My dad, who was a navigator/bomber with the RCAF during the war, brought home his service issue flight gloves. They would more properly be called gauntlets because they came half way up your arms. They were leather with a wool lining. He offered them to me when I was driving my MGB in the winter. The B's heater performance was less than spectacular. In fact, I think it had trouble keeping itself warm let alone the occupants of the car. The gloves were wonderful!

Dave

Top of the page! We frequent the local Wimpy's restaurant. Their food and service are excellent!! If you are hungry I particularly recommend the Wimpy's omelette. It is made with five eggs and covers the whole plate. There has to be a full cup of cheddar cheese, plus copious mushrooms, chopped tomatoes and peppers, and chopped bacon! It is served with home fries that are nice and crispy but not burned.DinnerYesThumbs UpWowYeah

I can only get through about half of one, but that's okay - I have breakfast for tomorrow too!

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Good morning.

Looks like we are in for a few rainy days here in the wilds of West KY.

Ken What you do with the coon is take it somewhere and release it at night when no one is looking.

My Father caught some and took them across the Ohio into IL and let them go.

(prob ended up in your attic Stick out tongue

TF those "high govenment planes" that leave a trail are most likely commecrail aircraft. The " trail" is conensation from the exhaust.  Not to say some are not AWACS radar planes. You can watch a flight tracker on the internet and they line up with your "high govt planes"

Anyway, not much else going on in the world of MLC. Got the yard mowed before the monsoons hit.

I never was an Omlette fan. Just give me eggs not with all that other stuff.

time to pretend like I am working.

Good Morning Everyone!

My second day in the US for the summer and I feel like I should be messed up from time change and jet lag, but I'm not!

Currently working on some summer homework for my AP Chemistry class next year! It is work! I have to calculate the wavelenght and frequencies and energy of various waves and it's killing me!

After this though I've got some of my HO scale trains out of storage and am thinking of doing some work on them. Currently staying 2 min walk from my LHS so I'll have to get over there in the next few days!

Have a great morning everyone!

Regards, Isaac

Good morning ....

Honoring veterans on D-Day 75th Anniversary.

Flyovers of fighters jets...... Terry metioned F-15's he saw, and others have chimed in on that topic. ... I mentioned several days ago, part of the Golden Spike celebration in Utah included a flyover of 4 fighters in formation. Impressive ! ...

I took this photo a few years ago on a boat in Lake St. Claire, Michigan as we watched a performance of the Blue Angels at Selfridge Air base   .

..

Racoons and other critters..... I agree with TF that feeding bread crumbs to critters is a very bad idea. .....

Ed .... We don't kill trapped critters. We take them across the bridge and release them in the Land Between the Lakes.

JR .... I am not familiar with round bright boys, and I will be intersted in what you say about them.

John (York) ..... Thanks for commenting on my photos.

Dave ..... Regarding your back pains. Prayers for you. Hopefully doctors will correct it. .... I can relate to back pain. As I have said sometimes before, a drunl driver seriously injured my back a number of years ago. Back surgery repaired broken vertebrae, but my back still bothers me at times.

..

Ray !!! ... I'm happy to hear about the lunch date you are planning. ... Any of us Diners will gladly attest to your good qualities. You are a very good man !

MLC ..... A photo for you.

..

Montana...... Here is a photo of the North Coast Limited in northwestern Illinois on its way to Montana. The Burlington RR hauled it daily from Chicago to St Paul.

Here is the Empire Builder from Montana (and farther west ) headed towards Chicago on the Burlington. .... Note: CB&Q E-units hauled the EB and the NCL between Chicago and St Paul.

Hey Zoe.  Just a glass of juice today.  Busy one ahead.

On the topic of jets... I remember I was at the Niagara Falls ANG base for their airshow one year when I was younger.  Me, Mom and my sibs.  An F-14 came zorching by at 50 feet off the deck, wings back, zone 5 (full afterburner) and drops a sonic boom that shook the ground under you.  Righteous.

But I still prefer the pounding bass and banshee wail of the Packard-Merlin V-1650 in the P-51.  Wink

Hi Garry,

Thanks for your thoughts. It would be life changing for me if the doctors were able to eliminate the pain! I do have to admit that I am part of the problem. I need to lose about 50 lbs. All that excess weight is not helping.

Today I am grateful for the influence of my children, specifically my middle daughter. As I have mentioned before, at 30-something she joined the National Guard as a PFC (she had her associates degree). Not only did she drive her first Humvee this week, but she was promoted to Specialist five months before the normal eligibility date. Last year, while she was struggling in basic training to get her PT scores up to where they needed to be, I started to support her from afar with my own regimine of pushups and sit-ups. This morning, as I do three times a week, I did three sets of 20 pushups and three sets of 30 sit-ups. I tell people that my stomach is now a firm mattress with a pillow-top cover.

I wondered why raccoons were allowed to be killed, but not moved.

Nebraska's wildlife site says there are several reasons, and they apply to almost all wildlife, not just raccoons.

1.  There is worry that moving an animal can also move diseases and spread things like rabies to different areas.

2.  Most animals are territorial, and newly introduced animals will usually either starve to death or will be painfully killed by the animals in that area.

The site does not suggest humane ways to kill the raccoon.

For that, we must look to Arthurian Legend according to John Cleese.  I would refer you to the Book of Armaments, Chapter 2, verses 9-21...

I knew that holy hand grenades worked on killer rabbits, but I wasn't sure if they worked on raccoons.

Adam,

That sound was caused by air passing through the oil cooler, the F4-U had the same sound. The P-38 Lightning had turbo-chargers for the engines for high altitude performance, and in a power dive, with the turbochargers cut in, made an ungodly wail. The week following V-J Day, Dad took us to the flightline where there were 12 P-38s. When they came back across the field full bore, it was a sound never to be forgotten.

I don't think I've heard a P-38.  Charles Lindberg, who made some controversial political comments before the war, that would have put him in moderation in the forum, went to the Pacific theater as an observer and did some unauthorized combat missions.

He figured out how to adjust fuel mix to substantially increase their range.

 Eveing Diners

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer and leave a stein outside for Ulrich.

I slauted all that where there on D-Day and those that will never come home. Crying Today on the news I saw footage of 3 Paratroopers that where in there 90's that made the drop on D-Day make a jump today on to Normandy Beach. Airborn All The Way!

Funny that was on the news today. Few days ago I started thinking about my last jump at age 63. Sport jumping cost around $200.00 per jump. With never making a sport jump, it would be tandem jump I guess?

Ed Thank you for letting me bend your ear tonight!

Later, 18th Airborn None Smoking Ken again.

No worries, Ken. Always nice to chat. I hope you get good footing back under that Hippo. I forgot to ask, did you find all the calendar photos I stuffed in the box? There were some at the bottom of the box, too.

Still rather chilly around here but presumably warmer days are just ahead.

My best to all —

Morning all!  Well, I survived a rather intense audit at work this week to an ultimately very good outcome.  Glad that's over!

Flo, I could really use a LARGE coffee and some blueberry french toast casserole.

Thanks for that.  I actually thought the whine was either a doppler artifact as the plane approached, or that it had something to do with airflow through the prop as it dove.  I never thought of the ramscoop.  I knew about the Corsair's (that's why the Japanese called it "Whistling Death"), but I never made the connection before.

Henry -  I got to hear/see Glacier Girl, the P-38 they dug out of the ice in Greenland a while back.  Sweet sounding lady, and a phenomenal aircraft overall.  Gotta say, the F-35 Lightning II has a long way to go to live up to her heritage.

Brent - That is a sweet loco.  I'm a little jealous.  Big Smile

Good morning, everyone.  It's about 70° with high humidity this morning.  The creek is down and the trail is open so it was a nice walk this morning.  The birds were very loud this morning.

I have to go out in a little bit to cut grass again -- for the third time this week.  With all the rain and temperatures in the 90s, the grass grows like crazy.

Garry, I know that everything like model railroads, cutting grass, and small talk all fall by the wayside when one faces health issues.  I'll pray that everything goes well in your surgery and recovery.  It's tough to face, but hopefully by this time next week, you'll be well on the road to recovery.

Head out before they're gone.
