 Eveing Diners

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer and a dog treat.

Garry Happy B-Day and may you have many more!

Ed you are right Cussler character was named Dirk Pitt. When we meet our new dog his given name by the rescue was Pop Corn? Then we found out his given name was Pip by the family that turned him in. I was calling Dirk Pitt but as a compromise to my wife I started calling him Dirk Pip.

I took my motorcycle in today to get a custom saddle. I scheduled the appointment over two months ago, the guy is that backed up. (Actually, his name is really Guy.) Apparently he does custom saddles for custom bikes from all over the US and Canada. The factory saddle was good for about an hour, then it got uncomfortable. I will get the bike back on Thursday with foam but no cover. I will take it out for a longer ride on just the foam on Saturday, then the saddle guy will make any adjustments, and cover it. I am going with a dark tan instead of black. It should look pretty cool.

Good Afternoon,

A cool day here, only about 60F right now but supposed to get up to 70F tomorrow which is nice for us this time of year.

Ken, in England, Pip is a short/nickname for Phillip as in Mike for Michael. Not very common here that is for sure.

I certainly didn't have much for car memories when I was in school. My first car was a '61 Bug when I was in second year at Uni. After I graduated I bought a new Vega, lucky me. My only defence is that it was before all of the problems became known. Once I got into sailing all my spare, and then some, resources went into boats. At the boat club parking lot in Gimli you could tell the sailors by the generally crappy cars. I was 53 when I got my first nice car, a new 2000 Volvo S70.

Dave, we still have the nest of Ospreys. I checked today and there are still 2 young ones but they look close to fledging.

Tomorrow is birding and breakfast at the local sanctuary. It means getting up at 5 so will be an early night for me. Hope we see a few warblers.

I called our phone company this morning as they were supposed to have a service guy here. I was informed that the problem is with their cable somewhere( not on my property) and it could take up to a week to fix. It is working right now but it could go out again at any minute.

Well time to get something to eat. I'll bet Henry is dining in fine style on the Rocky Mountaineer. I wonder if they stop in Revelstoke, a former CP division point. There is a great RR museum there with a Mikado indoors.

Ulrich, I envy you with all of your travels. You have seen many places I will see only in pictures.

Most of my travelling was done on business with very little time to get a taste of the land. Hotels are hotels, airports are airports - regardless of where they are. Only the food varies - and only slightly, if you eat in the "renowned" places.

Nothing to be envious about.

Happy times!

We haven't seen the Ospreys that nest just north of us for a couple of weeks. The nesting platform is right beside the highway, and we travel that route frequently, so I think they have 'flown the coup'.

If Ospreys you want to see, you cannot beat the coast line around Camp LeJeune!

Kevin, high school 35 years ago and you're old?  Just wait.  I just got invited to our high school's 50th.  Now that's old!

Ed, Hopper's my favorite artist, and the diner in "Nighthawks" is my favorite of all his paintings.  I have seen only a few of his works in museums, but his style and his subjects all appeal to me for some reason.

Ulrich, I envy you with all of your travels.  You have seen many places I will see only in pictures.

Congratulations on all the milestones:  Harrison-birthday, Garry-birthday, anniversary, Kevin-computer posts, Ken-new dog.

I don't have any milestones to report.  Another great day of retirement and working on the railroad.  I have to cut the grass, but I'm practicing not complaining about it.  I love cutting grass, I love cutting grass, I love cutting grass... it's not working yet.

Have a great day, everyone!

Wow congratulations Kevin on 5000 posts!

I haven’t really been on the forums much in the past two months, but we’re I am school has started again and that means a more regular schedule. Somehow this equals more time on the forums, even if I have less free time it seems... not qui sure how that works!

Ya, I'm trying to learn when to shut my mouth. When I first started to post I considered myself to be a font of information! It took being corrected for more than a few gaffes for me to realize that I need to restrict my offerings of advice to only those situations where I was certain that I knew what I was talking about. I'm not sure that I have fully learned that lesson yet!Embarrassed

I think I too learmed the same lesson as Dave. I feel like I did have to learn that you can post on every thread! Initiatlly I posted everywhere and found sometimes my posts lacked value and contained inaccuracies. Now I try to give some though before I post as to think if the post contains some value. At the same time however I do think we do need to post some less helpful comments to help keep the forums alive and give others with more nowledge somewhere to start.

As a quick update in the past few weeks I’ve added some boards to the 4x8 board I use as a train table to keep it from warping. I am somewhat excited as this will eventually allow me to add more feeder wires to improve the operation of my layout.

Spain is an interesting place to put the Diner! I don’t much about Spain but I do know it’s the origin of the Amtrak Cascades Talgo trains! I do really like those corridor trains!

Congratulations! Five thousand posts in 2 1/2 years is nothing to sneeze at! I'm at 9900 posts in 13 years and I thought I was talkative!

.

I am actually pretty quiet in here. Back on the WARSEER Wargaming Forum I would average 20-30 posts a day. I used to run tournaments for Warhammer, Flames Of War, and Johnny Reb. I was considered a pretty good source of rules intepretations (most of the time). And as a multiple award-winning figure painter, I had a lot to say about that too.

.

I have calmed down a lot in here.

.

Boy-Oh-Boy, me too. When I joined this forum I had been a scale model railroader for 35 years, worked in a hobby shop (Aardvark's Model Trains in Nashville), had a railroad design/construction company, built five home layouts, and two club layouts. I have modeled in both HO and N scale. I operated on lots of layouts in three states, helped build a 4-4-2 live steam locmotive, and restored a FM speeder.

.

I thought I was an expert.

.

Nope, I learned quick I don't know squat, and when it comes to modelling, I am a hack at best.

Harrison (I hope) Happy B-Day Getting old sucks.

York I still have a car I had in High School, 1968 Road Runner that Mom and Dad bought when I was 12 years old.

Life with Dirk Pip the American Eskimo. Yes I am a Clive Clusser fan and Pip by it self sounded to feminine to me! Drik Pip sounds good to him and I, wife hates it so it is a win win. Laugh

Funny Dirk Pip story. He would not eat the food the rescue sent home with him. He would eat the food that Sparike left behind but not his? People food, well Yes and because Sparkie could not anything besides is speical food we gave in a little to Dirk Pip.

So tonight I trick him. I acted like I was eating his food. Held it up to my mouth made yum, yum sounds then offred it to him and he ate it! After about 5 times I gave him the bowl and he cleaned it out! Big Smile All so no more people food! Yea we knew we should not have but Sparkie could not even have dog treats with his stomach problems.

 Later, none smoking Ken

Good Morning,

Henry, you are experiencing normal weather for Calgary at this time of year. It is supposed to be in high '60s and sunny in Vancouver this week which is normal for there right now. Iced tea in Canada means the sweet version, often with a little lemon. If you order tea in a restaurant you will get the hot version as it is far more popular than cold.

Hope MTS can figure out what is happening with the phone/internet line. It goes out completely at times and then is fine. I can't see how it could be a wire as it would be the same all the time if the connection was broken somewhere.

Well time for lunch.

Good morning on Labor Day.  Probably one of my favorite holidays -- not because it's Labor Day, but because each year we had started school about 2 or 3 weeks before, and Labor Day was a great day off to catch your breath.

I'm a little jealous of those of you with fond car memories from your youth.  I don't have any of those.  I drove my parents family car through high school, did without a car in college, and finally bought a $900 Toyota when I started work.  I sold that Toyota 5 years later for $15 to a guy who wanted the seats.

Our dream cars were a Chevelle or GTO.  To have a Barracuda, Mustang, or Road Runner were too above us to even dream about.

The only thing in Spain I'd really like to see is some of the Gaudi architecture in Barcelona.  It always reminded me of melted wax.

Water Level Route
Some of the food was very good, some, not so much

My late uncle, who was among the first Germans to tour Spain after WW II, always said, that one of the main dishes in Spain, Paella, consists of what tide has brought in the night before, served on rice. To be honest, I am not into that stuff, but there are lots of other nice things to eat in Spain, like the famous Pata Negra ham, or Manchego cheese. I am especially fond of the fresh tomatoes and other vegetables. My favourite place is "Casa Paco"  on the Plaza Puerta Cerrada, 11 in Madrid, one of the best places in the world for steaks, but only if the torero was lucky to get the bull and not vice versa.

Happy times!

Buenos dias, mis otros compañeros! Como estaís?

Today's traditional breakfast item:

Image result for Café con leche.

This is not just any coffee my friends. This strong coffee with frothy hot milk. Since the Spanish do not usually indulge in a heavy breakfast, we will stick with these:

Image result for common spanish breakfast

Today's railroad item is our last highspeed train for this month's diner (from me at least).

Image result for talgo s102

Someone already beat me to it in mentioning this train, but I'll type a few tidbits anyway. Its called a talgo s102 and I have to say it looks rather ugly, at the very least. I therefore dub it "duckbill express."  This is the slightly older cousin of yesterday's train. It was intruduced in 2005 with the boast of being able to achieve 217 MPH. According to my research, it can handle 318 passengers. If you compare all of this to yesterday's train, you can see why the other one is definitely better. From what I can tell, this unit was the result of a joint effort between Bombadier and Talgo (like the concorde concept).

And because this IS a MRR forum, we definitely need some of that to start our week. Enjoy this cab ride on a Spanish MRR.

I'm beginning to realize that Windows 10 and sound decoders have a lot in common. There are so many things you have to change in order to get them to work the way you want.

I can't believe you guys did this to me!  Spain!  Seriously?!  Now I'm going to have to open some sort of photo share account so I can post pics.  Not only have I been there to visit family (exchange student), but we made it to the railroad museum in Madrid to boot!  I think I have pictures of half the stuff Ulrich posted.  Egads, another thing on the "To do" list....

Seriously though, it is a neat country but HOT in the summer.  Wonderful people.  Warm and welcoming.  Some of the food was very good, some, not so much.  That's probably true of just about everywhere though.  I'll try to find time later this week to set up an account to share some pics.

Cheers!
