Good Monday Morning everyone —

hon30critter
Edit, please help me out. I'm having a C.R.A.F.T. moment, i.e. I Can't Remember A Frigging Thing!! How do I post a video? Thanks. Dave

Hi, Dave

For any of the YouTube videos simply highlight and copy the address from the YouTube URL address line. Then in MR click the filmstrip icon:

 MR_clip by Edmund, on Flickr

Once this window opens I simply use Ctrl + V to paste the URL address in the SOURCE textbox. Leave the other lines blank.

 MR_clip2 by Edmund, on Flickr

Have a try, can't hurt. There is another, more involved process to "imbed" a video from another source but unless you really need that I'll skip it.

Glad to see your work on updating your club's website Yes

Speaking of videos, I came across this neat newsreel film of the Marion 5600:

Can you imagine being there, all those people around the moving machine. Even standing in front of the crawler treads while it is crabbing forward? There was some kind of "oops" moment at 6:05!

I've been looking for a sound effects track to play in the background of my Hulett ore unloaders — this is IT! Smile

Cheers, Ed

Hi Guys!

Autumn says hello with the same nice weather last ummer sais goodbye with. We will be enjoying a pleasant day. The leaves start to change their color and the sky is filled with the calls of geese and herons heading south. Mother Nature at her best!

During my days on Bainbridge Island, WA. I was able to watch Orcas whenever I took the ferry to Seattle. Some sight! There is something truly royal to these animals!

Brent - trolley buses enjoy a degree of popularity in good old Europe. Salzburg in Austria still has quite an extensive network and so does Solingen in Germany. They are even more popular in waht was formerly the Soviet Union. I have my doubts that they are really an alternative to light rail systems as long as they share the road with other cars and trucks. The Chinese virtual rail tram looks promising - time will tell.

Have a great 1st day of Fall!

Happy times!

Hi Brent,

Dianne and I had a similar experience with Orcas a couple of years ago when we were staying at the Grizzly Bear Lodge on Minstrel Island just east of the northern tip of Vancouver Island. We were in a small (20') boat. We saw a pod of Orcas several hundred metres away so our guide George shut off the motor so we could sit and watch. We got more than our money's worth. The pod came straight towards us and they were being extremely vocal. Our guide said he had not heard a pod being so vocal all summer!

As they got closer one of them did some sky hopping (I hope I have that term correct - that is when they stand up with their heads well out of the water so they can see what is going on around them). They swam directly under our boat. If I had stepped over the side I could have stood on their backs (not that I would ever attempt to do something so stupid and disrespectful to them). That was truly a once in a lifetime moment! I'll see if I can post the video.

Dave

Good evening all it's another wet day here out West.

The wife dragged me to the big RV show today I was just sitting down in the train room ready to accomplish something fantastic I'm sure when the "I want to go to the RV show " came from the kitchen. We got there after lunch and the crowds had thinned so it was easy getting around and in and out of the RVs. I am lukewarm on getting another one so soon but the wife likes having it at all the dog shows. The things we do for our perfect beautiful wives.Laugh

This wet weather is really playing havoc with my Arthritis to the point I am ready to bring in the heavy-duty pain control. Hawaii is looking pretty good right now and my cousin is going for two months and wants us to come for at least part of the time. She is the one that lives in a stunning waterfront home on Vancouver Island with the assortment of watercraft that lets us go out and paddle among the Orca.

Jimmy, take the plunge and get that DCC system. I was delighted the day mine showed up.Laugh

Speaking of transit Vancouver has had a fully automated rapid transit system since the 1980s and it has proven very reliable. We also have a huge Trolley bus fleet that is quiet and clean.

Image result for vancouver trolley bus fleet

China has its new trackless streetcar system that I believe they have developed with Bombardier. I have heard rumours it is being looked at for a replacement for the trollies. Fully autonomous (driverless) no tracks makes for much lower operating cost.

John glad you enjoyed the hiking trip, did you do overnight backpacking or just day trips. I did a lot of multinight trips into the backcountry when I was a lot younger, nothin like it, I wish I was still up to doing it again. Those packs were pretty heavy on some of those trips. Did a few canoe trips as well, so just add a canoe to the load when doing portages. Laugh

Garry, Kevin and MLC, you guys look like a good time was had by all.Yes

So Henry, now you have been home awhile and had a chance to digest, what is the verdict on your trip. You should have stayed on in Vancouver and Victoria a few extra days seeing as you had come all this way. Lots left to do and see next time. All visitors should rent a Kayak and experience the silence of an early morning paddle. Do this three days in a row and you will know the meaning of being relaxed and rested.

Had a great time at the Greek restaurant last night. Not just our group but it seemed like all the patrons were of the same mindset and it turned into a bit of a party atmosphere. We had a couple of bottles of really nice red wine and I can't remember what the name of it was. I want to get some to stock the bar. We were at the restaurant for 3 hours so no wonder I can't remember.WhistlingLaugh

Hey everyone.  Good and bad news here.  Good news: The layout is progressing along, and I'm on a laptop again finally.

Bad news: my ipad may or may not be having issues.  It's either the cord or the charging port not playing nice.  I also keep getting outbid on ebay for NCE starter systems.  At this point, I'm thinking about just biting the bullet and buying a whole new system from tony's.

I have been indulging intom the history of streetcars in the UK. Just like in the US, most of the lines were abandoned in the late 1950s and 1960s and converted to bus routes.

I've read the auto manufacturers has something to do with that. Street cars were very quiet on the inside and smooth, but I lived a mile away from the tracks and they weren't quiet riding down the rails.  I was only on a "trackless trolley" once or twice, it was about the same inside, but no outside rail noise.  I don't know how they kept them on the cantenary.

Here we have rails to trails where former train or light rail lines are now walking or bike paths.  We are commited to adding more lanes to each highway in the hopes that will help. It does for about 3 months.

5 years ago I could drive to the grocery store and get all 5 red lights.  Now with the same number of red lights, it may take 12 red lights to get me there.

Fall arrives tomorrow with 90F temps.  So far we have had .15" of rain, last year 9".

Good Sunday Morning—

Late September and I actually ran the air conditioner for a few hours last evening. High was 90° (32.2) and 95% humidity.

Seems odd to be stacking firewood on such a warm (almost) fall day. Mrs. Pullman and I went to the clam bake at the volunteer fire department here in Hambden. Clams, HOT soup, soggy chicken on a 90° day! That might explain running the AC when we got home Confused

Good Morning!

Sunday again! It´s a little late for breakfast, so let´s call it a brunch! Make that my usual Sunday fare, Zoe - you know, crisp fried bacon, eggs, toast, butter, jams, OJ, stack of pancakes, maple syrup and a gallon of coffee, please!

Summer says goodbye with a sunny and pleasant day. Air traffic above our house has increased, as flocks of herons, cranes and geese are heading to their winter camps in Spain and Africa. While millions of ill-educated school children rally against man´s participation in the warming of the globe, Mother Nature has decided to send an early entrance into Winter with the first snow of the season in Mid-Sweden and the Alps. Always a pretty sight, those snow capped mountain peaks glistening in the sun!

I have been indulging intom the history of streetcars in the UK. Just like in the US, most of the lines were abandoned in the late 1950s and 1960s and converted to bus routes. Only 30 years later, trams see a massive resurrection in major British cities and the once extensive rail network is being build up again - at the cost of billions of British pounds. So much to the foresight of city councils in those days!

Here is a video on the trams of Liverpool.

I do like those double-decker trams!

Happy times!

Just got home from my trip hiking some of the national parks.  Grand Canyon was great, but the best for me was the Navajo Loop in Bryce Canyon Nat. Park.  I could not make it the whole way.  I think the 9,000 foot elevation really hindered me.

On the way home, I stopped for the night at Canon City, CO., near the Royal Gorge.  This was right across the street from my hotel:

Television question for the rest of the world.

.

At home I have bare bones cable service and internet. I am not often there, so all I need is an internet connection.

.

Most hotel rooms I stay in have 200+ channels, and that is all the exposure to them I need to know that they have no value to me.

.

Terms that have no meaning now:

.

Music Television (MTV)

Video Hits One (VH1)

The Learning Channel (TLC)

The Sci-Fi Channel (Now SYFY)

American Movie Classics (AMC)

The History Channel (H)

The Discovery Channel (DISC)

.

Only Home and Garden Television and The Golf Channel seem to have stayed true to their names. Nickelodeon and The Disney Channel are still about the same as they ever were. Cartoon Network is currently fantastic!

.

My old favorite, Comedy Central, now only seems to show South Park reruns and infomercials.

.

Anyway... Netflix and my DVD collection provide all the entertainment I need.

.

MLC and Kevin will be visiting my layout tomorrow and my friend's layout. Should be fun!

I am in Nashville now. Time for a shave, shower, and sleep.

When I worked for Sears Canada I was involved in several situations where security needed backup to contain shoplifters who weren't too happy about being caught. One day I was trying to pin down a young fellow who was fighting me with all his strength (and I was using all of mine too). Strange thing was that he wasn't trying hit me, but he was trying to reach inside his jacket. When the police searched him they found a pair of tailor's shears about 12" long in an inside pocket of his jacket. I don't know how that would have turned out if I had lost my grip on his arm!

According to the police officer, the tailor's shears were a popular commodity back then. That was when cassette tapes were being sold with elongated cardboard security sleeves to try to prevent shoplifting. The shears made a quick job of lopping the sleeves off so the cassettes could be pocketed.

That was the only time in my life that I have ever been in 'fisticuffs'. I hope to keep it that way!

Good afternoon from the soon to be raining West Coast.

Just finished a mega ride on the bike and have to cool down and hit the shower so here I am soaking wet. I put a towel on my chair to get the drips.

Isaac, I use to come home from school and turn the trains on as I also found it relaxing to have one running while doing other things.

As far as TV goes, we have bare-bones as all I need is Hockey through the Winter. We have Netflix, Crave and Amazon Prime that we get for free because we buy so much from Amazon. The kid did two Amazon Productions, "The Man In The High Castle" twice and "Loudermilk" they pay really well. I think we are going to dump Crave as we watched what we wanted to on it.

The kids can watch the three subscription services from Ottawa and Victoria and so can Grandpa as we pay for four viewers. They also have Firesticks but I don't know much about how that works as I have not watched them.

We have good competition in the internet/TV/phone biz so we have changed a few things over time but not much as they will always price match.

As far as kids behaving badly, I remember my two buddies and I climbing up from a secluded beach once and came across two idiots vandalizing some BCR property where the trail had to cross the tracks. They saw us and took off, we caught them, called the police and they were charged. We were just teenagers at the time. Another time three of us went for coffee and a shoplifter came running out of a store with the tubby manager in hot pursuit. We hopped in my truck and drove along behind him until he got tired and then we stopped, got out and chased him on foot and held him until the RCMP came. There were a few others like that as well over my 62 years. I could never stand by and watch someone stuff something into their bag and leave. I reported a shoplifter at Costco once and they took me to security where I pointed him out on the video and they knew the guy as a "regular" and just said thanks.

TF, I hope you have a great time at Disney. Our friends go there all the time even without the kids now they are grown, The wife loves it, him not so much but he loves her and that's good enough. It always cost them twice as much as they budget for, good thing they can afford it.Laugh

Vaping has killed a few young people quite suddenly up here. They are getting their lungs coated with some chemical and that does them in. Nasty stuff. The Government is moving fast to try and get it under control.

Lots to get done today and we are going to our favouite Greek restaurant with the gang tonight and even some of their kids are in town and coming along, it use to be fun when all our kids were still at home and Saturday night would roll around, there would be about ten adults and 14 kids over. The men would watch hockey and drink Rum, the women would talk dogs and drink wine and the kids would be in the pool or playing board games. Life was good....still is.

All the best to all.

How is it done 'over there'?  Is there competition or just one company or does the government supply the cable/internet?  Are other streaming services available like Hulu or Roku?  Pretty sure Netflix is all over the civilized world.

Well as someone who lives overseas in the Middle East And has previously live in south Asia I can tell you not much is different! Yeah we got almost all them streaming services and a gov’t internet/phone company and also many private ones. And there a lot of Netflix and such. Of an interesting note is that Netflix actually varies from country to country, so some thing that are not available on Netflix in the US are over here! Living overseas is fun (except the lack of LHSs)!

I see NWP SWP has a stereotypical teenage life full of drama and the like! I believe I’m a bit younger than Steven (high school junior), and I guess I’ve been spared some of that junk! Yes Vaping and the like are a big issue in my school too, though non of my friends do it (as far as I know...). Usually when people talk about that kind of stuff I just kind of don’t contribute. I am lucky that most of my friend kind of avoid that stuff!

Well when life is a little bit hard I usually just go up to my room and run my trains in circles! Usually calms me down and gets me excited about something! I hope everyone else is getting some good train running time in this weekend!

Regards, Isaac

In the last few years people are "cutting the cord" as it is called here, and buying the bare bones, local TV channels

Don't forget there's still OTA over-the-air digital programming available.

I don't "buy" bare-bones but I have an antenna (three, actually) and although I'm 35 miles from the transmitter I get excellent reception of 54 terrestrial channels without any monthly fee.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_terrestrial_television

I recently "wired-up" my father-in-law's TV with a $40 antenna and a $35 amplifier. He was paying $110/mo. cable for worthless trash now he gets his worthless trash for free Surprise

Good Evening!

I had a lengthy talk over the phone with our friend down south - the one we want to move with to Denmark. We all agreed that we should do as soon as possible, whch could be in Spring 2020. I can´t wait to turn my back and say goodbye to Germany. More and more Germans feel that we and the number of well trained and highly educated and qualified people leaving each year is higher than in the early 1900s!

Television question for the rest of the world. In the US we have a phone company, a couple satellite companies, a big cable TV company and many smaller companies. None are government owned.

We have a big nationwide operating, privately owned cable TV company and a number of local ones. They usually offer different packages, including subscription based services and pay-per-view services. Netflix is gaining market share, but  the other services you mention in your post are largely unknown. Amazon Prime is one of the subscription based services, but there may be others I am not aware of. We don´t watch TV and our TV set has not been connected since 4 years. There are  a number of stations I can get through the Internet, but as these are mainly the government run stations, I don´t care for them. I don´t need propaganda on my screen.

Happy times!

Sounds good to me Kevin. That is so kind of you.  I think I'll buy.

This is one of Judy's dreams she has always dreamed about from childhood.  She never made it there.

I will fulfill it for her.  I always like to give my Judy a big Christmas present.

I will be in contact with you Kevin.

Thank you

My Judy just informed me she has never been to Disneyland.

Kevin let me know in a previous post that is in California.

I am going to be smart this year and get to where I'm going before Christmas so the town is not closed like last year in Branson Missouri.

I like to drive out of winter but I will drop off the rental car and fly back home this time.

I will be in Kevin's home state of Florida for Christmas this year.

Maybe trains in Europe don't get pelted with rocks by morons the way they do in North America and these auto carriers are all they need. The terrain they cross is also a factor. Rocks, branches and a whole host of other projectiles that nature can throw at trains as they venture thousands of KM across the country may have something to do with it. Also having to remove two feet of snow before they can be unloaded cost money.

Such things don´t happen here. Just imagine Mother Nature throwing whatever at a highspeed train barreling down the track at 200mph. Cars are shipped throughout Europe in these carriers and damage is literally unheard of.

Happy times!

I must say I was shocked to see open auto racks.

A guy who bought a private rail car told me that windows have to be 1" bullet proof glass.  What happens if they miss the window and shoot low? Kim Jong Un's passenger car may be bullet proof but private varnish is not.

The ones above seem a little to skimpy...

I doubt that Daimler Benz or BMW would ship their quite expensive cars with them if they were "skimpy". They are widely used in continental Europe and are actually quite sturdy.
