York1/John, do you live in LA? Or just visiting?

I lived in the Lakeview area of New Orleans, and worked at a school in Mid-City New Orleans for many years.  We still have a few relatives there, but we don't get back often.

Thanks for the offer.  If I am ever back down that way, I may try to look you up.  No plans for the near future, though.

The Bonnet Carre spillway is an engineering wonder.  Millions of gallons of Mississippi River water held back by 7000 long wooden timbers.  We used to be able to go down into the spillway and get loads of dirt for our yards.  It was great topsoil from Iowa and Illinois.  Not sure if they still allow that.

Thanks!

The heck with the fish fry, I prefer prime rib on Friday night.

Lion your extended leave of absence was well deserved I'm sure.  It would be nice of you to touch base and follow-up with some pics thoughYes

Good Evening,

Just waiting for the rain to start again.

Today I pulled out my first 2 locos as I have a short piece of track set up with a DC powerpack. The first is an Athearn F7 with rubber band drive. It runs but not well. I got it for my birthday in 1958. The second is a Rivarossi 0-4-0 Dockside that I got for my birthday in 1959. It actually runs quite well but is noisy.

I ran trains for a while yesterday. The express reefer train is put away and a short local has taken over pulled by a Consolidation or Hog if you use CN jargon.

Ken, I look forward to reading all your posts. My wife had an idea for Dirk. You might try taking some of his 'business' home and putting it on your lawn. He might then think it is ok to do it there. If not you have my sympathy only to a certain degree. The Afghan Hound I had required a mile walk before work and the same after. I wouldn't go if it was raining but blizzards and -40 didn't stop it. He was reluctant to 'do it' on our lawn and he got restless if he didn't get exercise. Mind you it was likely good for me too.

Have a nice evening,

CN Charlie

Good evening all.

Zoe - A big RBF please. Thanks.

Ken - Whoever says they are tired of your posts, will have to deal with Vinnie. The rest of us still read them. (I was going to say they would have to deal with me, but Vinnie is a bit bigger than my 5’6” frame.... so he can still be the muscle in my book!)

I can relate to a lot of your retail customer stories... I’m not sure if my best "customer question" was the time I was asked if I was wearing underwear (by a very little boy who wandered away from Mommy, who was having the "Everyone wears underwear" conversation while in the store, he evidently did not want Mommy to buy his new underwear for potty training... Big Smile) or the time I was asked, while w*^king in Erie Pa, which part of Pittsburgh we were in..... Dunce

Batman - Drum guy visits occasionally, and in his absence, I can stand in. I’m currently learning to play “Careless Whisper" and "What Happens in a Small Town", the latter by Brantley Gilbert. (Most recognize "Careless Whisper" as being done by George Michael. A Great Sax player is needed in that one though to do it justice.) When I play with friends, I almost always stand in on drums for another friend on "Wonderful Tonight" by Eric Clapton. (Said friend is more rock than that song allows...) I’ve recently learned "Down in Tennessee" (Mark Chesnutt) and "Do I Make You Wanna?" (Billy Currington) as well. (Yes, I have a vast musical liking. Mostly Country, but also Pop, Rock, and a bit of them all mixed on occasion. I have played songs from country [70’s and newer] to rock from 50’s on, to Pop from 60’s on.)

I prefer acoustic sets, but play at home on a Roland electric set, with a added Gen16 acoustic/electric cymbal set. (Plays like acoustic cymbals, but are much quieter than traditional cymbals.) If I played on a straight acoustic set at home, I would be relegated to the storage shed out back....Whistling

Mr. B - To unsubscribe from a thread, I believe you need to do it via your profile page, IIRC. (Once did the same thing....)

SteveO - The forums seem to be moving better now, please thank everyone there for me.

W*^k - Still going good. Recently became eligible for health insurance.... but will stop there Vinnie. Sit back down and have a RBF, on me.

Weather - Cooler today, after a record high earlier this week. (90F in October.... Who knew?)

Trains - While the layout hasn’t made any progress, I am planning on attending Berea's Train Show on Sunday. Maybe something good will be found to kick start me on making progress.....

Hope all the rest I didn’t mention are well, and everyone have a good night!

Speaking of dogs---

After we lost Shelby, Hooper the male hunted the area looking for her....Wife went into a funk. So---I found a Chessie breeder in Oklahoma that was near having a litter of pups hit the ground, and bought one for her. At the same time I discovered the breeder had a 6YO female that she had rescued, that she was willing to sell. Arrangements were made, finances were settled, all is good. Wife does not know that there is a second dog coming----yet. The reason for the second dog?, male dogs have the propensity to kill pups, or at least try to, like a tom cat with kittens.

The second dog is a female that has had a litter of pups, and has been around the pups that are on the ground...my excuse as an insurance policy for the safety of the pup. The dog just hapens to love retrieving, and will deliver to hand.

In all of this the wife one afternoon in jest?? says,"I wonder if we could get a second dog ?" "Donno says I" " I'll check". I waited several days before telling her that there was another dog coming, she was actually excited about the thought. When we were first married I had three Chessies living in the house, and they went with me on the boat, staying in the wheelhouse, or the foc'sl.

Everything is set to fly the older dog to Maine, however, there is a transfer in Atlanta, (the center of the universe for flying) and the airline will not allow a dog to fly if the temperature is above 80 deg. in Atlanta. We had snow in part of the State last night.....In Atlanta?.....

I'm going to guess the dog might make it possibily by mid-December. The pup will be ready to travel by the end of this month, so mabe I can get a two-fer.

Watched the Love Train, that could get scarey.......

Wife has been puttting food by, apple, wild plum, grape, dried apples with cinnamon, plethra of seasonings, tomato sauce, salsa, dilly beans, pickles, dried squash. We both got doe permits, she got two, I got one, so the meat situation should be resolved for this winter. (Georgetown and Arrowsic Islands have an over abundance of deer, so the State Wildlife agency is using this to manage the herd) I sit in the kitchen, watching the field in front of the house, and at the appropriate moment-----!

Will finish the wood shed tomorrow, painting will be quick, airless sprayer, two days to fill it with the wood I have on hand, and then the duck decoys and the shotgun come out of hiding. Smoked duck breast makes for good snacking material.

Grapes are just about cooked, have to get ready to help hang the bag so the juice can drain out for jelley.

Prayers for those in need,

herrinchoker

Good Morning!

The day has not yet decided whether to be a nice one or not. I am catching a little more sleep lately, which makes me feel better. I stopped drinking coffee past 4pm, whch could be the reason.

Janie, it´s right between breakfast and lunch, so it´ll be just a hot chocolate for me, please! I don´t mind if you add a handful of chocolate chip cookies to my order - they go well with the hot chocolate.

herrinchoker
Watched the Love Train, that could get scarey.......

Amen to that, Jan! I am just glad I am off the market for over 35 years now. Some of the girls in that video would make me run fast!

The Danish authorities have put up a hitch for our planned move to Denmark. Despite being a member state of the EU, the Danish government doesn´t want to see Danish real estate passing into foreigner´s hands. While I have a certain understanding for that, this rule may hit us hard. Exemptions are possible, but you need to apply at the Department of Justice, proving that you have a special relation to Denmark - which we don´t have, other than our desire to live in peace and quiet among the friendliest of all people in Europe for the rest of our days. Should our application be turned down, well, that would put Petra and me into quite a spot.

Not really a happy camper today!

Today´s NZR video features "Double Thunder To Woodville"! Enjoy!

morning all, how about some french toast?

Well , summer has come to pass indeed, in my part of the world.  The temp this morning is a balmy 44 degrees Fahrenheit in sw Pennsylvania  my tomato plants are still fine though, those are gonna go until the first sn<w hits, ay the rate they are blooming.

I took the plunge this morning..... i bought a DCC system for the layout. Nce powercab. It's small, but expandable and enough fodme right now.  Got it from tonys train exchange for 159 usd.

Work is going ok, but I've decided to look into schooling for a career field that's in huge demand in the Pittsburgh area-IT/Systemsadmin. I mean, always keep moving up in the world, and there's always the offchance my current place of employment would move me into that department once id get the degrees.  Im enjoying life at the present, but planning for the long term future.

Today finds me going to a slideshow event for area railfans to show off our pics. Dinner is provided by attendees.

Hope all have a great day

Good morning, everyone.  Just got back from walking the dog.  It's a beautiful morning on the plains.

Jimmy, that's what I use, and I really like it.  I have a small N Scale layout with a double mainline.  I have only two trains that run at a time, each with two locomotives, so I never have more than four locos running at once.  I've never had a problem.

Ulrich, that's not good news.  I didn't realize an individual country in the EU could do that.  That's too bad for you, but keep hoping.  Maybe you will qualify for an exemption anyway.

Herrinchoker, I've got my supply of wood all put up in the shed for winter.  Just yesterday, my wife said she was getting anxious for the first fire.

Goose season starts today in my area, and duck season starts next week.  This is also the time of year for a strange phenomenon.  At the local high school, students park their cars across the street from the school rather than in the student parking lot.  They all have shotguns in the cars and head out hunting after school.  They can't have a gun on school grounds.  Our antlered deer season starts in November, and that's when students start skipping school until they get their buck.

Hope everyone has a good day.

 Eveing Diners

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer please and Dirk Pip a dog treat.

Garry the reason I call him Dirk Pip is two fold. His given name was Pip which is OK I guess? As you may have seen on the site I am a Clive Clusser fan. His first character was Dirk Pitt. If you ever seen the move Rasie The Titanic Dirk Pitt was played by Ricaherd Jordan.

So Far Been A Good 4 Days Off. Got the front and rear grass cut, planted more grass seed and finished the front border.

Charlie I will try the poop trick with Dirk.

One of those slepless nights! How I hate them!

There is good news for all D&RGW narrow gauge buffs. D&RGW T-12 #168 is back to life again! This little Tenwheeler had been retired in 1938 (!) and was displayed in Colorado Springs for 80 years, before it was moved to the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR shops for restoration in 2016. See her on a test run filmed 4 days ago.

And here is the test run of my WMC HOn3 model of her.

Sunday Morning!

Time for my virtual Sunday big breakfast, containing all those lovely greasy things my doc tells me not to eat! Chloe, her is my order of scrambled eggs, crisp fried bacon, sausages, a stack of pancakes w/maple syrup, buttered toast and jams, OJ, and lots of coffee, please!

It´s been quiet in here the last few hours. I did have some problems getting into this place later in the day yestaerday, but that seems to have been only a temporary issue.

Nice and sunny outside, but rather cold. Early morning tems just a notch above freezing. I hope it will stay that way for a few more weeks.

Todays New Zealand train video introduces the Bush Tramway Club to us.

And, as it is Sunday, we will have a double feature, the second video presenting the Ferrymeade trams!

Enjoy!

Good Sunday morning.  Just coffee this morning at the diner -- donuts at church.

Nearly finished with some layout roads.  Maybe I will get more done today.  I have to put some stripes on the highway and fill in landscape around the edges of the road.  Then I get to start on my favorite part -- scratch build a building.  I'm not sure what I will do next.  It's in a town, so I'm thinking maybe a McDonalds restaurant.

Hope everyone has a good day.

 Afternoon Diners

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer and Dirk Pip a dog treat please.

Hard to believe but this is my first BBQ of the year? When we first moved here I BBQ 4 times a week. Finally got burnt out BBQing I guess. Plus the Sweet Baby Ray BBQ sause plays heck with my GL.

Wife and I did some running with Dirk today. I returned a power block (charger) to Best Buy. Could not charge my tablet, turns out my power strip was unpluged? Whistling We all so went to Pet Marts and then the park. To bad it was a cool overcast day but Dirk did not mind.

Woman are strange! While we where at the park it started to drizzel (we where undercover) but Dirk wanted to go for a walk. So I took him for a short walk. Wife got Angry at me because he got damp. Yet she wants to spend $55.00 for a groomer to get him soaking wet? Just seems strange.

Well BBQ is all most done and trains are running great!

 So later, none smoking Ken

Good evening ....

Ken .... Thanks for explaining how you named Dirk. I very rarely watch movies and I do not keep informed about the various entertainers. So, I am not familiar with the actor or the movie you mentioned. ...... I am happy to read you are enjoying having Dirk .

Yesterday, I installed about fascia about 18' long on the layout. I still need to paint it. This will complete all fascia on my layout.

Everybody ..... Have a nice evening.

Back from Southern Command,

We went to a great day of Blues and folk music yesterday at the Mississippi John Hurt Festival. Taj Mahal was the key performer.

Great weather and all day music. It was just as dry down there at our house as it is here in KY at our house.  Finally we are getting some rain here in KY this evening ( not much)

That is about all from here tonight. I must retrun to w*rk tomorrow for a week of on call.

I DO hope you mean SWEET Baby Ray's, Ken. That stuff is really TOO sweet for me. I usually like to make my own but in a pinch, my favorite bottled stuff is Stubbs Original or Hickory Burbon:

Went to the NMRA Berea train show yesterday. Really sparse crowd, well, not even a crowd. By 1 PM I doubt there were even a hundred people left. I heard some grumbling from vendors. Maybe a temporary thing, maybe a trend?

I bought one Bowser freight car and a box containing a big, "vintage" Heljan brewery complex. Guess I did OK since I got it for $10 and when I got home I checked Walthers and Ebay and their price was much higher. I may use it for a background building.

Mrs. Pullman slipped on some muddy ground while tending the chickens. Her knee is slowly healing but I'm (gladly) doing all the chores around the house and farm. I blame the funky foam rubber "flip-flops" she had on*. It takes a moment more time to put proper chore boots on but... well, you know the outcome.

* Crocs, that's what they're called I believe.

Hope everyone is doing well and had an enjoyable weekend.

Went out to my buddy Erv's today and watched the Vikings Kick Butt.  Had my new bass out there and we played guitars after the game.

It is like riding a bike.  All my old songs started coming back to me and I started hammering them them out.  Ozzy,  Pink Floyd,  Zepplin,  Nazareth,  AC/DC,  they all started coming back, it was fun.

Erv likes the idea of a switching layout in his garage.  It will have to be N scale so it doesn't take up a lot of space.

The go-ahead has been approvedYes   Sweet...... More Fun.

We had a great weekend! A group of long time friends got together to celebrate our collective 500th birthday. Most of the group have known each other for 46 years when they met in highschool (I'm a late comer - only 43 years with the group).

Warning: I'm going to go on a bit about the main meal!!!

We are all foodies so as usual we indulged extravigantly. Dianne and I bought a beef tenderloin roast from Costco that was into three figures. Initially we weren't really happy with what we spent, that is until we got to taste it! It was so tender it was like butter! I wrapped it in bacon and smoked it for a little less than an hour just to add a hint of smokey flavour. Then I put it on the BBQ in a baking pan and cooked it very slowly for about 90 minutes. The roast and bacon were cooked perfectly!YesDinner

For several weeks we had been saving our beef drippings and meat scraps from several meals so we had a nice rich dark base to work with. When we were finishing the gravy we added a little Port and a bit of butter. The gang raved over the gravy!

We were treated to Yorkshire puddings which I love! We also had excellent roasted veggies and a nice, slightly acidic beet salad, both of which added enormously to the experience! For dessert we had butter tarts and apple pie with ice cream. The pasteries melted in your mouth!

I apologise for going on so long but this was one of the best meals that I have ever had!!! It was better than any restaurant meal I have experienced! Bonus - we have leftovers!!!

You are all invited next time!!Smile, Wink & Grin

Cheers!!

Good Morning!

We had the first frost of the season this morning! Quite early!

It´s nearing lunchtime in this neck of the woods and, Dave, the description of your beef tenderloin roast made my mouth water like the Niagara Falls! Save some for me, please!

Modern computer graphics can do miracles! I just found a colored edition of the classic Buster Keaton movie "The General" in the web!

While not true-to-life colors, the coloring does add a new dimension to the movie. I will watch it maybe later in the day!

Have a great day!

Happy times!

Ulrich, you and Petra are welcome to our home any time! It would be an incredible pleasure to be able to meet with the two of you and to entertain you in a proper manor!

Alas, we can only hope for a better back in my case, and for you to find a much better place to live.

Cheers!!

Good morning.  Coffee, eggs, coffee, bacon, coffee, hashbrowns, coffee, please.

Another beautiful fall morning.  It was cool enough this morning that I had a hooded jacket on for my walk.

My wife told me her wishlist for some new lighting in the house.  I had been putting her off by claiming the attic was too hot to run the wires.  She remembered and now the weather is cool, so I need a new excuse.  Maybe that it's now too cold in the attic.

I've wondered how some shows seem to draw huge crowds while others don't.  I have to believe that the marketing makes a difference.  I went to a show a while back that was crowded with kids.  They must have really marketed it to school kids who got in if they brought canned goods for the food bank.  The kids brought their paying parents.  For many of the kids, I'll bet they had never seen a model railroad before.

Have a great day, everyone.

Happy hour in my neck of the woods. Please be invited to the poison of your choice!

I have not yet started to watch the colorized version of Buster Keaton´s "The General". Instead I did a little daydreaming of running my trusted WMC HOn3 D&RGW T-12 over a little layout, which I, should I ever get some HOn3 track, may even build one day. It´ll be something rather simple, though, just a type of oval with a stub-end siding, a flagstop, a water tank and a hotel - similar to the Shady Rest Hotel and the Hooterville Cannonball!

I have not yet posted another NZR steam train video, so here it is "At Speed To National Park"!

Enjoy!

Happy times!

Tinplate Toddler

It´s been quiet in here the last few hours. I did have some problems getting into this place later in the day yestaerday, but that seems to have been only a temporary issue.

Yeah I noticed to that forum traffic has been slower... no problems though!

I DO hope you mean SWEET Baby Ray's, Ken. That stuff is really TOO sweet for me. I usually like to make my own but in a pinch, my favorite bottled stuff is Stubbs Original or Hickory Burbon:

I agree with GMPullman on the BBQ sauce front! Stubbs is really good! Much better and Sweet Baby Ray’s (or Sweat Baby Ray’s if you like that version! Big Smile). Regratbly good BBQ sauce really doesn’t exist overseas...

I have that same Bowser car, as an incomplete kit, decorated for BN, and a similar GN that I think is a different company (it was a used hobby shop find out of original box). I really like those cars, though they are in HO and currently stored!

Tinplate Toddler

Happy hour in my neck of the woods. Please be invited to the poison of your choice!

Enjoy!

I'll take you up on that offer Ulrich..... Thank you.

Judy always starts us off with a bloody on our Monday brunch to enhance our appetites.

The crazed yellow jackets on the patio leave a little something to be desired this time of year.

If you zoom in on the table below the Bloody Mary you will see they have learned,  don't mess with Track FiddlerLaugh Judy is allergic to bees, so she appreciates her watch dog.

I think I'll order one of those tenderloin sandwiches Steve-O.  I'll take it rare,  I feel a little brave today.

Thanks

I cracked the screen on my new phone againCrying

I must be a little bit hard on my equipment.

I was passing my phone over to Judy swatting a bee and it hit the concrete.

Shattered the screen againTongue Tied

Oh well what are you going to do.

It's pathetic I need a new phone againLaugh
