Heartland Division CB&Q Howdy .... I have never been in a hurricane, and that is fine with me. .... One of the worst storms here was the 2009 ice storm which broke all of the trees. Most of western KY lost power. We were stranded because roads were completely blocked by massive amounts of broken trees. We had no power, no land line phone, no cell phone, and no county water. Power was not restored at our house for 9 days, and that was better than other locations where it took weeks to restore power. Actually, I should not say I was never in a hurricane, because remnants of Katrina came this far north causing a lot of damage. It cuased one drowning about 40 miles from here. Everybody ..... Have a nice Friday.

Yes that ice storm was a biggy, we also got hit the Fall before by the remnants of IKE. It was weird and downgraded to to depression then strengthened over Arkansas into a hurricane and ran over us in Western KY. I had more tree damage from Ike than from the ice storm. I moved away form the gulf to get away from hurricanes and had damage from a hurricane here in KY.

Good Afternoon!
Those of you in the path of the coming hurricane, please stay safe!
I have no imagination what it is liuke being hit by a hurricane. We have some bad storms in our neck of the woods, but damage is nothing compared to what we see in the news about the damage done by hurricanes at your end of the Big Pond! I hope everything goes well!
I am keeping a low profile - the weather nearly does me in. I feel bad - worse than before my surgery. I hope I´ll be improving soon!
August is coming to an end tomorrow - time to present a last video of steam in Britain. Enjoy a recent film of "Steam in the West Highlands"!
May I raise the question where the Diner will be located in the upcoming month and who will volunteer to facilitate the move?

I did a little more research on quad contusions and one of the recommended treatments is compression. I mentioned this to my daughter who said, "I have a thigh compression sleeve you can try." In the words of the immortal Frank Barone, "Holy Cr@p!" The pain is not gone, but now I can stand without having my leg scream at me. I just ordered my own thigh sleeve and one for my knee -- good ol' Amazon same-day delivery.

Hey all, hope all are well
It's been a roller coaster week for me.
Sunday: My youngest cat passed away in the night. She was ill with a respirtory issue she'd always have from being born outside. At least she isn't in any pain
Monday: got the confirmation I passed the drug screening test, and I start work this coming tuesday. glad to be getting a paycheck again.
Tuesday: Did some more cleaning at the house and outside. Especially putting fill in for where my wooden gutters were- previous owner put these wood channels in, thinking it would divert water from the basement.
Weds: Nothing really happened
Thurs: Tried photographing Amtrak, but I was stuck in a 15 MINUTE traffic jam which nearly overheated my truck from where I was stopped- halfway up a 6% grade. Yeah, I wasn't happy about that. But, I ended up getting a message via facebook saying that my photography from my town's 250th Celebration will be featured in a regional magazine! Woot, I'm finally printed somewhere.
Friday: Caught a NS heritage unit-the Lackawanna. It was leading and had the nose lit perfectly. I also managed to get a photo of it, with a mother and baby doe deer crossing in front of it- the loco was stopped. I'll share that one later if theres some interest.

Hi, Jimmy—
Sorry to hear of your cat passing. Never a pleasant thing to deal with.
Glad you're on your way to starting your new job. I hope it works out very well for you and the photos being published, too. Something to be proud of.
I was thinking of your book collection. I have two duplicates and wondered if you have either of these books which feature railroads of your area:

If you don't have either of these books send me an address via PM and I'll mail them to you. I think it is a great thing for someone to have a nice library.

Jimmy, sorry to hear about your cat.

For fellow weather junkies, I found a website: spaghettimodels.com that has a lot of neat tools on it. He must be retired because he does live updates through the day on his facebook page.
He's an amateur, but it's not like the pro's are all that great. He thinks the rainfall could be huge.
I drove through SC the year the hurricaine his Charleston. For 70 miles there were no leaves on the trees, and hundreds of trees that had falled on the shoulder or roadway of I-95

It was Katrina Garry that chased the rest of Judy's family out of New Orleans. Judy used to live down there a lot of years ago.
We helped her brother Dave move out of New Orleans right before the storm. He had been thinking about it and decided that was a good time to leave before Katrina hit.
He was a professional painter down there. His ladder flipped sideways through the side of a house where they had no studs behind the sheathing and he fell to the ground and hurt his back really bad. He somewhat recovered but never enough. It was time for him to go home. We moved him back up to Hayward Wisconsin by his mom's. He is on a disability now.
My other brother-in-law Steve followed after Katrina. He moved from Gretna, New Orleans back to Antigo Wisconsin where he grew up.
Hurricanes are nasty stuff and they seem to be getting a lot more prevalent.

Pretty Boring day over all. Got the SS junk done and mailed. Wife wanted to send it Priority Mail and it is going a whole 14 miles. Set me back $25.50. Could have sent it 3 day express for $7.50 but she would have nagged the saving from my flesh! She cannot do much, but she is a world class nagger and worry wort.

I don't know if there's any railroads there but we all get plenty of that around here on a normal basis and Railroad pictures can always be posted in September's Diner too.
From the pictures the Bear has shown, Beautiful. I don't know about you guys but I would like to see more. Well there's my vote. Anymore?

I'll second that. I saw a TV program about a Kiwi Rail train trip that looked great.

thanks for the condolences all.
speaking of weather, I've actually ridden out a tropical storm(Superstorm sandy remnants- it was still a tropical storm when it passed over Pittsburgh), a microburst (2002 microburst that hit Kennywood Park in Pittsburgh), and almost had a tornado drop on my house. I've been through thundersnow, and driven through a tornadic cell by accident.
Might I humbly suggest, as proposed earlier, Spain?
I'm beginning to realize that Windows 10 and sound decoders have a lot in common. There are so many things you have to change in order to get them to work the way you want.
I'll third the suggestion of NZ, I love the place and hope to have another visit before I croak. My sister gets there every year to judge dog shows, as well as Australia, she makes a circuit out of it and often has a stop in Asia as well.
Good evening from perfectville.
The kids both leave on Sunday for University. I will miss them a lot. We will drop the kid at the airport at 0700hrs for his trip to Ottawa and head right to the ferry to deliver my sweet pea to Victoria where she will study science. She is still interested in being a medical examiner but I am sure that will change if experience with all the other kids I know is any indication. I am glad we have a P/U truck as she is taking a lot of stuff to make it feel like home.
The deadline for the TV offer to the kid came and went. Can't name the show but it was a biggie. They had no firm dates and could not settle a contract so it was back to school for him, which is fine. The money was well worth taking the time off, but at the same time, he could have lost a whole year waiting, not going to happen.
My daughter found out she has a large residence all to herself at University as a result of her grades and got an additional $6800.00 in grants as well. That puts us in the black as far as cost go for their education. I love my kids what can I say.
I am watching the news on the hurricane and just shake my head. I can't believe people are so ill-prepared for such an event. "THE STORES ARE OUT OF WATER!" Whatever happened to getting 5 gal water jugs and turning on the tap to fill them up. I have 150 litres of water stored at all times, along with an abundance of freeze-dried rations and a means to cook it all. The canned food in the house alone would get us through a disaster. I just don't know, people create their own luck.
Got my second Royal Hudson back from Rapido that had failed and it blew up again, so it is back in the mail. They send me a shipping label so it is not costing me anything. The first one has run like a top since I got it back. I am a little leary of ordering two of the next offering if I have to go through this again. Oh well, you spend your money and takes your chances, can't take it with me.
Went to White Rock and had fish and chips on the beach yesterday, it was a beautiful two train night. White Rock is the stand-in for the New England states in a lot of movies and TV shows that are filmed here. Take a Google Earth stroll and you will see why. We have gone out a lot this Summer to restaurants as we did not go on vacation this year and it is a good way to have quality family time.
The kid was taking almost a full online course load this summer and couldn't do any movie or TV work as he couldn't commit to so much time. So one day I got him to go into Safeway to pick up a couple of things and he saw a help wanted sign. He went and said he could work a couple of days a week and they hired him on the spot. He was working the 1600hrs to 2400hrs shift and noticed all the money the store was losing from either no prices or the wrong prices entered in the computer system. So late in the evening if it was slow he would enter all the correct pricing into the system. It instantly made a difference to the bottom line and the store manager called him in and asked how he knew how to do it. The kid said they were given laptops starting in grade 4 and were taught computer coding as well starting then, it was easy peasy. He was made shift manager and given a $10.00 an hour raise to boot. He also had to work 5 days a week but managed to attend all the online interactive lectures that he needed to. Some people make their own luck.
After we drop my daughter off at her new digs we are going to spend three days house hunting on Vancouver Island, who knows what will happen with that. We are also shopping for a new trailer which also means a new truck as ours is 20 years old. Could be an expensive fall season. I want all the bells and whistles on a new truck as it is likely to be my last. Being 62, if I keep this one 20 years I'll be dead. Most of the vehicles I have owned were new and went to the scrap heap when I was done with them, I am their forever home. The wife wants to head South and do the dog show circuit in warmer climes. Arizona, California here we come.
Have to go upcountry in the middle of September to attend the funeral of my wife's really cool uncle. He was in the Queen's own guard and was one of those guys that stood motionless in front of Buckingham Palace no matter how many beautiful girls would lift their shirts up in front of him, at least that is what he would say. He loved my trains.
Big busy week ahead, I hope I survive. Stay safe in the big storm I'll be thinking of you.
An overabundance of pushers being taken back down the hill.
All the best to all.

Brent ..... You commented about people not being prepared for the storm. They really dont need to do that. That is why I described what it was like being strnaded by the 2009 KY ice storm. We did nothing in advance to be prepared, but we survived 9 days without any new provisions. No power. No land line phone. No cell phone. No county water. .... We already had all we needed. ..... Hope your kids do well in at the univeristy.

Good morning for the last time this month!
Bacon, eggs, and black coffee. Nothing better than that.
It thundered and rained through the night. We may be building an ark soon. The creek has already been flooded for a week.
Finally ready to make a sign for the N Scale motel. I bought some do-it-yourself decal paper. I printed an image of the sign and sprayed it with fixative. It has dried overnight, so I'm ready today to apply the decal to a piece of clear styrene. Then I will put in a small LED behind it. I hope to have a sign that has the letters light up looking like neon letters. I'll post a picture if I'm successful. I'm not sure where I will be posting from ... I guess either Spain or New Zealand.
Morning all, it is a bizzzzzeeee day here today. Spain sounds good along with a side trip to Portugal.
BNSF UP and others modeler Might I humbly suggest, as proposed earlier, Spain? I, for one would not object to the Diner visiting Spain, though I see that we would have to have three sets of trucks for the different gauges. As tour guide, I just hope you’re prepared to devote the time that goes into conducting a tour for a month.

BATMANI am watching the news on the hurricane and just shake my head. I can't believe people are so ill-prepared for such an event.

It is not so much that we are not prepared. 95% of the people in Florida have been through this before, some of us many times.
It is more a result of the "THE WORLD IS ENDING" reporting on the news. People are told that even though we have prepared, we still have not done enough, because all we hear is that this one is the "THE STORM TO END ALL STORMS!"
Remember when Irma hit Florida two years ago? The Weather Channel said that Florida woud be "Pounded back to the Stone Age". Then, we had very little damage, and you saw the same picture of the flooded trailer park in Naples over and over because that was all that happened.
They also liked to show the scene of water flowing down Biscayne Avenue in Miami because it looked good in TV. Not one word was said about how all those buildings can go under 20 feet of water and sustain ZERO damage. And... the designs all worked perfectly. The only damage was to some cars that remained on the lower level of the garages that are designed to flood until the dewatering pumps can turn on.
Don't believe everything you see on TV.
Yesterday all the retail outlets in Lee County sold out of bottled water, gas, fuel cans, and generators.
Overnight all new supplies arrived, and the stores are restocked this morning and ready for business. I'll bet you won't see that success story covered on television. Publix, Wal-Mart, Target, Lowes, and Home Depot are ready to supply everything we need. They have never let us down. The distribution networks these big retailers have are amazing and they never get the credit they deserve. They do more for us after storms than FEMA does.
We know what we are doing.
People getting flustered into a panic by irresponsible predictions from trusted sources is not an example of anyone not being prepared.

That's kind of what I was referring to about New Orleans. For years, the news proclaimed every hurricane "the big one". After years of overhyped warnings, when Katrina hit, there was a reason why many people didn't leave.
Also, the reporting that we are having more hurricanes and more intense hurricanes is just not true. What we ARE having is more reporting and more overhyped warnings than ever.
Good afternoon all.
Flo - A RBF please. Thanks.
Jimmy - Sorry about your cat. You have my condolences.
Ken - Congrats on the new rescue pup. Rescue dogs make the best dogs in my book. (I’ve had a couple, and currently have one.)
Kevin - Has the news about Dorian slowed now that his (her?) track is taking him a bit further north up the coast?
Brent - Glad to hear both kids are doing well.
Garry - Safe trip.
Lion - How do your little people handle having to use such big tools on repairs?
Sept. Diner - Either one sounds like a good (virtual) trip.
W*^k - The way this week has gone, I’m starting to think that I now w*^k with the same people Ken does!
Weather - Cool-ish, which is still nice. (78 Fairies High for Lion.) No rain today, but tomorrow might be different.
NWPA - Well, it’s the annual Cornfield 500 weekend, so lots of activity around. For those who are unaware, the Cornfield 500 is a big redneck style party weekend, put on by a family nearby, where they have big mud-trucks, live music, and a race (full of amateurs) in a dirt field turned racetrack. (Hence the name.) Sunday they will conclude with a big fireworks show that would rival almost any Independence Day show.
They also hold two world-record Monster-truck jumps at this event.
This year, the "headliners" if you will, are two big-name Mud Trucks, and their drivers.
Mud Trucks of Anderson’s by Richard Woodworth, on Flickr" alt="KingSling" width="640" height="480" />
First up, is King Sling. Some of you may have heard of this truck before.
Also included is Bog Hog, pictured below.
Mud Trucks of Anderson’s by Richard Woodworth, on Flickr" alt="Bog Hog" width="640" height="480" />
Some may have heard of this truck as well.
For those who haven’t, Bog Hog is driven by Weston Anderson. King Sling is the new truck driven by Dennis Anderson, of Grave Digger Monster Truck fame. (Weston is one of Dennis Anderson's son's.)
Both of these trucks have about 1550HP, and a 540 cubic inch block. King Sling runs a different type of injector than Bog Hog does, so they do run just slightly different then each other.
For the festivities this weekend, Weston has the pleasure of driving both trucks, as Dennis is healing from surgery. (But Dennis did come to do meet & greet, pictures, and sign autographs.)
Most people needed tickets for today for the meet and greet, but I just happen to know where the trucks were being displayed yesterday prior to being moved to the event, and when I was taking my pics of the displayed trucks, I happened to run into Dennis and Weston, and they were kind enough to not only do a meet & greet, and answer my questions on the trucks, but also did a photo with me in front of Weston's truck. I may post that pic later on.
Trains - Still no progress on the new layout to report, but I did manage to catch the newest loco for a local Short line, the WNY&P on a train yesterday, on what may have been her first trip on "home" rails.

Pretty spiffy looking unit for a short line used to older ALCO and MLW power! This unit, and her sisters to follow, will eventually bump the 6 axle ALCO and MLW power on the line that goes over Keating Summit.
She was a former CSX AC6000, that has been rebuilt to 4400HP, and is now wearing company Black & Yellow. (A few of the other units are red/black instead, but all repainted ones are this same style scheme of Black/yellow. Two of the 4 axle units have stayed in their original colors, one ex Belt RWY unit, still in her Belt paint, and one that is Orange/black. And two are ex M&E in Red.)
She was in a train with a ALCO C430 #431, a C424m #435, and two other Ex-CSX units not yet repainted, #,’s 6006 & 6007, that may be the two parts extras units. Here, I had grabbed a quick shot with my cell phone, as I was on my way to make a delivery for w*^k. (Otherwise, I would have chased and got better shots!)
Had I had time, it would have been a very easy chase, as they had to stop and flag a crossing the next block over, as the signals were not functioning at all for some reason. So, in this shot, they were crawling at a brisk walking pace. (Had I been prepared for that, I would have gotten a better shot.)
Wow, I have posted a lot of pictures today!
Guess I better quit before John (TF) calls me a "Post Hog", just to go along with my pic of Bog Hog.
Hope all are well, and all enjoy the day!

According to the National Weather Service, Cape Coral is no longer in the Cone Of Probability, but the news here is still saying that it will most likely turn back to the West, and we will again be in the target range.
Meanwhile, I was streaming the news from Charleston, South Carolina (WCBD), and they are now proudly pounding on the drums of doom.
I wish there was some constraint here. If it more than two days away, it is not time for dreadful alarm.

I read recently about the dilution of the superlative. It seems that every news cast includes terms such as “worst” or “historic.” As a result of over use, these terms no longer have their intended meaning. The risk is that this dilution will result in “The boy who called wolf” syndrome--when there truly is a event of historic magnitude, it will be ignored with catastrophic consequences.

That's AWESOME!

Heartland Division CB&QBrent ..... You commented about people not being prepared for the storm. They really dont need to do that.
Garry, one of my favourite questions to all the kids that were always at our house was, where would you get water if there was an earthquake and it stopped coming out of the tap? They were completely at a loss. The closest stream is about 3km away and often goes dry in the summer.
When I lived North of Vancouver in the mountains I did not store water as there was a major river, creeks and streams everywhere within a short walk of my house. People living in the city will be in real trouble if the water mains were cut.
We have a generator that has seen a lot of service over the years in extended power outages, some lasting days. I always have plenty of gas on hand, unlike hurricanes, earthquakes give no advance warning and we are way past due for a big one. They took core samples and in the past two thousand years this area has had a major earthquake every 278 years give or take 12 years, we are 328 years out at this point in time. Bring it on, I'm ready!
