Germany keeps the borders open for all, invited or not invited

I think know what you're on about, Ulrich, but as my daughter has got back into Germany, and is going to sit things out there, I'm kinda grateful!

Whereabouts in Germany is your daughter, Bear?

Sometimes, things change faster than one would expect. With the exception of the borders to the BENELUX states, all borders are now officially closed for non-residents. Public life has come to a grinding halt, all events have been cancelled, all government agencies are closed, train service is very much reduced, hospitals and nursing homes are closed for visitors, most flights are cancelled, as most shops are closed as well. The good news is that you can still get toilet paper and, despite the number of infected people being on a steep rise, the number of deaths remains incredibly low. There is a strange feeling around, as it is really quiet outside.

I don´t dare to think of the effects all of this will have on the world economy! Better to start bracing ourselves for the 7 meagre years to come!

Happy times!

I predict that the world economy will bounce back sooner rather than later. People want to get back to work. Companies want to sell their products. The pro sports teams want to play games. People want to travel and go to restaurants. Lots of people will see their savings increase because they are not spending money on entertainment and restaurants. That money will be burning holes in their pockets.

The biggest question is how many companies have the resources to survive the drought. Lots of companies, both big and small, will go under unless the governments provide proper support.

I hope I haven't infringed upon the forum rules.

She left the Czech Republic before they closed their borders and is currently in Dresden. Even though all the touristy stuff has closed, she’s thinking of quietly moving around to see the country, staying well clear of Berlin, though.
A girl she met in Zurich, and a German family that she was on the train with from Prague, have both invited her to stay in Hamburg, so unless internal travel is stopped, I guess she’ll end up there at some time.
Perhaps the only good thing about Facebook, is that I can communicate with her every day.
Cheers, the Bear.Smile

Bear, your daughter should stay clear of Berlin, the Rhein/Ruhr region and Bavaria. These are the hot spots in Germany. Hamburg, while being affected, is not as bad as the regions mentioned before. Internal travel is still possible, but the number of trains have been reduced, running on weekend schedule during the week. Finding a restaurant may turn into a problem, as many have closed on their own discretion. Museums, galleries and other public places of interest are closed.

I live south of Hamburg. Our neck of the woods is one of the areas being affected the least - yet.

Happy times!

Good morning gang.  Just stopping in to grab a breakfast sandwich to go.  Looks like I may be sent home to work from home.  Never thought I would be so happy to be considered "non-essential personnel". Laugh

Hope everyone stays or gets healthy (coronavirus or otherwise).

Later gents,

Good morning.  Coffee, bacon, and eggs from the diner.

I tell my wife all your jokes.  She just looks at me like she always does -- "you're a nerd".

Things on the plains haven't changed too much yet.  School is out for spring break, although they may extend that.

Church yesterday was full.  We didn't shake hands with others, but otherwise everything was normal.  Walmart and the grocery store have no toilet paper.

I finally got the grain elevator to a stopping point.  It was a Christmas gift, and not something I wanted, but so as not to look ungrateful, I built it.  I have no place on my small layout to put it, so it is sitting in a mountainous area right now.  I guess this means I have to build a bigger layout!

Hey, guys! I'm back from my medical leave. Surgery went perfectly, so I thought I'd buy everyone in the Diner a beer. So, what did I miss?

Good morning .

Steve O .... Welcome back. It's good to hear the surgery went well.

I think many forum members are staying home and working on their model railroads. The phrase in the news is "social distancing".

I read that the term "quarantine" can actually only be used in the Province of Quarantine in France.  Otherwise, it should be referred to as "sparkling isolation."

While searching for some info for Dave´s planned "layout on the spit", I came across this video of certainly one of the most spectacularly landscaped narrow gauge layouts. The layout is named "Cliffhanger" for a good reason and was built by John de Frayssinet, a former British pilot, who is tied to a wheel chair.

Extra strong coffee in a SOUTHERN RAILWAY mug, please and thank you.

Have been slowly getting a little knocked down by the treatments, but still in great spirits and have done some cleaning out of the train room to make space for building the additional tables. Even slow progress is still progress.

Need to drop in here more often and peruse the pics and vids being shared. Hope everyone is doing well these days.

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

My home, Lee County, Florida, has become the "hot spot" for Florida infections. We have had two deaths, unrelated man and woman, both 77 years old.

The woman was in terrible shape with all kinds of other medical problems, and was in many high risk groups.

However, the man was fit, trim, and very active with no other medical conditions as reported by local news. His friends and family stated he was obsessed with healthy living and maintained an active lifestyle. Officials have no idea how he was exposed to the virus.

He went from being without symptoms to deceased in less than 48 hours. He lived in a high density assisted living retirement community with hundreds of other active seniors, and they are not testing any of them.

Lee County is only allowed to conduct 32 Coronavirus tests per day, and they take 3 days to get back. If your primary physician decides you need a test, you are put on an appointment waiting list that will take a few days to get you to the top.

Add the three days it takes to get the results back, and you will probably be dead before they can even confrim you have the virus.

There are over 400 primary care physicians in Lee County, and only 32 tests per day, and they are not testing a population of elderly people they know have been exposed.

This sounds terrible to me.

Germany is now closed and it is expected to stay that way for the next three months. Airports are being closed down, public transport services are limited, churches, mosques, temples and other places of worship are closed, sports arenas are closed, schools and universities are closed - just about everything is closed. Restaurants can only stay open between 6am and 6pm and must allow for a distance of a minimum of 5 ft. between guests. we are more or less under a curfew, as there are no places for us to go to. I am sure that one day we will have overcome that dang virus, but with our economy being frozen solid for 3 months, we will end up in an economic crisis, which will dwarf the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Ouch!

Happy times!

non-essential personnel

Well, scratch that.  They can't seem to decide if I can work from home or if they absolutely have to have me at work.  Confused  I guess it's good to be wanted!(?) Laugh

I can't understand some of the stuff people are buying up.  The latest one I heard was people concerned about having milk for the long run have started buying up baby formula.  Consequently, the parents of babies that need it, can't get it.  Ridiculous!

You wouldn´t want to know, believe me!

The layer of civilization is a rather thin one, which wears off quickly in times of a crisis.
