Evening Diners.

Had a great weekend with family.  Good food, good company, and festive evenings...... "Let the Good Times Roll"

I got a chance to meet saronaterry this afternoon.  Terry and his lovely wife live off a beautiful lake in Northern Wisconsin.  The type of place you visit and dont ever want to leave, .....he doesn't have to,  you're a lucky man Terry!

Terry's layout was really cool.  It went around the entire perimeter of the basement.  It had two peninsulas, a walk-in bay and a separate staging room with under layout departure and returns.  His layout was impressive to say the least and I had a lot of fun.

Terry and TF,  a couple of happy faces after running trains.

I made it to the roundhouse my friend.  The map you drew for me worked good.

Thanks for inviting me to your beautiful home.  I had a blast running trains with you today.

Good evening, Folks—

I hope everyone enjoyed a fine weekend. I met with some friends at the Painesville, Ohio, New York Central (LS&MS Ry.) Depot, 29.1 railroad miles east of Cleveland. Weather was perfect and I was glad to see a nice display that these dedicated people put together.

 Painesville_NYCS by Edmund, on Flickr

The American Legion "999" locomotive was used in many parades in the Cleveland area. I rember seeing it often as a youngster. It was built by the shop forces at the Collinwood backshops.

Had two eastbound freights pass by during the visit:

They have a B&O I-5 caboose on the grounds. Here's one for the "prototype for everything" department!

"Who ever heard of cutting away part of the framework for more wheel clearance! The real railroads never did that." Laugh

One gentleman there had some cast aluminum builders' plates for sale. I picked up a Lima one and another from a PRR I1sa. Had a great time chatting about "old railroad days" around the Cleveland area.

Cheers, Ed

In a week we will be headed off to Banff and the Rocky Mountaineer.  Any advice on what to see in Vancover would be appreciated.

We spent much of the day writing a doomsday letter to my son.  One of my close friends died earlier this year and his wife was clueless as to passwords, bank accounts, insurance policies, important papers, online stuff, etc.  Dale Earnhardt Jr's recent brush with death in a plane crash enforced the need to get this done.

We visited my wife's niece.  She and her husband both have good jobs, but still huge student debt, two mortgages, not much savings, and 4 kids.  Yet they are selling one of their kids bikes for $350 so they can buy him a $1,000 bike and buying a huge conversion van (another big loan) because they have to take the kids skiing in Colorado and vacationing in the Outer Banks.

It's nice to make memories for the kids but that's not the way I was raised.  I think I need to get her a copy of the Millionaire Next Door.  The theme of that book is how to live within your means.

One of my grand nieces is on the 'developmental volley ball team'   There are only so many people that can be on a team and if you don't make the cut, you get a ribbon and a place on the developmental team.  Zip it!

 Afternoon Diners

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer please.

Got the new printer up and working! Yes What worried me the most is my CD and DVD players are junk. Old ribbon style and had to force the CD player open to install the drivers. All that got load was the drivers and not all of the extra junk they think you need.

Not crazy about it's ergonomic for my desk. Where I load the paper my turnout  switches are in the way. So the printer is sitting on top of my PCM Big Boy Box. Works well and cannot beat the prices.

Wife found a American Eskimo she wants? She heard about him but has never seen him? Partners For Pet's has him. She wants to go meet him Thursday. Wants me to do a on line appaction tonight?

 Trains are running great.

 Later none smoking Ken

Good morning from my Southern Command

we are in Mississippi this weekend a well known icon of Oxford Ms passed away this past week . They are having a “second line” New Orleans style memorial for him today so we came down to go to that.

good thing we came anyway the dehumidifier had a full bucket at the house. It is normally drained by a hose. Some creature had stuck an acorn in the end of the drain hose out in the yard causing a clog. I had to cut the end of the hose off to remove the acorn. All water came wooshing out of the hose. At least the failsafe is it will fill the bucket and shut off and not leak all over the floor If the hose clogs.

This is the first time hose has clogged since I put it in

We will be returning to KY later this evening.

Good morning ....

Ken ..... It is probably best to wait a while before getting another dog. You and your wife are still mourning the loss of Sparkie.

Ulrich .... Thanks for posting about a very interesting locomotive type.

John / York 1 ..... Our church has donuts, too, but I still have a small breakfast when  I get up anyhow.

Today, will be like many Sundays for us. We attend church, and then we drive to Nashville to visit Shelley's family. We will see her Mom who continues to be in a nursing home. Also, our brother in law in Nashville has been in the hospital with heart disease, and we hope to visit him. The rest of the Nashville family is well.

Everybody : ... Have a good Sunday.

Good morning!  No breakfast this morning.  I'll have doughnuts at church.

A nice day predicted.  We may actually get through a day without rain.  It would be nice to see the sun again.

Ken, my wife is the same.  In fact, in September I'm going on a week-long trip to some national parks by myself.  My wife can't leave the dog at the kennel and wants to stay home with Daisy the Dachshund.  I'm actually looking forward to it.  I can eat where I want, stay where I want, drive early in the morning when I want, etc.  Still ... we've been married over 40 years and we've never done this.  It will be an experience.

I hope everyone has a nice and restful Sunday.

Good Morning!

Sunday - time for that big and hearty breakfast of crisp fried bacon, scrambled eggs, toast, butter, jams, pancakes, maple syrup, OJ and coffee, lots of coffee, please!

Another sunny day is just starting. I have the windows wide open to let the fresh morning air into the room - nice!

Russ - having a tooth pulled is no fun, but I am sure all will go well!

Let´s take a look at another iconic British steam locomotive today, this time one running on slim rails.

The Ffestiniog Railway is a narrow gauge line in northern Wales. The line was constructed between 1833 and 1836 to transport slate from the quarries around the inland town of Blaenau Ffestiniog to the coastal town of Porthmadog where it was loaded onto ships. The railway was graded so that loaded wagons could be run by gravity downhill all the way from Blaenau Ffestiniog to the port. The empty wagons were hauled back up by horses, which travelled down in special 'dandy' wagons. In 1863, steam engines were introduced on the line. These were little 0-4-0 saddle tank engines built by George England and Co. Official passenger services were introduced in 1865. A few years later, these engines proved to be too weak for the growing loads. In 1869, the line's first double Fairlie articulated locomotive was introduced and these double-ended machines have since become one of the most widely recognised features of the railway.

A Fairlie is a type of articulated steam locomotive that has the driving wheels on bogies. The locomotive may be double-ended (a double Fairlie) or single ended (a single Fairlie). Fairlies are most associated with the Ffestiniog Railway, which mainly operates Double-Fairlies (and one single Fairlie engine). A Double Fairlie is basically two single Fairlies "bolted together" back to back. It has two fire boxes, but single controls.

Other than a rather crude white metal kit in OO9 gauge and a very elaborate etched brass kit in O16.5 gauge from EDM, there are no RTR locos yet in the market. However, Peco has announced, that these quirky little engines will be made in a cooperation with Kato, being released in 2020, together with the 0-4-0 ST George England engines. The gauge is OO9, that´s 1/76 sacle on 9mm track.

I think I have to start putting some money aside!

Happy times!

Russ,

I hope the dental work goes well, and I really hope the hip replacements work for you. My family doctor recently told me that both my hips are shot. The deterioration is at a level 4 out of 5. I'm not too enthused about having them done in the near future, although I admit my left hip can be pretty miserable some nights. During the day when I am sitting or walking they don't bother me at all.

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer please.

 Got the front yard cut.

Wife is really bumming about wanting another American Eskimo. She found the one she wanted and sizes was right at 16 pounds. Luckly he had all ready found is forever home! I think she will take anything at this point. Me, I am not ready for another pet. Yes I would like another 4 legged friend, but just not right now. Sparkie has only been across Rainbow Bridge for 9 days. Plus I would like to visit Ed. Wife will not put a dog in a kennel because they will cause them to die! Yes wife is nuts.

 None smoking Ken posting again.

Good Evening, Crew! Not much mrr work happening on my end right now. I did find a set of out-of-production Microscale Erie RR ALCO decals for an RS2/3 on eBay that I'll get for an undec model project. Yeah It will be an important piece of motive power on my new layout. Next Wednesday I have to go to the VA Hospital in Cleveland to haive two of my lower teeth pulled because of a small but chronic infection under them. Once that's healed, I should be cleared for a date for my hip replacement surgery. I've already picked out a couple of Erie kits to build while I'm recovering, so I'll put together a couple of trays with tools, parts, handrail and brake line wire, etc. to keep me busy at the dining room table since I won't be able to use the stairs to the basement. Smile, Wink & Grin Have a great weekend, everyone!

Dave - I am sure there will be other equally suitable properties on the market soon. However, this was a near perfect fit in terms of price, layout, condition and location.

The town where my MIL´s property is located, is in desperate search for "undeveloped" real estate, to put up home for our "new" citizens. My MIL´s property is adjacent to a piece of land ideal for a bew subdivision, but it would be the "wrong" kind of people benefitting from developing it, hence the council´s decision. I think I should accept my fate and drop the plan of moving to Denmark and just try to stay alive in an environment turning less and less freindly, especially to older folks.

On the heart issue - I am improving, but still my condition is not what it should be. At least I can now climb a flight of stairs without losing my steam completely.

Happy times!

Another blow to our moving plans - the house we had set our eyes (and hearts) on has been sold. Wthout the necessary financial backing, we could not submit a bid on it to keep it reserved. Gone it is!

That's unfortunate Ulrich. When we get our hearts set on something it is very hard when things don't go the way we want. However, i doubt that that house was the only property of its kind on the market in Denmark. Keep looking!!

I must say how disappointed I was to hear that the bureaucracy has fouled up your plans to subdivide Petra's inherited property.

Don't lose sight of your goals! Keep at it!

By the way, how are you feeling these days after your heart surgery? I hope that you are doing much better.

Good Morning!

Nature paints the most wonderful pictures! I just watched the sunrise with an explosion of colors ranging from dark red to silver blue. Beautiful!

Anotzer blow to our moving plans - the house we had set our eyes (and hearts) on has been sold. Wthout the necessary financial backing, we could not submit a bid on it to keep it reserved. Gone it is!

Let´s continue with another iconic British steam engine.

The London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) Coronation Class is a class of express passenger steam locomotives designed by William Stanier. They were an enlarged and improved version of his previous design, the LMS Princess Royal Class. The locomotives were specifically designed for power as it was intended to use them on express services between London Euston and Glasgow Central; their duties were to include the hauling of a proposed non-stop express, subsequently named the Coronation Scot. The first ten locomotives of the Coronation class were built in a streamlined form in 1937 by the addition of a steel streamlined casing. Five of these ten were specifically set aside to pull the Coronation Scot. Although a later batch of five unstreamlined locomotives was produced in 1938, most of the ensuing Coronation class were outshopped as streamliners. Eventually, from 1944 to 1949, all new engines would be built in unstreamlined form and all the streamliners would have their casings removed. The very last of the 38 locomotives was completed in 1948. The Coronation class was probably painted in more styles of livery than any other engine class, seven in the LMS era up to 1947 and five more during the British Railways era from 1948 onwards. That does not mean that all 38 locomotives were painted in all these different styles; many were specific to just a few engines. The only style that all 38 bore was the British Railways lined Brunswick Green and the entire class was turned out thus between 1955 and 1958. No. 6220 Coronation held the British steam speed record between 1937 and 1939.

The Coronation Class steam locomotives are available in N scale as well as OO scale.

N scale version from Graham Farish (Bachmann) - unstreamlined version only:

OO Scale version (both streamlined and unstreamlined versions) from Hornby:

Good Evening,

A nice, sunny day here and supposed to be nice tomorrow too with temps in low '80s. After that rain which we really need.

Ulrich, sorry to hear your moving plans are running into snags.

Tonight I took my wife out for dinner as it is her birthday tomorrow. We had originally planned on Saturday but the weather was supposed to be rainy so we changed the day. The weather is important as we wanted to eat out on the patio at this particular place. Anyway, we did have a great meal.

Nothing new on the train front. I did get the latest copy of Classic Trains the other day and will read it Sunday, the rainy day. That is my favourite magazine.

Good evening all.

Zoe - A RBF please. Thanks.

Jimmy - Some progress on the layout is better than none. Keep it up. Congrats again on the new employment.

Terry - Belated condolences on losing the puppy.

Ulrich - Thanks for all the neat vids of the Brit steamers. Seems like that last GWR steamer is familiar from something? I just can’t quite figure why...

Weather - Cooler and less humid. I like it! High temp of 72F today, with lots of sun, but a nice breeze as well.

W*^k - Had a customer threaten to call the police on me. Why? Well, it’s kinda complicated, but I told her "no".....

See, my main duty is delivery driver for the auto parts sales. In addition, the owner rents U-haul trucks and trailers. Had a lady come in looking to rent a truck.

As it was lunch break rotation time, it was only the owner and myself in the store. As the owner was in the middle of finding a part for a different customer, I was handling the truck rental.

It all was going great, until I got to the point where I needed the customers drivers license to complete that part of the rental. (Last thing before payment.) It is here that it all went wrong.

Her license was expired by several months. This is a huge problem, as that means that she is not legally allowed to rent the truck, as she can not legally drive the truck....

She wanted me to just ignore that rule, and rent it to her anyways. It is here that I said "no", as "I have to follow the rules, or I lose my job." It is here that she asked if she should then call the police. (Why? Who knows... What exactly did she think that would accomplish anyway? Scare me into giving in?) My response was, "Go right ahead. If you wish to call them, be my guest. Call them." (The owner had to stifle a laugh.)

In a way, I almost wish she did follow through and do just that... After all, she drove herself there. I think it might have been quite the show, having the police show up to field her complaint that I would not rent a 26’ Box truck to someone who did not have a valid drivers license, and then finding out that she had drove herself to the store... Whistling

But, she did not. It was a bluff. And I called it. (Maybe she thought my refusal was a bluff? I don’t bluff when I have the winning hand...)

Trains - Got caught twice by the same local today. (Not that I’m complaining.) Nothing to report on models though.

Hope all are well, and enjoy the night!

Good news everyone, I got the first section of my layout started

obviously everything is just laid out to see how everything fits out, but it's a start.

These are the opinions of an under 35 , from the east end of, and modeling, the same section of the Wheeling and Lake Erie railway.  As well as a freelanced road (Austinville and Dynamite City railroad).

Terry Thank you for your thoughts and sorry to hear about your pup!

Guess I am a officaly a Curmudgeon! Big Smile ConfusedConfused Daughter bought me a new printer for my last birthday. While I could stand to have one, I did not want one. All so a Fax machine, don't need that, WFI anf have no idea how to set that up. I do have a Router but son in law set that up while I was at work so I am clue less.

They want 3 months of statements for ever bill I have inculding Loans and Credit Cards? That is why I now have need for a printer. Bill's I get in the mail I sherd as soon as they are paid. CC statments are all electronic so I have to print them.

Done!

You are very kind,Garry! I've seen your work also! Way above my abilities!

Ulrich,I truly hope your situation improves.

I was sad to hear about Sparkie, Ken. Our 8 Mo old pup was hit by a car last month. SWMBO was a wreck, blamed herself. We have since adopted a 4yo Great Pyrennes(sp)/Golden retriever mix from a high-kill shelter in Texas. Life is better!!

I've been thinning out the rolling stock that doesn't fit so well. Mostly UP/ATSF and some eastern and NE roads. I got them as train fillers off of evil bay. Most have KD -like couplers, metal KD wheels, some weathered and will all need some sort of tune-up. Some Athearn/Clones, bachman/ tyco, etc.Free to a good home.

Let me know in a pm.
