs left for another meal.
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Where I come from, in PA Dutch land, pork and sauerkraut with mashed potatoes is one of my favorite meals. ANd while I am one of those people who ordinarly hates to have my food touching each other (I will get a separate cup to put veggies in so they don't mix in with my meat and especially gracy if there are mashed potatoes, etc. Like Thanksgiving - I usually have a plate and 2 or 3 bowels, the plate gets the turkey, stuffing, and mashed, all with gravy. Small bowl for creamed corn, another small bowl for cranberry sauce, and a large bowl for the lettuce with bacon dressing). Pork and sauerkraut is my one major exception, the proper way to eat this is to mix it all up with the potatoes. So not only would most people be disgusted by my plate, it was usually the least chosen selection --Randy

Re: the seperate plates, I'm not quite as bad. I like my salad on a seperate plate because I don't like the dressing running into the other food. All the rest can stay on the main plate as long as it has the common decency to stay put. For example cooked carrots are okay; carrots cooked in that sauce, no way.
The rest of that stuff, with the exception of the mashed potatoes, does sound disgusting. I can see why you need 3 bowels to get rid of it.

Luckily our standard fare was 3 main choices, plus you could get hot dogs and hamburgers, and they had a sandwich station where they would make just about anything and had multiple types of bread available. The only bad days were weekends, when it was leftovers. Depending on what it was, saturday was usually OK, Sunday though - the guy who made the burgers did a booming business. Was bad when he had a day off, because the replacement didn't know how to do it properly and we basically got the same sort of overcooked hockey pucks my Mom made at home.

We do have a lady that does excellent meatloaf in our church- that is the exception rather than the rule. I remember one day in the college caffeteria them offering us a choice between meatloaf and liver and onions The meatloaf could have lubed your car (actually more like a semi) with the grease. The liver was well......evil and smelled worse than that. They even got over the intercom and said sorry for the selection tonight but we had to pay for the new Coke machine. My then girlfriend (now my wife ) and I walked four blocks over to Subway. We were at the end of the week and I didn't get paid till the next day. That was the only time we went dutch treat.
Live - hard NO from me, too. Chicken gizzards, and the heart - I used to fight my grandfather for who got those when we all got together for a Sunday dinner.
If you need more than a fork to cut through a meatloaf, you're definitely doing it wrong, and no wonder you hate it.
It's almost Easter - time for some never ending egg salad. ANd ham. Just like the meatloaf - ham doesn't last too long around here, as I will usually sneak in the fridge and snag a piece every time I pass by. Not counting how much I eat as I cut up the leftovers to put in bags for the fridge.
That's a big way the virus has affected me - I eat way too much when I'm home all day and bored. I don't get much exercise to begin with, but at least when I went to the office, I typically parked a fair distance away and walked in and took the stairs. Now my 'commute' is less than the distance from the office to the bathrooms at work, and going down to the basement and cutting and fastening some wood isn't really much exercise.
