This is week 3 plus for us. Last day out was the 16th of march but it really started the week before (the 16th is the last day my daughter worked but it was just a meeting, lockdown started week before). All in all it is closer to 4 weeks for us out here in the bay area.

We make our meatloaf with lean ground beef and mild Italian sausage minus the skins. The Italian sausages are frequently on sale for peanuts and they add a nice flavour and some moisture to the mix. We also use a couple of eggs, breadcrumbs, finely chopped and lightly sauteed onions, tomatoes, celery and garlic, and sometimes green olives. We spice it with ketchup and Frank's Hot Sauce as well as some Worcestershire Sauce, oregano, basil and thyme. We coat it with a mix of ketchup, tomato soup, BBQ sauce and garlic powder before baking.

The trick to keeping it tender is to use lots of bread crumbs.

I'll have to make some soon!

Then she cooked it until it was about as dried out and hard as a brick,

So, is that how fruit cake originated?

Ha!! I love fruit cake too!! We have a friend who makes us a Jamaican fruit cake every Christmas. There is enough rum in it to get drunk on! Definitely not dry.

I do agree that some fruit cakes, like some meatloafs, can be brutally dry!

Back on topic - we have cancelled the cleaning service for the time being. I have to go out on Thursday to pick up groceries and liquor, and two packages. The groceries and one of the packages will be brought out to the car, but I'm not real comfortable with going into the Post Office for the other package or the liquor store. There have been two recent instances in town where young, healthy people got really sick without having been in close contact with anyone.

I WISH it would last all week, but it disappears rather quickly around here.

The trick is to make six meatloafs at once!

never met the singer - hopefully he's a nice guy

Meat Loaf has a house on Captiva Island. I have met him a few times, and he is a very nice fellow. It is hard to believe he is in his 70s now.

With Captiva Island, Boca Grande, Marco Island, Naples, and Sanibel Island all very close by, celebrities are fairly common around here.

A lot of restaurants have signs up stating they have zero tolerance for people harassing celebrities.

Nearly all celebrities I have met are completely normal people. Art Alexakis is a really interesting guy. Brian Johnson is the funniest celebrity I have ever met. Sean Hannity is on the other end of the spectrum, not a fun guy at all.

Rush Limbaugh, on the other hand, is nearly a comedian, and nothing like his on-air personality. If he overhears you talking football, he will work his way into your conversation.

Meatloaf? Not now, not ever, never. It’s a consistency thing for me. If I found myself with my arm trapped by 10 pounds of the stuff, I think I’d chew my arm off to escape.

I would be willing to wager that my meatloaf could change your mind. Mine is a masterpiece.

A few years back my wife & I ran across a restaurant in western PA that actually had a cold meatloaf sandwich on the menu. To this day that's the only eating establishment I have ever seen one offered.

City Diner in Atlanta had a thin slice cold meatloaf sandwich that was great. Unfortunately they are out of business.

mbinsewi
Kevin, just how much meatloaf does it take to get you through a week? I mean, everyday? meatloaf?

Six loaves... 8 pounds of meat. 5 pounds of ground beef and 3 pounds of ground pork.

richhotrain
By the way, I love Meat Loaf.

Me too. This video for the duet he did with Cher, Dead Ringer For Love, is very special for me. If you look in the background, you could see a really tall guy that you might recognize.

What was the venue in Tampa?

John Prine played at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater. Not my favorite venue because the seats are apparently designed for twelve year olds.

I saw Brian Setzer there last year, and swore I would never go there again, but John Prine made me change my mind.

It is so uncomfortable and cramped.

Nope, the trains on my layout run on diesel fuel. Very prototypical.

Six meatloafs at once? At the size we make them, I could get 4 in the oven I suppose. That might be enough to prevent me from eating it all up the first night.

Brent - does Jason Shron know you just revealed the next Rapido project to the public?

Dave - WISH I could restock my booze. With the strange rules the governor enacted, alcohol PRODUCERS are considered essential businesses and can stay open, but the state run liquor stores are all shut down! Beer I can get, and a couple of the local grocery stores also are allowed to sell wine. But when my vodka is gone, I'm high and dry.

Randy, I share your concern. Here is Illinois, liquor stores are allowed to remain open, but you have to come inside to pay for an online order. No delivery, no curbside pickup. I am afraid to go inside the store, but if I run out of Scotch, my life, as I knew it, is over.

Liquor stores are open up here as well, Rich.  There are some things a man's gotta do! Mischief  So the wife usually goes, with mask and gloves....Smile, Wink & Grin when she makes a grocery store run.

You have something that has just been legalized down by you Rich, that could supplement that scotch, kinda make it go a little farther.......Whistling

This morning, the Gov has closed all state parks.  They were trying to keep them open, thinking people would self distance themselves, but, as I understand it, people can't, along with the extra litter, and vandelism.  Thanks idiots! Super Angry

In my small town, we have one regular grocery store, and a Walmart that has groceries.

In this morning's paper, the grocery store reports it is now giving a 5% discount to anyone wearing a mask when buying groceries.

My brother in law is a psychologist who has been laid off.  He works with military PTSD patients, but was employed by a company that either doesn't want to or can't do telemedicine.

My cousin in Ohio reports he has gone to the liquor store to get enough for the next two months.  He's done that three times just this week.  Big Smile

Liquor stores in Minnesota are kept open.  I don't know, I guess they consider it a necessity up hereWhistling  A few weeks ago there was a news clip that there were rumors on the internet that the liquor stores were going to close.  They said liquor store sales were up 500% from that.  They then stated, please don't panic, the liquor stores will remain openLaugh

My friend Erv ran out of bulk tobacco.  This is not considered a necessity and all the tobacco stores are closed.  The Casino and reservation is only two miles down the road from his house.

There's a store down there called Crooks Liquor and Tobacco open to the public.  They just installed a walk-up window to their store so no one has to go in.  I understand they've been very busy.

The more important consideration is, are the cashiers and stockboys wearing masks?

Didn't know you still have those laws there. I remember the blue laws when I first moved to Baltimore and thought them very odd having come from Californias. Remember going though sates with those vweird liqure laws but also remember Baton Rouge where you could get driver though drinks (as with boose).

Well, as of about fifteen minutes ago, I no longer have to debate with myself over whether to go to the NMRA National Convention in St Louis this summer (I registered two years ago)-- the National organization has sent out an email advising that the committee has cancelled the Convention and the National Train Show.

This is confirmed on the Convention web site.

I remember the blue laws when I first moved to Baltimore and thought them very odd having come from Californias.

I recall riding trains when the dining car/club car steward would have to make sure patrons had either finished their drinks or they would have them taken away as the train passed through dry counties and sometimes whole states. All the beer and liquor cabinets had to be locked up, too.

In Texas you couldn't buy pots, pans or washing machines on a Sunday at least up until the law was relaxed in 1985. Sales of automobiles are similarly restricted in some states on certain days.

I remember when bars had to close on election days. Kentucky and South Carolina are the last two states in the U.S. that still restrict alcohol consumption on election days.

Cheers! Ed

Something like that was also on the news clip the other day.  They had some commentator talking about it saying liquor sales are off the charts.

I'm not afraid to admit I hooped it up a bit the first week trying to wash my fears away when this thing first started.

It didn't work!  That sort of behavior will wear a guy out pretty quick.  Quite soon I went back to my occasional beer nightWink

I remember that in Kansas years ago, police boarded a train and rode for a while until it entered a dry county.  They arrested the conductor and the lounge bar tender.

I just came upstairs from a visit to my layout.

Needless to say, I was stunned to see passengers crowded on a station platform in total disregard for my social distancing mandate.
